Typically I like staying at remote small resorts, but this trip was solo and being closer to the city felt more appropriate. Not being a fan of large hotels, the SunBreeze was a nice fit for me. It's in the middle of everything (across from the airport, middle of town, etc.) yet didn't seem overly noisy.
Service was very good. They are helpful but don't go out of their way. It's not 5 star by any stretch of the imagination, but very clean, comfortable and I felt very comfortable there.
The restaurant and bar are great (and prices seemed reasonable). After checking in, go have a drink at the bar with the cool breeze hitting you as you look out to the ocean . . . . you'll be very happy you are there. (Make sure you head to the tackelbox for drinks too - best during the day w/windows open) There’s an upstairs area from the bar that really isn’t used for anything . . . there’s a couple hammocks and that’s all. It was a great place to hang out and read or just take in the view. I did yoga up there a couple times too – had the place to myself nearly every day.
Diving with the onsite dive shop (Aqua Divers) was great too. Very professional and knowledgeable, yet flexible to choose dives that worked best for the group they had on the boat. It's worth the effort and price to do the day to The Blue Hole. A cool dive, plus to great wall dives, great lunch on an island --- just an all around great day. Make sure you do a night dive too ---- very cool with the reef really coming to life once the sun is down.
Overall, I was happy w/the SunBreeze and would stay there again.
I spent a few days at the Sunbreeze, diving with Aqua and exploring the island, my first visit. Then I moved on to Caye Caulker, which suited me far better.
Sunbreeze is a clean roomy resort, with a decent pool and an excellent restaurant. Consistently excellent food. Must be one of the best places to eat on the Caye.
It is convenient to walk to other attractions in San Pedro, but I was not at all aware of any noise porblem. Cable TV and inexpensive room phones to call home.
I managed to do some swimming off their dock, but eventually the boat traffic drives you back. Ambergris is not noted for its beaches.
A problem arose with my reservation. After confirming the reservation over and over and sending my credit card info, they STILL had me fill out and send an authorization form. I sent it and assumed that they received it, for I heard nothing more, and the stay was all paid for in advance. On arrival I found that they had cancelled it because they had not heard from me. Wish they had mentioned that in the frequent e-mail exchanges. Fortunate they had a nice room for me, and I forgot the misunderstanding. On check out they never mentioned that they had not been paid. When I got home they called me to say they had forgotten to have me pay on check out. I cehcked with my credit card and found that indeed I had not been charged. SO I had to go through this nonsense one more time of downloading their form, filling it out by hand, and scanning it and resending it. Don't know why they wouldn't just let me send my card number. Their office is VERY messed up.
All in all, it's a nice place to stay and eat. Just be very careful with the reservation. I would have been very peeved if they had cancelled my reservation and not been able to accomodate me, which must happen to a lot of people during the busy season.
On Friday there is a Mayan buffet somewhere downtown, with marimbas playing outside, Not to be missed and cheap.
I think the hotel was great for a 3.5 star hotel. Aqua Dives is located at the hotal and is very convenient in setting up dives and snorkel trips.
One negative about my trip was that the advertised partial ocean view really means that if you look real close you can almost see water.
If you want to dive and snorkel, go. If you are looking for more than that, don't go. Nothing more to do than that.
We just returned from a stay at the Sunbreeze. We were very happy with the hotel. I was especially happy about the location.
Many of the other hotels on Ambergris required a taxi or golf cart to get to downtown. The Sunbreeze was right in downtown. This made it easy to get to other activities such as wind surfing (100 ft from hotel) and the Dive shop was right on the hotel. It also made it easy to try the many excellent restaurants in San Pedro. We just walked the couple of blocks to most restaurants. I would recommend the hotel to anyone that wants to be a little closer to the action in San Pedro but still feel like you were in your own resort.
