I stayed here with my husband for four days and it was spectacular. We were trying to decide between Victoria House and Matachica but decided to stay at Matachica because the room we wanted to stay at Victoria House was unavailable. When we arrived at Matachica, we were happy to have made the right choice. The pictures on-line does not do justice for this place!

My husband and I stayed at the Craberry Room and it was well-ventilated and clean. We got fresh drinking water everyday and the housekeeping did an excellent job with the rooms. The food at Mambo is delicious but I agree with some past reviewers that it can get expensive. We usually ate lunch in San Pedro and then ate dinner at Mambo or the near by restaurant owned by Azure. If you eat at Mambo, any of the grouper dishes are delicious!

In terms of the snorkeling, diving and other adventure trips, the price does not differ so much if you go back to San Pedro and book a tour through a seperate operater. ( snorkeling trips ( outside of Matachica) usually cost $45US and the ferry to San Pedro is $15. The same snorkeling trip at Matachica costs $60 so it's the same price without the hassle of going back into San Pedro) Unless you are planning to ONLY stay at Matachica during your visit, I would recommend doing altun-ha and other trips on the mainland when you are in Belize City.

If all you want to do is lounge, go swimming and relax, Matachica is your place. The staff are extremely helpful and are friendly. The woman who books the room, Burga is super helpful also. My husband and I are planning another get-away to Matchica soon!

Stayed here with my boyfriend for three nights and was glad when the stay was over. Our hut was next to the main building, we just constantly heard music and the wind going through the hut. I'm normally not a light sleeper, but that kept me awake. The hut was expensive, but lacked any kind of wow factor for me. Bed was nice and comfortable.

The whole island is artificial, probably was beautiful back in the day when Madonna went in the 80s but now it's ruined. It's tacky, filled with condos and hotels. Worst of all, the beach is a thin layer of sand on top of *concrete*! I could not believe it when I kicked the sand a bit and stubbed my toe..

Food is nice, but extremely expensive for Belize. Desserts pricier than in a nice restaurant in London.

I was expecting paradise, but this little resort squeezed between two others (and many more 100m down the beach) failed at that.

Went to Matachica on our honeymoon- it was absolutely perfect! We wanted a place where we could truly relax but also had options if we felt like doing something. Matachica has the perfect balance of that. From the moment you arrive you feel at ease (the welcome cocktail might contribute to that). The staff was extremely friendly, helpful and attentive. We went with the honeymoon package and really enjoyed it. Our beachfront casita was very comfortable and it was lovely falling asleep to the sound of the wind and sea every night. We loved Mambo and can honestly say every meal was fantastic. Don't miss the ceviche- it's divine!
The Altun-Ha tour with Searious- highly recommend it if you want a taste of local Belize culture. Driving through the villages on the mainland was very interesting and our guide were wonderful. They were from one of the villages and really knew the area and its history well. Try the cashew wine!
Snorkeling with Charlie on Matachica's boat was amazing. Holchan and Shark Ray Alley are definite spots to check out.
Overall our stay was exactly what we wanted and we highly recommend Matachica for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. Matachica is a hidden gem- while it is slightly rustic it is so charming and relaxing too.

Can't wait to return!

My husband and I have been to the Caribbean a bunch of times, but for the money, Matachica was the best resort we've been to. It is the perfect size--small enough that we got great service and the staff remembered our names. (And there was never the need to wake up early to "reserve" a beach chair, like at too many large resorts.) But Matachica is large enough to offer nice amenities, like a spa and a terrific restaurant. (Don't miss the fresh snapper on skewers at lunch and the Matachica omelet at breakfast!)

Burga, one of the managers, is an incredible resource--she helped plan our entire trip, and her tips were excellent. (We ended up doing the jungle/beach package, spending half our trip at Chan Chich Lodge, and loved both places. We did add an extra night, since 6 is not enough!) We couldn't thank her enough. All the staff was so friendly and so efficient.

This resort is so much nicer than most of the other beachfront resorts we saw on Ambergris Caye--you won't be sorry if you stay here. And make sure to go on the snorkeling trip to the nature reserve--snorkeling with nurse sharks and sea turtles is an experience you don't often get.

We stayed, by the way, in a new SeaBreeze Suite (Pomegranate) and loved it--it was spacious with a great bathroom.

My wife and I stayed at Matachica in April for our honeymoon. We had an incredible trip and highly recommend Matachica!

Transportation to and from the resort was very easy. The staff made the quick trip from the airport to the resort a pleasure.

The staff were fantastic! Everyone was very friendly and always attentive. Service for the rooms, beach, snorkeling, etc. was excellent. The resort and beach were always clean. They made us feel like family.

The food at Mambo was delicious. Literally every meal we had was great. Service, portions, and presentation were all top-notch. They have a good variety of dishes and the desserts are fantastic. They had a good wine list as well. Meals were not cheap, but Mambo is a gourmet restaurant in every respect and well worth the price.
The Rojo Lounge next door was convenient for grabbing something different for lunch/dinner as well as bottled water, salsa, etc. (I was addicted to their grouper tacos.)

We stayed in a Beachfront Casita, which I highly recommend. The room was spacious and comfortable as well as very romantic. The weather was windy for most of our stay and there was some noise from the thatched roof that might bother very light sleepers but we had no complaints. Having a hammock on the front porch and a view of the beach and ocean from your room is a great way to live. The beach had plenty of chairs and umbrellas and the sand was constantly groomed.

We purchased the Honeymoon Package, which worked well for us because we had breakfast and dinner at Mambo most days. Those of you who plan to spend your nights in San Pedro should probably skip the package. Lunch is not included in the package so there are no worries about wasting your meal while you’re wandering the island during the day.
Included in the Honeymoon Package was a trip to Altun Han (Maya ruins), snorkeling at Shark Ray Alley and the Marine Reserve, and massages in the spa. All were great, except we felt rushed through the Mayan Ruins. This was not Matachica’s fault, but I would probably find a tour that concentrated on the ruins and didn’t make other stops for restaurants, spas, etc.

In short… we LOVED Ambergris Caye and Matachica. It is a perfect spot for quiet, romantic trips while giving you the option option of a short boat ride into town for some shops/nightlife/etc. Any of the negatives were minor and were far outweighed by the fantastic service and overall excellence of Matachica. We can’t wait to go back!
