My husband and I decided to get married at VH after it was highly recommended as having the most beautiful beach on San Pedro. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking and the landscaping etc is perfect for any wedding. We booked a plantation room over a year ago and also arranged to have our wedding on the beach. Both of our parents were present for the wedding and they too (due to resort rules) stayed at there.

I was disappointed upon arrival at the resort that the room they had us staying in has absolutely no view and was in the older more outdated portion of the resort. It was small and all we could see from our balcony (which we had been told would have a beach view) was the tops of coconut trees. I was very upset since we had payed so far in advance and had our wedding there that they could not have chosen a better room for us. My mother-in-law had booked the same type of room we had and they had the most perfect view. All our parents felt horrible about the room we were given and we requested that our room be changed. We were eventually moved to a plantation priced room (it was one of the rooms of the 2 person villa) and we the had a lawn and pool view. Another very noticable problem with the resort is the customer service by the wait staff especially in the bar area. We chose to meet our parents there for lunch and it took at least 10 minutes to have our drink request taken and it wasn't busy at all. During our stay almost every meal we had there (due to convenience) took long to order, either came out wrong, or we were never checked on for drink refills or if we need salt or pepper etc during the meal. It was very noticable to everyone there that the customer service was bad. The wait staff there with the exception of a few (Oscar is great) weren't very friendly and never seemed to smiled. The moring of our wedding we had breakfast at the restaurant and my orange juice came out with an obvious fly in it. When I politely requested a new glass the waiter look at me like I was inconveniencing him. Needless to say I wasn't too happy with the way everything was going. The wedding coordinator, Javier, did an overall great job, but we ran into several problems with the minister. For starters we were told that morning he had overbooked weddings that day and now they were trying to find someone new. Then we were told that he'd be able to come if we moved the wedding to an hour earlier. We had previousy decided that time because we wanted to take a sunset sail immediately following the wedding and then had dinner, and moving it earlier would have left a big gap of time. Anyway, we said we wanted to keep the 4:00 time if possible. Then when I thought no more stress could happen on my wedding day, I'm told the wedding had to start 30mins later and it ended up starting an hour and a half after it was supposed to because of the minister. I was very upset about all of this because I stood dressed for over an hour with everyone else praying the minister would show.

On the plus side, everything turned out ok in the end. I was able to get married (yeah!) and resort ended up upgrading us to a one bedroom infinity suite for the remainder of our stay. The infinity suite was very nice and we enjoyed being there. If we were to stay again I'd probably stay in a casita. We saw the inside of several of the casitas and they were cute with a great view. I actually think the casitas have a better view than the plantation rooms. I would also advise checking all prices ahead of time especially if you're going there to get married. I shipped 3 prepacked wedding baskets down there to be set in our parents rooms just prior to arrival. That was an extra $60+ charge and then the day before the wedding when you go over everything with the cordinator (which I thought was part of the package) is an extra charge as well. I guess sometimes places get so well established that the small details (the things that make you feel special) are omitted because there's someone else coming right after you willing to pay the same price. The scenery is beautiful which is what you pay for, but the service has room for improvement.

Oh, one more quick thing.....if you go to Ambergris Caye try Blue Moon restaurant. We ate at bunch of places but that was by far our favorite.

“Best Hotel on Ambergris Caye”

Victoria House

My husband and I stayed at the Victoria House for six nights, and were so pleased with the property and staff that we are likely to return (something we rarely do). While the hotel is not opulent and decadent, it is by far the nicest on the island! Dinner is extraordinary (on par and even better) than most US restaurants. The rooms are very nice...including the towels and amenities (they even have ionic hairdryers). My husband's only dislike was that the AC blew straight out to the bed and was uncomfortable while laying down. The beds have sheers that you can pull around them for more privacy...using these seemed to alleviate the AC issue entirely.

The hotel grounds were lovely, well maintained and the beach was the best on Ambergris. There are a few people that will try to sell you jewelry and the like on the beach, but the hotel staff is great about asking them to leave you alone if you want them to.

Overall, it was one of our best trips. We snorkeled Hol Chan and Mexico Rocks (highly recommended). We also spent a day going into Belize to explore the ATM cave (swimming into cave, climbing over rocks, seeing ancient Mayan pottery and skeletal remains, etc). All of our trips were coordinated by the dive shop, and they did an excellent job!! If there is ANYTHING you want to do, they will arrange it for you.

Have a great time!

My husband and I recently stayed at Victoria House and had a very memorable vacation. First, however, I will start with the cons. We opted to book the least expensive room because we were on a budget. I think the room is an excellent value, because we got to be on the most beautiful resort on the island, but it was small, a little dark, and we could hear voices from the room next door and the deck outside. However, we spent almost no time in our room, because everything else about the resort was so beautiful. The deck outside our room was one of our favorite places, overlooking the pool and beach area, and always cool and breezy because it was covered. The entire grounds are immaculately maintained - there was always someone sweeping the deck, raking the sand, brushing sand off the tiles, etc. The pool and beach area had plenty of lounge chairs, and there were always plenty of fresh towels. What I loved most about Victoria House was the attention to detail. Each night, when we returned to our room, they had turned down our bed and made sure we had plenty of fresh water. We were also very impressed with the food in the restaurant, although the food on the island is all generally very good. Overall, a wonderful stay and we hope to be back.

We just got back from 7 glorious days in Belize. It was one of the best vacations we have had. Victoria House was by far the nicest hotel we saw on the island. We did not go over the bridge so did not see Mata Chica etc. The hotel is very warm and friendly. We made friends with a number of couples while we were there and it was like staying in an small neighborhood. We had some fun times in the bar and the town and at dinner.

We stayed in room 43 which was in Casa Azul. It was a very nice room, large bathroom. The room was not large but it was very nice. Nice bed linens, lots of towels. The only complaint was the 5 am wake up bird. He certainly liked to screech from 5 am to 6 am. The balcony is a large shared deck but we found it cool to hang out with our neighbors and have an evening cocktail.

We had bought the meal plan which was cost effective if you eat all your meals there. The menu is very nice with lots of options. It's not expensive compared to the US but it's pricey for Belize. We ate in town a few times (Casa Picassa, George's and Elvi's). All were very good. The bar prices are fair at the hotel again compared to US but higher than town. Many rooms have small fridges and suites have full kitchens so you can buy yuor own.

We did not rent a golf cart but met some kind people (hi Dudley and Carol!!) who took us into town with them a few times. The cart was a blast so it's worth it. In town we visited Wet Willy's which was fun and Crazy Canucks for Punta music. It was a blast. Also don't miss the crocodile feeding at the water plant. a 2 min walk from VH at sunset. Some local boys throw whole chicken in, it was cool and scary at the same time.

We did two tours; the two stop snorkel ( was great!) and the all day Mantee tour ( a bit long). A note about the tours. If they say you will get back at 4:30, they mean 5:45. You are on island time so if you are on an all day tour, don't book specific dinner reservations. We had a massage on site and it was very good. Better than we had expected.

The resort staff was very nice, the servers learn your names and get to know you. The bar is great although we noticed if we went to town and came back around 9 or 10 it was often closed. If we stayed there it stayed open later. Not sure what the deal was with that.

We loved Belize, a very warm country with friendly people, good prices and great weather.

One other note, if you buy rum and you connect thru the US to another flight, you have to pack the rum in your suitcase once you get to the US before your connecting flight. We were surprised by this although the rum made it fine back home.

If you are thinking twice about VH or Belize, don't we just loved it and can't wait to go back.

Victoria House is a beautiful resort on the beach w/ 2 pools, a bar & restaurant. My husband & I stayed in a casita there for 3 nights and enjoyed it. The casita (looked like a hut!!) was beautiful, but the bathroom was small & outdated. Also, the room never got very cool as we always had the AC on full blast and still felt warm.

The pools never got very crowded so it was easy to find chairs and relax. The staff was courteous and town was a 8-10 minute cab ride away. We ate at the bar for lunch a few times which was good, but didn't check out the hotel restaurant.

Overall, a relaxing stay at a nice resort.
