I stayed here with my husband for four days and it was spectacular. We were trying to decide between Victoria House and Matachica but decided to stay at Matachica because the room we wanted to stay at Victoria House was unavailable. When we arrived at Matachica, we were happy to have made the right choice. The pictures on-line does not do justice for this place!
My husband and I stayed at the Craberry Room and it was well-ventilated and clean. We got fresh drinking water everyday and the housekeeping did an excellent job with the rooms. The food at Mambo is delicious but I agree with some past reviewers that it can get expensive. We usually ate lunch in San Pedro and then ate dinner at Mambo or the near by restaurant owned by Azure. If you eat at Mambo, any of the grouper dishes are delicious!
In terms of the snorkeling, diving and other adventure trips, the price does not differ so much if you go back to San Pedro and book a tour through a seperate operater. ( snorkeling trips ( outside of Matachica) usually cost $45US and the ferry to San Pedro is $15. The same snorkeling trip at Matachica costs $60 so it's the same price without the hassle of going back into San Pedro) Unless you are planning to ONLY stay at Matachica during your visit, I would recommend doing altun-ha and other trips on the mainland when you are in Belize City.
If all you want to do is lounge, go swimming and relax, Matachica is your place. The staff are extremely helpful and are friendly. The woman who books the room, Burga is super helpful also. My husband and I are planning another get-away to Matchica soon!
