“It's so good that we went twice in one day.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013 via mobile

We love food, and we came to El Fogon based on the recommendation of the manager at our resort. It's tiny, but the staff and food were awesome. While ordering lunch, our friendly waiter was explaining the special of the day, tamalitos de chaya, when a woman sitting at the table next to us interrupted to sell us further on the dish's merits. Turns out, she's the owner and she not only pitched the special, but she also went in the kitchen to bring us a taste of Belizean smoked fish (think dry rub BBQ not lox) to try. It was fantastically flavorful. At dinner after I exclaimed how excellent the conch fritters were, Luis, the other owner, came over to share his recipe going from how the fishermen collect the conch to how the honey mustard dipping sauce is also made from scratch. If you're looking for local food with friendly service, this is your place!

“True Belizean meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

This is not "gourmet dining", but it is great tasting food, fixed in the traditional Belize fashion, at a very reasonable price. The restaurant itself is very basic -- a few picnic tables on a sandy floor, the menu for the day on a chalk board (when an entree is no longer available, just wipe it off the board). Don't be put off by the appearance -- the food is delicious. It's fixed on the "fogon", a wood-heated hearth, in large kettles -- the type of wood used gives it a distinctive flavor. There are lots of "stews", but also a variety of other entrees. One of us had the pork stew, the other a grilled grouper. The entrees were served with (of course) rice with black beans with an optional habanero (hot!) sauce, and (our choice) cole slaw (delicious!). We washed the meal down with a Belikin beer and a lime juice with dark rum. The restaurant is (contrary to what we had read) open for dinner as well as lunch.

“Great Food, Atmosphere and Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

We decided to eat here on recommendation from our neighbor owner at the condos we were spending the week at for our honeymoon. What a great treat! We had the fish balls and conch fritters for our appetizer and had the waiters favorites. My wife had the Orange Ginger Shrimp and I had the creole--fish, conch and shrimp. As the other recent reviewer stated be forewarned on the hot sauce. One is smoking and the other just has a bite. Both were very flavorful and one was very hot. I will go back again as the price was nice and the food was great! We've added a panoramic photo of the restaurant

“Awesome Mexican-style restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

As it was explained, a 'fogon' is the cast iron pots where meat is slow cooked. Prices were very reasonable, and the only thing I regret is that I didn't try something more adventurous, like the gibnut. The food is wonderful, and I suggest you listen to the server when he or she warns you about the hot sauce. I LOVE spicy food, and I had to use it sparingly.

“El Fogon you do not want to miss when in San Pedro, try the whole fish!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

Once again we have come to have a meal here. Brought my son and his buddy. The prices and servers were welcoming, explaining the dishes that they had for the day.Food was amazing, as it was last time. Explored more dishes, such as the chicken stew (great flavour), chicken soup and a local tostada dish. Very fresh and plenty on your plate. It will be the first and last place we treat our selves on island. Do drop in worth the 15 BZ as it works out to 7.50 Canadian, and your more than willing to throw in a tip..enjoy!
