Jerry Jeff Walker wrote that being in Belize is like "living a dream down here" and Captain Morgan's is the dream place!

Awesome staff....volleyball at lunch time....kayak to the reef and snorkle in the afternoon....

Going to town for dinner and shopping by taking a 5 minute boat ride is a lot "cooler" than taking a dirty cab, although there's lots to do at the resort for food, parties and entertainment.

To Captain Morgans Mgt - Keep that Reggae singer that was there on Sunday evening! for the cocktail party. He was great

We'll be back and recommend it highly to anyone!!!

I stayed here with my wife and her family for a week and besides the food and the reef (something the hotel has nothing to do with) it was a pretty horrible experience. Our room was a mess, broken air conditioning, bordering construction on two sides. There was a lack of any caring or help from the hotel to any of the needs we may have had, from fresh towels in the room to an AC that worked. They seemed far too concerned with desperately trying to get people to buy into a timeshare, rather than take care of their "short term" guests.

There is no beach at the hotel, and the grounds often had garbage on them (particularly the closer you were to the edge of their property line). Just never felt comfortable while staying there. And the worst experience by far was one of the trips we took. In brief we went on a tubing trip and my mother in law almost drown because of a total disregard for safety concerns by the tour operators. She literally got sucked down into the river and was only semiconscious by the time I was able to pull her out. The tour company that the hotel used had no response or apology for any of this, and neither did the hotel. Even though other people from the tour complained for other reasons even beyond that. We finally voiced our concerns with the front desk and they were nonplussed. It was shocking just how much they didn't care. And that was evident from the moment we arrived to he moment we left. A bad experience at a bad resort.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon here and we are so very glad we did. Everything about our trip was excellent. The location is absolutely beautiful! The villas were incredible: very clean, well kept daily by staff, and relaxing! The food was good, and the property staff was very, very friendly. What a way to spend a honeymoon! I am looking forward to heading back on an Anniversary.

We just returned from Captain Morgan's. I am so glad we didn't let the negative reviews deter us. If you are expecting the Hilton, then stay at a Hilton. This resort was absolutely perfect for the type of vacation we look forward to. Directly on the beach, 1/2 mile to the reef, two pools, attentive and friendly staff, clean rooms, good food.
Our unit had a kitchen and the resort had a store, so we ate our breakfast in the room and had snacks and beverages available also. We ate a couple of times at the resort restaurant. The food was good and the staff attentive. We also ate at a couple of restaurants within walking distance to Captain Morgan's (bring a strong flash light and you are fine walking at night along the beach). We did eat in San Pedro one night and made one trip into town to check out the shops. That was enough for us. The town is much to busy for our tastes.
Ana and Felix were so helpful in explaining the trips that were available and their input helped us to choose what was best for us. We snorkled twice, Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley and the best...Tranquility Bay! My husband loves to fish and the options are endless, beach, pier, flats, reef and deep sea. He was in heaven.
We were not at all pressured to buy. Lorraine extended an invitation to attend a preview of the new units and to take a tour, at our convenience. She was always available to help us with everything throughout the week and we enjoyed the time we spent talking with her. We did schedule a tour with her and ended up buying a timeshare unit. Everyone on the sales staff was courteous and professional. From our perspective there was no hard pressed sales pitch. The new units and their set up is great. Buying a 2 bedroom allows us a myriad of options to use, rent, or exchange.
We are planning on going back in June and hopefully again in January or February of 2008. I would recommend Captain Morgan's to anyone who wants a quiet location, a laid back experience and the option of nightlife via the water taxi into town.

My boyfriend and I just got back from Captain Morgan's Retreat and had the most amazing time! This was our first trip to Belize. At first I was a little nervous about staying there after reading some of the reviews on this website. However, once we arrived, I instantly knew we had made the right choice.

We stayed in one their casitas which I highly recommend for those who want more privacy, are planning to spend most of there time with activities and that do not need the extra amenities (e.g. kitchen, tv, phone). We had A/C, a mini-fridge and cd player in the casita. If you don't have an iPod, bring some CDs so you can listen to music while you relax on the front porch.

Everyone at the resort was very friendly and always there to serve us. Ana from the activities center was awesome. When we wanted to do activities on the days the resort did not offer, she called around and found other tour operators to book with. All we had to do was show up at the dock for the boat to pick us up.

The location of the resort is a little far from the heart of San Pedro. We had to take a water taxi to go into town. There was one day we rode on bikes into town. The location was not a problem for us since we did not go into town that much. We only made the trip if we wanted to go elsewhere for dinner or to go to the bars. What is nice about Captain Morgan's is that we could relax on the porch/beach without a lot of traffic passing through.

The restaurant at the resort was good. Every Thursday is all-you-can-eat pasta night with a live jazz band. Every Tuesday is Belizean Culture night where they have a buffet, live reggae band, limbo and local vendors selling jewely and crafts.

We did not get bugged at all about timeshares. I think they decided not to waste their time with us after they found out we were not married. I enjoyed the resort so much that at the end of the trip I wanted to know about the timeshare opportunities! They are currently building new units on the property.

Overall, this is one of the nicest, well-equipped resorts on Ambergris Caye. They took very good care of us and made our first trip to Belize an exciting and memorable one! This is definitely a place we would like to come back to.

  • Liked — The casita
  • Disliked — Apparently there are more sandflies the further north you are. Bring max strength insect repellant!!
