“Watch out!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2005

My friend and I just spent 4 nights at the Sunbreeze Hotel in San Pedro. For the most part, we had a wonderful time there -- the rooms were spacious and clean; the pool was nice; the hotel was in a great location; and the dive shop was very helpful and courteous.

On the morning we checked out however, we ran into some major problems that would make me think twice about returning to the hotel. Upon checkout, housekeeping checks each guest's room to do an inventory of hotel belongings. We were told that we had taken the plastic "Please do not disturb" sign from the room, and would be charged for it. In actuality, we never had a "do not disturb" sign to begin with -- and even if we did, stealing this plastic sign would be the last thing that would ever cross our minds.

We were held up for 30 minutes as the hotel manager accused us of stealing the sign. The head of housekeeping was called down and blatantly lied to our faces when she told the manager, "I personally checked to see if they had a "do not disturb" sign in their room the day they checked in to the hotel." After 30 minutes of arguing, we were finally given back our credit card slip (that was given upon check-in for any incidentals) without any additional charges.

While being charged for some sign is not such a big deal -- the problem is that the hotel can claim to have given you a number of items in the room -- but if you don't know what is supposed to be in the room upon check-in, you can't perform your own little "inventory" of items. Needless to say, it left a very bad taste in our mouths after an overall enjoyable stay in Belize.

Friends and I went to Ambergris Caye to go scuba diving in January 2003 and stayed at the SunBreeze. We loved it! The rooms were simply decorated but very clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Be advised that the hotel doesn't really have the kind of beach you can sunbathe on and swim from, however the hotel pool is within spitting distance of the ocean and has a nice deck; you can gaze out at the ocean while you sunbathe. There's a make-shift volleyball court in between the pool and the ocean that the school kids sometimes come to play at on their way home in the afternoon, so don't expect to be taking any naps in the sun at that time of the day.

We thought the food at the hotel restaurant was great but a little pricey, however there are lots of restaurants in town with great food for reasonable prices. If you're vegan be aware that it was a bit of challenge to find vegan meals but if you're willing to go door to door and look at menus you'll manage just fine.

"Downtown" is just a walk down the street and you can cover the whole thing on foot in twenty minutes. There a lots of restaurants and gift shops and several bars and nightclubs. However be aware that the action seems to shut down at 11pm and the streets become pretty much deserted. If you're going away to party all night this is not the place to go!

The locals in town tended to keep to themselves but if you asked anyone for directions they were friendly and did their best for you. I always felt safe and never heard anyone report any uncomfortable situations. The town is very small and there's kids everywhere, playing unsupervised by adults because there's nothing that can really happen to them. Everyone knows everyone and there is very little traffic; 98% of it consists of golf carts! Lots of starving stray dogs around, which was a little upsetting, but that's life in South America.

The hotel is right next door to the airport but we only heard one or two planes all week long and we never heard them early in the morning or late at night, so it's really not a problem.

The dive shop on site was great; nice, helpful staff and good diving! We saw rays and nurse sharks on almost every dive, several turtles and one morray eel. Make sure you go to Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley!!! It costs a bit to go ($5 or $10 US) but it was well worth the money; when snorkling we got up close and personal with lots of rays and turtles. They are so friendly and will swim within inches of you so you can stroke them (don't grab!) as they go by.

We went diving at the Blue Hole, which was NOT a fun trip. The boat ride was pure hell; it was an hour ride in extremely big waves and the water just kept coming overboard in great waves and drenching everyone. We were soaked, shivering cold and green with seasickness the whole way. The actual dive into the hole was nothing to write home about either. All we saw was huge groupers and it was such a short dive because they took everyone down as a big group and had to base the dive on the lowest common denominator. There were some pretty poor divers in the group and we all suffered for it. After the awful ride and disappointing dive it hit us that we had paid extra for it, which just added insult to injury! If you do go to the Blue Hole ask the Dive Masters ahead of time if they can divide the experienced and inexperienced divers into two groups.

Other than the Blue Hole the diving was great and the dive staff were all really nice guys. They treat you like adults and pretty much leave you to yourself if you're certified but if you want a little hand-holding they're right there for you.

I would definately recommend the SunBreeze if you're going to dive!! Feel free to e-mail me at nerf_@hotmail.com if you need more info.

This hotel is a great find and won't kill your pocketbook. We went to Belize for New Years and while we tried months in advance (and in vain) to book at Ramon's, we ended up at the SunBreeze with expectations of a Best Western. We were wrong. The hotel was in a great location, right next to Ramon's, and has a great restaurant/bar right along the seawall. Rooms are basic, clean, but not overly decorated in typical mayan flare. It is close to "downtown" and just the pool was perfect. You could swim and stare at the ocean all day long. While its more conventional than Ramons, I don't think you'll be overly disappointed with the SunBreeze. Do ask for one of the rooms on the end, facing the ocean, its worth the extra $$.

Sunbreeze is great! The dive packages there are so cheap, and Aqua Dives is a nice operation. The resataurant is overpriced, I think, although food in San Pedro's restaurants isn't as cheap as you'd think...There's a great little bar a little ways down on the beach, but Sunbreeze's bar is reasonable. It's in a great location, near the tiny airstrip (but you don't hear any planes, really) and near all the bars and restuarants along the beach.

I like a lot of things about this resort. I thought the hotel staff was genuinely concerned about our needs. I like how we got off the airplane and just walked across the runway to the hotel. It is on the beach. The diving was quick and easy. It wasn't a 5 star hotel but if want a great value and comfortable accommodations this is a great deal.
