We were at Ramon's on Ambergris Caye from Feb. 16-23, 2008. We are 53 years old.
Terrific location, nice beach. Lots of life along this strip.
We enjoyed being able to walk into town and there was no need to drive a motor vehicle the whole week we were there. Ramon's was acceptable for us, but it is obvious that your experience depends on which unit you are in.
There is no TV and you have to pay $5 per day if you want a small refrigerator.
Friends of ours told us that she would hear the toilet gurgle frequently, keeping her awake, and as soon as anyone in the unit was up and around in the morning, she could no longer sleep because she would hear them moving about. She also said the shower water would change from very hot to cold. There was often a stiff breeze off the water, and those in the units closer to the ocean would hear a sound all night some nights like someone brooming off the outside of the walls from the thatched roof blowing. A man told us he would wake up sweating every night, and the A/C was dripping condensation into the room. It blew right at the bed. Our A/C did not blow on the bed. We had no thatched roof sounds. Our temperature was fine, and the bed was just right, not too hard or soft. We were in a single unit, so had no noise from neighbors.
Our unit was back away from the beach, which means closer to the road, and there was a lot of traffic noise until about 10:00 p.m. We read until 10:30 pm or so, and then had no trouble falling asleep. If you go to sleep earlier, the traffic noise might interfere. Our first night there, we were exhausted from travel, so went to bed about 9:00, and the traffic noise made it hard for me to fall asleep that night. I suggest taking a white noise machine.
I had no bug bites the whole week, and I used no bug repellant at all. A worker at Ramon's told us mosquitos are never a problem there, even in the rainy season (June through Nov.)
We avoided Ramon's restaurant after our one meal there, which was conch fritters. With two lemonades, that "lunch" was $40 U.S., way overpriced and not good.
The Blue Water Grill is right next door, we ate there a lot. Other good restaurants: Caramba, Mango's, and Elvi's. Be sure not to miss the Ice Cream at Dandee's, near Caramba restaurant. There is a great little French bakery just at the northwest corner of the airport, across the street.
Although there is great stuff to see underwater there, very few people snorkel around the beach or piers; I saw only two the whole week. There is boat traffic there; it is not reserved for snorkelers, so there is an element of danger. You can pay for a snorkel or scuba trip at half a dozen different dive shops. Outside the reef, the waves really roll, and getting back into the boat from a scuba dive was a bit of a challenge. Two of the days we were there, no scuba dive trips went out, because the wind had picked up and the waves were too high. Snorkel trips go inside the reef, so they weren't affected. The water inside the reef is about 28 feet deep.
The reason the pool at Ramon's isn't used much is because the board walk all around it is a walkway, so there is no place to leave lounge chairs around the pool. The Sunbreeze pool had people in the loungers all day, it has a nice deck. At Ramon's the lounge chairs are on the beach, not at the pool.
Golf cart rental is about $40 for 8 hours, if I remember right.
We LOVE Ambergris Caye and want to go back soon. We plan to stay near Ramon's but not at Ramon's the next time. The Palms, for example, is right next door, and is more expensive than Ramon's, but has much nicer and larger rooms. Sunbreeze is also a good alternative.
Bottom line: if you or your spouse demand upscale, Ramon's is not for you. If you want an out-of-the-ordinary experience and don't demand perfection, give it a try.
