“Great atmosphere, professional guides”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

I can't say enough about my recent stay at El Pescador. The management has done an excellent job at creating an inviting, family atmosphere, and every member of the staff knows you by name. The accommodations were comfortable, the location is ideal, and the variety of activities makes it easy to find something to do. While I was there primarily to fish, I also took a snorkeling trip that lodge arranged for me. It was great fun, and next time I want to bring my family. Lorianne has done a great job organizing the fishing, and my guide Caesar was outstanding. I will definitely ask for him next time I come. When I wasn't fishing with a guide, I didn't have trouble finding bonefish on the flats in front of the lodge or in the lagoon behind the lodge. I was able to explore this area by borrowing one of the lodge's fishing kayaks. Ali, Chris , and Steve were all very attentive hosts, and you can tell they take pride in El Pescador. I highly recommend this lodge.

I had a great time and the staff were very helpful. It truley is an all-inclusive resort with many opportunites to do both land and sea adventures. I was there to go fishing and we had an excellent guide (Raton). He was patient with me as I was not a very experienced fly fisherman. In the three days I fished I caught plenty of Bonefish. In the evenings all the guests would sit around the dinner table outside and swap stories. Its just a great atmosphere and not pretentious at all. The fishing director, Lori Ann is excellent and very helpful in fine tuning your cast. Accomodations are neat and clean, but not overly spacious. But we hardly were in our room at all. The food was excellent all the way from breakfast to dinner to midnight snacks! I'd go back in a heartbeat.

What a great week for our family at El Pescador! We stayed in villa 3 and loved the spacious living areas and bedrooms. Beds were comfortable, A/C worked great, and all the staff were outstanding. From Marlin and Judy in the office to the fishing guides - Luis, Raton and Jerry's famous snorkeling, fishing and beach lunch, everyone we encountered was friendly, kind and informative. The breakfasts and lunches were great with plenty of choices. Dinner was well prepared. We ate dinner two nights at the resort and other evenings walked or took a water taxi to town. My husband and son learned to fly fish and Lauri-Ann, the fishing director, was always there to great us upon return from fishing.

All in all very relaxing, fun and full of new experiences.

Room Tip: Choose a villa or villa room because they have refrigerators in them.

We had a very lovely stay at El Pescador earlier this month. After spending the first half of our vacation in San Ignacio, some beach-front time was exactly what we needed to wind down our trip. We feel very lucky we ended up staying at El Pescador – its laid-back, relaxed, makes-you-feel-like family atmosphere is much more our style than the “trendy/scene-y” places closer to town.

The service at the hotel was generally very good. Judy and Marlin in the front office are wonderful. They are so friendly and on top of things. (Unfortunately we did have a few issues with subpar housekeeping but Marlin took care of those for us as soon as we mentioned them.)

We booked a few activities through the hotel, which was very convenient. The day we spent with Jerry and his son fishing in the morning, eating the fish we caught for lunch on a secluded beach, and snorkeling in the afternoon was one of the best days of our entire trip. Jerry and his son, J.J., are so nice and provided very personalized attention. The lunch they prepared, including conch ceviche from conch we helped catch with Jerry, was outstanding. Hard to beat fish you caught 30 minutes prior!

The breakfasts were very tasty. I especially loved the huevos rancheros and the chocolate chip pancakes. We also had dinner there a few nights which was great. It was just what we want on vacation – good, simple, local food. The chocolate pudding for dessert one night was utterly divine.

What impressed me was that the owners of the resort checked in with us, both at the beginning and end of our stay to introduce themselves and ask how our stay was. That really shows that they care and aren’t just resting on their tripadvisor laurels.

El Pescador is a very special small resort. Run by Ali and her brother, the service and the resort are impecable. We were delayed coming down and reservations for transfers and outings had to be juggled several times. This was done without hesitation and much sympathy. Our recent stay turned out to be the best family vacation we have had with our 2 teenage sons. My husband took each one fishing for a day, catching fish for a wonderful shore lunch prepared by the El Pescador guide at at the ranger station in the northern Bacalar Chico reserve. Everyone also caught bonefish. Lori-Ann Murphy, the Director of Fishing, made sure we had exactly the right guide for mixed ability trip and the boys came off the vacation looking forward to fishing again. All we could ask for. The villas were spacious, immaculate and very comfortable. Hammock on upper deck overlooking the ocean was heaven. I did yoga each day just down the beach in a pavillion over the ocean with ocean breezes. All meals delicious and fresh. Cocktails before dinner fantastic with dusk falling and ocean breezes. No question or request is too small and you are greeted by a smile at every turn. You feel within minutes of arrival that you are the most welcome guest and it stays that way till you wave goodbye.

Room Tip: Ask for a villa 1

We flew from London to spend 10 days at El Pescador over Christmas 2012. Our long journey was more than compensated by the warm welcome we received from the staff who remembered us from our last visit 3 years ago and treated us like old friends. There is an excellent atmosphere at the lodge and returning guests are officially made members of the 'El Pescador family'. The food is entirely home made and always fresh, while special diets are catered for. This is an ideal vacation for the whole family with plenty of activities, ranging from doing nothing by the pool to zip-lining in the jungle. Diving under the patient guidance of Alonso was a particular treat. Although this is an ideal fishing destination for beginners with casting clinics from the dock, the serious fisherman will not be disappointed. The Permit fishing was spectacular in our week and one of us, with expert guidance from Sinoe, caught at least one Permit everyday (9 in total) - exceptional even for a dedicated fishing lodge. We will definitely be returning for a 4th visit!

Room Tip: Villas are a little more expensive but offer more privacy for families.

El Pescador is a wonderful destination for those seeking outdoor adventure such as fly fishing, scuba diving, kayaking, cycling, kite boarding etc. The lodge staff is very friendly and attentive. The 3 bedroom villa we rented was right on the beach and served the purposes of our family perfectly. Food was great as was the fishing. I managed to get my first grand slam on the fly while vacationing there over the Christmas holidays.

Room Tip: The villas are very nice for large families

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
El Pescador’s beachfront lodge and villas are situated on over 45 private acres with ambiance, specializing in fishing, diving and eco-adventures. We are family-owned and operated with emphasis on creating camaraderie and an authentic Belizean experience. El Pescador is proud of our philosophy to protect and nurture friendship, adventure and the environment. El Pescador has long been known as a world-class fishing destination offering outstanding flats fishing for bonefish, tarpon and permit. El Pescador has been the only resort on Ambergris Caye specializing in saltwater flats fishing since 1974. Since coming under new ownership in 1997, the resort has established itself as an eco-friendly tropical getaway, including a commitment to offset all carbon emissions generated by its guests flying to Belize. Donations are made on behalf of guests to a local Belizean non-profit organization, Green Reef Environmental Educational and Coastal Research Institute, to offset the carbon emissions used to travel to Belize. El Pescador was also among the key organizations to implement the new Law protecting bonefish, tarpon and permit as catch and release species. This is the most all encompassing legislation of its kind worldwide. It is great news for Belizeans, anglers, tourists and conservationists alike. El Pescador is a serene and gracious establishment on the doorstep of the world’s largest living Barrier Reef. The villas are perfect accommodations for couples seeking romance and privacy, and for families and small groups traveling together. All rooms and villas are beachfront and have unobstructed views of the Caribbean blue waters. In addition to unequaled fishing, this first-rate resort offers all the eco-adventures which take full advantage of Belize’s exotic flora and fauna. Scuba diving, snorkeling, manatee watching, cave-tubing and zip-lining, and Maya archaeological explorations are just a small assortment of the activities available while staying at El Pescador. ... more   less
