My husband and I decided to get married at VH after it was highly recommended as having the most beautiful beach on San Pedro. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking and the landscaping etc is perfect for any wedding. We booked a plantation room over a year ago and also arranged to have our wedding on the beach. Both of our parents were present for the wedding and they too (due to resort rules) stayed at there.
I was disappointed upon arrival at the resort that the room they had us staying in has absolutely no view and was in the older more outdated portion of the resort. It was small and all we could see from our balcony (which we had been told would have a beach view) was the tops of coconut trees. I was very upset since we had payed so far in advance and had our wedding there that they could not have chosen a better room for us. My mother-in-law had booked the same type of room we had and they had the most perfect view. All our parents felt horrible about the room we were given and we requested that our room be changed. We were eventually moved to a plantation priced room (it was one of the rooms of the 2 person villa) and we the had a lawn and pool view. Another very noticable problem with the resort is the customer service by the wait staff especially in the bar area. We chose to meet our parents there for lunch and it took at least 10 minutes to have our drink request taken and it wasn't busy at all. During our stay almost every meal we had there (due to convenience) took long to order, either came out wrong, or we were never checked on for drink refills or if we need salt or pepper etc during the meal. It was very noticable to everyone there that the customer service was bad. The wait staff there with the exception of a few (Oscar is great) weren't very friendly and never seemed to smiled. The moring of our wedding we had breakfast at the restaurant and my orange juice came out with an obvious fly in it. When I politely requested a new glass the waiter look at me like I was inconveniencing him. Needless to say I wasn't too happy with the way everything was going. The wedding coordinator, Javier, did an overall great job, but we ran into several problems with the minister. For starters we were told that morning he had overbooked weddings that day and now they were trying to find someone new. Then we were told that he'd be able to come if we moved the wedding to an hour earlier. We had previousy decided that time because we wanted to take a sunset sail immediately following the wedding and then had dinner, and moving it earlier would have left a big gap of time. Anyway, we said we wanted to keep the 4:00 time if possible. Then when I thought no more stress could happen on my wedding day, I'm told the wedding had to start 30mins later and it ended up starting an hour and a half after it was supposed to because of the minister. I was very upset about all of this because I stood dressed for over an hour with everyone else praying the minister would show.
On the plus side, everything turned out ok in the end. I was able to get married (yeah!) and resort ended up upgrading us to a one bedroom infinity suite for the remainder of our stay. The infinity suite was very nice and we enjoyed being there. If we were to stay again I'd probably stay in a casita. We saw the inside of several of the casitas and they were cute with a great view. I actually think the casitas have a better view than the plantation rooms. I would also advise checking all prices ahead of time especially if you're going there to get married. I shipped 3 prepacked wedding baskets down there to be set in our parents rooms just prior to arrival. That was an extra $60+ charge and then the day before the wedding when you go over everything with the cordinator (which I thought was part of the package) is an extra charge as well. I guess sometimes places get so well established that the small details (the things that make you feel special) are omitted because there's someone else coming right after you willing to pay the same price. The scenery is beautiful which is what you pay for, but the service has room for improvement.
Oh, one more quick thing.....if you go to Ambergris Caye try Blue Moon restaurant. We ate at bunch of places but that was by far our favorite.
