“beautiful setting and awesome staff!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2012

The staff is really what made our stay so enjoyable, they were friendly and full of helpful information about fun stuff to do on the island. The room was comfortable and the pools were great for relaxing.

Paid Getaway through Interval. Opted for the water taxi from Belize City to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye instead of Municipal Air travel. San Pedro Water Taxi: staff was great 1 hour 10 minutes to San Pedro. Got off Water Taxi walked to Ultimate Golf Cart Rentals about 1 block. Drove to Captain Morgans, can't get lost 1 road from 1 end of island to other. Once over the bridge the road is sand and bumpy but if you slow down it was fine. Captain Morgans: food was excellent, on site store had basic needs but a little pricy (trip to San Pedro grocery market more affordable)
Ocean front villas were great, clean and private yet convenient to cart parking lot and bar/restaurant. Free Wifi did not reach to the villas but was no problem at the bar. Lumanai Ruins was worth the excursion price but it's a full day. The Reef Snorkle direct from C.M. Dock was great. Recommend the Palapa Bar for pulled pork and bbq wings you can drive or walk from C.M. All in all the entire Week was Very relaxing, very casual, The staff at C.M is very accomodating and will do whatever they can to make sure you are happy.

Room Tip: ask for the Beachfront Villas

We just returned from a relaxing week at Captain Morgan's. When I saw the small plane we had to ride to get to Ambergris Caye, I was a little nervous, but the ride was quick and smooth, and we even saw a sting rey from above! From the airstrip in San Pedro, a taxi took us to the resort's boat, then a short 7 minute ride to CMR. Our check-in went very smoothly, and we had our luggage delivered quickly. Gilbert gave us a nice tour of the property, so we knew where everything was right away. The room was very comfortable, and there were flowers on the bed, towels, sink, shower, and even in the toilet bowl! Nice touch! Culture night was fun and the food and music were good. Oscar at the bar was so friendly, as was the whole staff. We toured the Mayan ruins and did the cave tubing--both well worth the trip! My husband had a 2 tank dive, and they even saw a 14 foot hammerhead shark! What a thrill! They have kayaks to use to row out near the reef, so we tied up to a buoy and snorkeled right there, for no cost. I had heard that the water in Belize is gin clear, and it is! The beaches aren't really usable for swimming, as there is sea grass everywhere, but we noticed the same thing in the out islands of the Bahamas. Meals were really good, but the best was the fried grouper special one night--to die for! And I don't even like fish! We attended a ceviche making class one afternoon at one of the swim up bars. It was delicious! We rented a golf cart one day to drive into town and it was a bumpy ride, but an adventure! The boat is definitely the fastest and smoothest way to go. We also walked down the beach a few times and ate at different restaurants. We never had a bad meal all week! Our one complaint was the tipping situation. At most of the onsite locations, tips had to be paid in cash, rather than just add it to the room bill. This was inconvenient to carry money all the time. We didn't try fishing, but we saw one group come in with a nice bunch of fish. Our biggest plus was the friendly people working at the resort! Smiles were everywhere! It was a very relaxing vacation!

This report is for the period 4 -11 Aug 12. In this report I would like to give 4 stars to our resort, Capt Morgan’s Retreat on Ambergris Caye, Belize. Since 2000, my wife and I have been trading our Marriot Grande Vista timeshare for timeshares in diving locations around the world (using Interval International). Reaching Ambergris Caye requires landing on the mainland at Belize City then connecting at the international airport or traveling to the municipal airport (add cost and time for taxi ride to see if you desire this option). We caught our flight (Tropic Air) to Ambergris Caye from the International airport (I give the edge to Tropic Air over Mayan Air). Unknown to us, Capt Morgan’s had people on the payroll who helped us all the way from the International Airport to the resort itself. We were loaded on an aircraft to San Pedro (Ambergris Caye) and our luggage (extra bags for dive gear) was right behind us on a trailing flight. We claimed everything in San Pedro where a Capt Morgan employee loaded us in a truck to the waterfront (5 minutes) where a Capt Morgan boat loaded us up for the “Water Taxi” run to the resort. Our 2 bedroom accommodations were only a few hundred feet from the ocean, and one of three pools was twenty feet from our door. The rooms were very nice, and the kitchen was full sized. Flat screens were in both bedrooms and the living room. We also had internet, but no phone lines. My Black Berry worked the whole time. I think most dive operators will pick you up at the Capt Morgan Dock for your dive trips. Unfortunately, Hurricane Ernesto had been brewing in the Gulf of Mexico, and made landfall north of Belize on our third night. We were able to make two days of dives before we started making hurricane preparations (nothing new to us since we are from the Florida Gulf Coast). The north landfall did not produce much of a swell. We did not lose power or internet. The staff did not seem overly concerned, but they prepared by removing every third board on the dock and beaching their boats. If you have never been through a CAT II, you might have been concerned. We have been through Cat IV. We prepared our own food when it was too rainy to go out (one night), but we ate at the resort twice, and at another resort down the beach on other nights. I must say the other resort had better food. Just before the storm and afterwards, we rented a golf cart to drive the 3.5 miles into San Pedro for shopping and a look-about. All but 3 miles from Capt Morgan’s to San Pedro is rock and dirt road (quaint if you don’t have to do it every day). On our next to last day, we let Capt Morgan’s arrange a visit to Mayan Ruins on the mainland. This gave us the chance to experience Mayan Air and the Municipal Airport (not awe inspiring). The people we met, the guide, the ferry crossing, and the ruins were quite cool and we were glad we made the day long trip. In short – We need to make one more trip to Capt Morgan’s and Ambergris Caye for a full scuba diving experience.

Room Tip: We are only familiar with the 2-bedroom villas on the Beach. Our 2-bedroom had a second story two b...

3½ miles north of San Pedro
Firstly, strongly recommend ordering airport/water taxi transportation from San Pedro airport. The speed boat leaves from the Wee Willie pier and is about a 7-10 minute ride.
Super friendly and helpful desk staff, especially Jésus; multilingual including English & Spanish. Cute helper James and Zach is the great guy in Sales.
Complimentary welcome drink: rum punch or Belikie beer (good!)
Efficiency was not strong suit; took over an hour to get luggage and water
Secondly, recommend ordering a 5 gallon bottle of water upon arrival $5.50; lodging water is safe, but brackish.
Thirdly, recommend bring a lot of $1 bills for tipping
Units are beautiful (Mexican, Guatemalan, marine, & Belizean motif) & have kitchens
No room phones
Restaurant has good food. Super service by Jeffrey aka Osvaldo.
Try the bacon cheese burger
Laundry: washer $5, dryer $5
There is a casino on the premises
Recommend: book Hoi Chan/Shark Alley snorkeling trip with Abby & Gonzalo; there are fantastic (you touch sharks & sting rays!)

My husband and I are actually staying at Xanadu, but decided to visit Captain Morgan for the cultural night on Tuesday, which includes a $22 buffet of Belizian dishes and live music. We called the resort the morning of and they said they would pick us up at our resort on the Captain Morgan's boat, and after specifically asking, they said they they would bring us back. However, after spending our money on the dinner and more money at drinks on the bar, we were ready to go home. That is when they inform us that now they cannot take us back to our resort, they can only drop us off in town. Our resort is about a mile south of town, which means we had to take a cab the rest of the way (as it was pouring rain!) We were extremely upset as we have never been treated so poorly during our 2 stays in Belize. It felt like they told us one thing to get us in the door and spend our money there, but after we spent our money, they could care less about their customer. In addition, we were not allowed in the casino as I would not leave my camera bag with the sketchy security guard. To top it off, the food and drinks were not even all that great (much better options elsewhere in town). The only enjoyable thing about the evening was the live music - they were great!

We are return visitors to Belize and Ambergris Caye and that was the FIRST and LAST time we will ever visit Captain Morgans.

My boyfriend and I loved Captain Morgans. We were just recently there for a week, not long enough, considering traveling from North Dakota took all day. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They really hooked us up, thanks Jesus :) The food is great, lobster is a must. Very good, and the rum punch!!! We enjoyed kayaking, snorkleing, cavetubing, and tours of the Mayan ruins...none of which were booked or planned until we got there. So relaxing and peaceful. Do forget sunscreen and bug spray. Dont bother taking your phone because it wont work!!! Awesome vacation!!!
