“We would be delighted to come back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2009

Ramon's is ultra clean, extremely friendly staff, fantastic beach, lovely dining room, and centrally located. We would suggest that you bring your own decaf tea bags and decaf bags for the dining room. Hopefully they will have WiFi when you arrive. They were just installing it when we left. No TV, nor small fridges or microwaves in the rooms except for the ultra expensive ones. They really make a wonderful attempt to keep the beach raked, the boardwalk swept, and anything else they can do to make the area lovely...and they succeed!
You will not be disappointed by choosing Ramon's!

Here's my somewhat random stream of consciousness about Ramons and Ambergris Caye. Apologies for the wall of text. Hope it helps you!

The Ramon's resort:
Rooms
We very much enjoyed the small palapa style structures, and hugely prefer them over the large, monolithic style buildings at other resorts. Great rooms (beachfront, we did not see any of the others), quaint, charming, nice porch overlooking the beach, very comfortable furniture. The breeze in the beachfront rooms seems to help with the mosquitoes. Beautiful painted high walls in the rooms with vaulted ceilings. No TVs in any rooms, which we definitely appreciated. There were hardly any guests! The guy at the front desk said out of 70-something rooms, only 4 were occupied! Ouch. We felt really bad for them. The restaurant staff seemed thrilled to have us walk by, and they appeared to hope we would be eating there so they would have something to do. Very close to town, you don't have to travel very far to get to most things. Nice view from the oceanfront rooms, though they planted palm trees in areas that partially obstruct that nice view.

Staff
Pretty much everybody from the driver, the pool guy, the bartenders, the daytime security guys, maids, etc, were very friendly and helpful.

Food
The water is safe to drink, the food is safe to eat. Nobody got sick the whole time, which is kinda rare for us (I get food poisoning very easily). All the restaurant guys took great care of us. The food was quite tasty (though expensive). The presentation of several of our meals there were worthy of taking a photo! Beautiful dining area.

Other
Nice gift shop. Awesome dock. Cute little lizards running all over the place. Great snorkeling off the end of the dock! They have a mini artificial reef set up there, absolutely teeming with fish in and around it. Nice pool (smaller and more shallow than it looks in the photos!), and just refurbished. Comfortable pool furniture. Shaded hammocks on the beach. Best beach on the island (sea grass and debris raked twice daily). The inland portion of the grounds are a lush, manicured jungle, very well kept, gorgeous!

Negatives
The resort and the restaurant are expensive. The air conditioning in one of our rooms was very underpowered, but the other room was great. They seemed unable to fix the underpowered one. They have a creepy night watchman. I'm pretty sure he is a zombie, though with a bit less charm. He won't cause you any problems, though. He mostly lurks in the shadows and avoids contact with people.
I can see why people might complain about city noise in some of the rooms near the road. It wasn't really bad, but you could hear it. It wasn't a problem at all in the beachfront rooms.

Ramon's dive operation:
Here's where a lot of my criticism comes. Most of dive crew, especially the manager, were very unhelpful, and definitely less than friendly. Exceptions were Andy (boat captain), Gil (instructor), and one of the divemasters. Andy and Gil were wonderful! The rest of them have absolutely no idea how to treat customers. They were standoffish, and clearly would prefer that we were not around to bother them. We don't require a lot of attention to be happy, but this was ridiculous.

Here's an example (one of many). We showed up one day for a dive, made eye contact with the manager, waved to the staff that were all sitting around doing nothing, and walked down the dock to the boat. The boat captain there said we weren't on his boat that day. (Huh?) He said we were going with someone else, but he didn't know any details. We saw a different dive operation boat at the end of the dock waving in our direction. We couldn't imagine they would be waving at us, so we went back and spoke to the manager. He begrudgingly said we were booked with someone else that day, with no explanation. The other dive operation was still waving at us, so we hurried over to them. We actually had a great time with them! (they are called Amigos Del Mar) When we got back to the dock later that day, and tried to find out what happened, we were informed that 2 divers were the minimum number to go out on a Ramon's boat. Uhhhh, I'm 1, my wife makes 2. What's the problem? No explanation, no apology, no information whatsoever. Terrible customer service! One person we dove with said she worked hard to ingratiate herself with the staff on previous trips there, and after that they finally opened up to her. We also noticed that divers from other resorts came to Ramon's to dive. Though its possible their own resort did not have a dive operation. Not sure.
We also had problems with their tanks. They had us equip our own BCs and regs, and more than half the tanks were low (1000-2200lbs). Some were missing o-rings. We heard that the Ramon's air pump filters needed to be replaced, and the upper management were unwilling to buy new filters. So they paid another dive operation for the air. Anyway, having to try 2-3 tanks to find a good one was annoying as well. Another thing we didn't like is they are overly safety conscious. When they had 2 boats going out, we asked to be put with the advanced group so we can get some longer bottom time. They have no concept of that; they assign people to boats randomly. Each dive, the divemaster would check on our air far too often, make sure everybody was OK about every 10 minutes (constantly banging on his tank), and bring everybody up when the first newbie runs out of air. It wasn't THAT big of a deal, but it did diminish the experience.
The positive news is they have a few good people working there, nice 8 passenger boats (no cattle boats here! SWEET!), a great dock, gear lockers, and good facilities. Customer service is crucial for a dive operation, and these guys are simply awful. Out of 5 stars, I'd give the dive operation a 1.

San Pedro (unrelated to Ramon's):
Though people writing reviews here say you can get by without a golf cart, I would definitely recommend it. We did the first half of the trip without one, decided to try it for a day, and liked it so much that we kept it the rest of the trip! The food at almost every restaurant ranged from very good to excellent. Only got one mediocre meal the entire time! The people were friendly. The only people that got to be a bit annoying were the wood carvers, who are very persistent about selling their wares.
Some of the guys traveling up and down the beach selling carvings were annoying. Several were obviously stoned. One tried to sell me drugs, begged for money, and followed us around. Another tried to sell me wood carvings easily 50 times during our 10 day stay! He would occasionally approach me twice within about 5 minutes, apparently forgetting that he had just approached me! I actually got angry with this guy. I was delighted that Ramon's security chases these guys away when they leave the public portion of the beach and hassle the Ramon's guests. We also got stopped on our golf cart by a woman begging for money, said she's a mom of 3 kids and needs some help. Sigh.

There are mosquitoes. Bring bug spray.
Sunset Grill has tarpon feeding, which was one of the highlights of the trip! There were a bunch (25?) of tarpon, maybe 4-5 feet long, cruising just under the surface. The waiter will give you some sardines to hold just over the surface, and the tarpon will jump up and take it from your hand. WOW! FUN!
If you need them, grocery stores are abundant, though prices vary widely.

Miscellaneous
The oranges in Belize are green! (shouldn't they be called greens? ;-)
None of the chefs in any restaurant there has any concept of how to bake tasty bread. Hahahaha! Belizeian bread is as tasteless as air.

Overall
Ramon's is great, we would definitely go back! The diving off Ambergris Caye is wonderful, San Pedro is an OK place to be, the food is great, and you'll enjoy your stay. The only thing I might change is diving with Ramon's dive shop, for the reasons I explained above.

We stayed at Ramon's Village for my sister's wedding. We had a large group of about 46 people. We were not without some kinks. One of the couple's in our party was without A/C for most of the week and they were doing some renovations to some rooms on our side of the resort during most of the stay. However, the service and friendliness of the staff more than made up for it. The food in the restaurant was awesome! We had breakfast there everyday and ate dinner there 3 nights. The tthatched roofs on the cabins were totally cool.
They did a fantastic job with the wedding details.

Excellent service with friendly and helpful staff that go out of their way to be accomodating. My husband and I travelled to San Pedro with several other family members and friends to attend a wedding. Almost everyone was upgraded to better rooms if they were available...for free! Rooms are outdated but kept clean. AC wall units loud but worked great. Rooms right on beach and a few steps to the water. Beach is beautiful, well maintained, with great lounge chairs and hammocks. The pool is small and had murkey water. The location is right in the middle of town and with in walking distance to restraunts, shopping, etc. Restaurant food just OK but very coveinent to access from rooms and beach. Most liked: beautiful beach with great location/views. Least liked: pool and out of date fixtures/decor in rooms.

My husband and I went for our anniversary and we were treated well with a welcoming bottle champagne, dinner credits, snorkeling, and bikes for the day. The restaurant has great food, the grounds are kept very clean, the private dock has a nice swimming area, the rooms are private, and it has friendly staff. We were able to meet the owners while we were there and they couldn't be nicer people!!!

Ramon's Village had it all... quiet a cosy rooms and a little bit of nightlife as well. The staff was wonderful. We had breakfast included in our package and we never had a bad meal. We went fishing a couple times and brought back fresh fish which they also cooked up for us for lunch for a small fee. We used their fishing guide recommendations and they even worked with us on price since we went more than once.

We loved Ramon's and recommended it to our friends who will be staying there this November. We'll definitely be back!
