“New Carribean Chic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2008

Mata Chica is an oasis of relaxation. From the cozy hammock on our porch, to the exotic garden bathroom, you couldn't help but relax in the island air. The service was attentive and caring from the cold drink waiting upon arrival to ensuring our timely departure in San Pedro. An island retreat, the rooms were tastefully decorated with flavors of Belize; and the food had a flare of artistic Carribean flavors felt from the rest of the island. Mata Chica brings together the cultures of the Caribbean and the Mayan country side; and with it a sense of adventure and new beginnings.

This was the perfect place for a honeymoon. Between the private beach-front casitas, the delicious menu and pool/beachside bar, and the available activities, we spent half of our time relaxing and the other half sea kayaking, snorkeling and touring the ruins. There were a lot of other activities to choose from (cave tubing, ziplining, fishing and more) but we just enjoyed the option of not having to do anything other than eat, drink and enjoy ourselves and the beautiful surroundings. It was a great balance, and every little detail seemed to have been thought out to increase our enjoyment. And the staff is great - Ish is the man! If you're looking for a romantic getaway for two, this is the place.

You get the feeling within moments of arriving at Matachica that you’ve made the right choice. The rum punch helps of course, but overwhelmingly it’s that feeling you get when you arrive at a resort and you just know that you are in for a week of total relaxation, pampering, and escapist activity that’s going to go way too quickly. You can tell by looking at the people who are just a day in.

The beautifully appointed thatched casitas and main house are all set back just a few white sandy steps from the ocean making shoes unnecessary. It’s just one of the many things about Matachica that make you feel very far away from everything you are taking a vacation from. Snorkeling off the barrier reef, kayaking, fishing, a trip into the jungle to explore the Lamanai Mayan ruins, and Luisa the masseuse, also helped.

We celebrated our birthdays at Matachica and the friendly and professional staff prepared a beautiful dinner on the beach of grilled fish that we had caught that day. There was a bonfire, dancing, and a Belican-shaped piñata brought in from town especially for the occasion. We couldn’t have asked for more.

Matachica is a small resort that offers guests all the options of a bigger resort but without the noise, crowds, and feeling of living in an artificial paradise-compound. There is a delicious restaurant, full service spa, and a media room with an extensive DVD collection, new computers and wireless-internet access. In the end, our five days did go by too quickly but we left feeling like we had been away for ten. The only thing that moves at a quicker pace in Belize is the time it takes you to completely disconnect.

I thought that Matachica was a nice place to stay and the whole northern end of Ambergris Caye is very pretty although also very built up. My husband and I stayed for four nights and the food was decent and the rooms were clean and comfortable. We did feel that the staff was a little bit lacking in customer care skills, however, and we found that booking tours was difficult. After we left Matachica, we booked into Thatch Caye Resort in southern Belize and we were truly stunned by how much friendlier the staff there was. The rooms were also more spacious, the surroundings more natural, the wood carvings excellent, and the whole staff was extremely attentive to our every need. And the price was significantly cheaper!!!

I hate to keep repeating the last few reviews here, but really feel strongly about the experience I had at Matachica and had to write.

What a lovely, special place. After a VERY long trip from San Francisco to El Salvador to Belize City to San Pedro and a golf cart and a boat, I really wondered along the way if it would be worth it. Much to my pleasure, it absolutely was.

We stayed in one of the two bedroom suites and had lots of room. Comfortably decorated, we appreciated the lovely linens, the air conditioning, and the hammock on the deck.

We enjoyed eating at Mambo and found the food to be of very good quality and the prices not out of line with any good resort food. We did get a little tired of the same menu after a few days and ventured into town, to Portofino, and to Rojo Lounge for a few meals. While we really loved the variety and creativity at Rojo Lounge (try the habanero hummus), we found the food at Mambo to be far superior to Portofino.

The staff is so friendly and warm and really go out of their way to be of service. I believe they take great pride in this resort and it shows. We hugged a few of the employees we met upon leaving because they were so wonderful during our trip and I have to say that is the first time I've ever done that while on vacation - certainly never felt the need to do that at the Four Seasons.

We timed our trips into town around the resort boat's departure times, which may impede your plans a little, but was not a big deal to us. After spending some time in town, we agreed that we made the right decision giving ourselves a little space and staying up north at Matachica.

We would definitely recommend Matachica to friends. It is casual and friendly, while at the same time maintaining a level of sophistication. We enjoyed our stay immensely and can't wait to go back!

We just got back from a 5 night 6 day stay at the Matachica Beach Resort and wow!!! what a place. We have traveled around the world and found Ambergris Caye and Matachica Resort everything that we had hoped for. Everything was fantastic from the moment we landed in San Pedro. While waiting for our luggage to be unloaded from the Tropic Air flight we walked across the street to a nice air conditioned bar for our first Belikin (Beer of Belize) moment.
After arriving in San Pedro, Chris and his team from Matachica came and greeted us at the airport and transported us via boat to the resort. Upon our arrival at the resort, we received our frozen drinks and checked into our beautiful "Banana" Sea Breeze Casita.
Our casita was roomy and well kept. Each afternoon we found fresh flowers on our towels and fresh water to drink.
The resort was very well taken care of, the beach was constantly being raked to remove the sea grass. This was definitely the best beach on the island and its swimmer friendly. The staff was friendly and we really enjoyed the hospitality of Reuban and Oswald who enlightened us with bar games and jokes during each evenings happy hour. These guys were AWESOME!!! Great Pina Colada's.
The food at Mambo was delicious, we highly recommend the grouper, snapper, chocolate souffle and for breakfast the omelette's and chocolate banana pancakes were outstanding. We also loved the fresh fruit. We also ate one night at the Rojo Lounge which was also outstanding. The food is served Tapa's style, 2 to 3 plates are enough for two people.
During our stay we snorkeled Mexico Rocks (great trip saw a turtle and stingrays), Hol Chan Marine Preserve and Shark Ray Alley (great experience, with outstanding underwater visibility and lots of brightly colored fish, sharks (nurse) and rays). We also did a 1/2 day reef fishing trip booked through the resort. This was a fun trip which culminated in us catching some tasty snapper that the resort's kitchen staff gladly prepared for us for lunch in a tasty and absolute wonderful platter of snapper and rice. (I have never ate so much fish before in my life in 1 setting, the fish was to die for!!!)
We ventured into San Pedro a couple of times. There is a cool wine shop and don't forget to stop at Elvi's Kitchen for some tasty local food. We highly recommend the red beans and rice and the blueberry cheesecake.
Overall, Matachica was an awesome place to sit back relax and enjoy paradise. The staff, food, and location was fantastic. Although the resort is 5 miles north of San Pedro we found it very easy to travel back and forth to town and the airport as the resort had boats going to and from regularly throughout the day.

We enjoyed our stay so much that we are already planning a trip back next year around the same time.

We just returned from an 8 day stay at Mata Chica (5/5 - 5/13/08) and couldn't be more pleased. We were married on May 11th and brought 18 guests with us. From start to finish, everything about Mata Chica was stunning.

For planning before we went, Burga was an absolute joy to work with. She was incredibly helpful and responsive as we made arrangements for the day of the wedding and other logistics to room 20 people.

Everything went flawless the day of, and Burga's dedication was a big part of this. Once we arrived, as others have said, we were greeted by incredibly helpful and friendly staff. From the moment we got off the Tropic Air flight, the Mata Chica staff were there. We were taken from the airport to their boat, the "Mambo" and then made the 5 mile trip north to the resort where we were met with our pre-ordered drinks.

Mata Chica is a small, intimate setting that's immaculately cared for. It is "rustic" but not in an uncomfortable way. I should note that we are completely laid back and do not expect (nor want) luxury on our vacations. Mata Chica was the perfect balance of incredible service and cozy accommodations, without being overly pretentious or glitzy. If you're used to the Four Seasons, Mata Chica may be a bit too in touch with nature for you. There are fun crabs on the beach that incessantly dig their holes, iguanas sunning themselves in resort palm trees or on the sand, and friendly island dogs (most seemed to have owners). Mosquitoes were a non-issue as long as you were in the breeze (if you're back a bit and out of the breeze, you will want to use bug spray at night).

Some of our guests stayed 8 days, others were there for 6. We took over most of the resort, and were in 3 of the 4 Casitas as well as several bungalows, suites, and 1 villa. The rooms are beautiful. We stayed in the Watermelon Casita, which was furthest from the main bar/restaurant area and nicely secluded. Even our guests who stayed in Mango, which was right next to the bar, did not have any issues with noise or people disturbing them. The tradewinds were strong, keeping the rooms nice and cool. We never ran the A/C even though it was quite warm.

The entire resort is well kept, clean, and really just beautiful. You are steps from the sea, the dock is a fabulous place to relax, and you cannot beat the hammocks on each porch. I spent each morning lying in my hammock watching the sun rise beyond the dock and reading.

For activities, the staff does a great job arranging outings either via outside companies or using their own boat. We did not have any organized group activities except for Saturday night, where we rented a catamaran for a sunset cruise (which was fabulous). Members of our group went to Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley, as well as deep sea and reef fishing. We also went to the Manatee sanctuary, which was rather uneventful. Snorkeling off Caye Caulker (as part of that trip) was fabulous. You also can take the free kayaks and head out to the reef from the resort, which is about a 15-20 minute paddle (depending on the winds). The snorkeling out there is great most days (earlier in the morning is better). We saw loads of fish, nurse sharks, spotted eagle rays, sting rays, and some beautiful coral. I think I went out to the reef 6 of the 8 days I was there.

As for the wedding, I highly recommend Mata Chica as your setting. We were married at the end of the pier which the resort tastefully decorated. The service was quick (which we liked) and went off without a hitch. Burga was present the whole time to make sure things went smoothly. I had zero BS to deal with, and it was probably the least stressful wedding you could imagine. There is no need to be a "bridezilla" when you get married at Mata Chica - they take great care of you. In terms of costs, we covered our guests room costs. For what we could have spent for a 1 day wedding in Chicago, we had a multi-day vacation for 20 people.

The restaurant is phenomenal, and rivals the best restaurants in Chicago. The continental breakfast included with our stay was massive. The seafood was delicious and always fresh. When people caught fish on the reef and deep sea fishing trips, the staff prepared them for our dinners. The menu prices are higher, but you are getting gourmet quality food. We knew this going in so there were no surprises. Most of the restaurants at the north end of the island are comparable in price. If you want to go to town to eat, catch the resort boat versus using the water taxi to save some money. I only went to town once while I was there. A couple of our guests went up to Portofino for dinner, which was about a 20 minute walk.

I don't remember everyone's names at the resort, but would like to mention a few people who were fantastic. Oswald the bartender always kept us happy, Ali and Ishmael were great in keeping us fed, and all of the desk staff were incredibly helpful. All of the staff was helpful, and would find ways to meet any request we had. They learned our names (I was never referred to by my room name nor heard that for any of my guests).

I have nothing but thanks for the Mata Chica staff for making our wedding truly memorable. We hope to return soon, perhaps for an anniversary celebration. We highly recommend this place, and I think it's safe for me to speak for our 18 other guests that they would do the same.
