“Very beautiful well appointed suite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2014

We enjoyed our stay very much. Our rooms were beautiful and very clean and bright. Lots of hot water and king size beds. Screened verandah and pool and hot tub. Fully equipped kitchen and great staff we were able to use their bikes and rode everywhere. The roads are not good and biking was easiest. Water taxis also available

Room Tip: Do not think there is a bad room anywhere in this place

Just spent a week here from Feb.5 - 12. What an awesome get away. We got the newest garden cabana. It is fantastic. Beautiful and comfortable. We spent most of our time just relaxing on the beach or by the pool. Long walks along the beach and when we weren't cooking for ourselves in our cabana, walking to one of the near by restaurants for some very good meals.

I would love to go back many more times.

We have stayed here in the past and had a great time. This time we stayed in town but came north of town to kayak the lagoons. We couldn't find anyone in town that rented kayaks on the lagoon side. We knew they had kayaks from our past experience. We went and asked and since the people staying there were all out on adventures, we got a YES. We had a fantastic time in the calm lagoons and the birds were amazing.

We started our trip in Caulker and took the water taxi to Ambergris. We were picked up by a taxi arranged by Cocotal. The water taxi from Caulker was late, but the "pick-up" taxi in Ambergris was there nonetheless. He had some other customers with us and took us to a grocery while he took them to the airport. Get coffee there. The driver was superb in his organization. We had just the right amount of time to grab some snacks, and go to the liquor store pretty much right next door. Get Belikins there. He will also stop on the way back to the airport to return the bottles. Recycle yeah!!

Our ride was educational, and bumpy once your past the North bridge. Excellent service.

We were welcomed with a rum beverage and asked what we wanted to do and if they could help us with anything. They can arrange all kinds of excursions. Our cabana was the peach one. A lovely view of the ocean ( @ 150-200 ft. back) These cabanas are so lovely. Way bigger than you think. Gorgeous ceiling. A comfy bed with plenty of pillows. Good air conditioning - you don't really need it accept for evening. Fully equipped kitchen. Coffee maker. Nice shower - plenty of warm water. A fresh water, water tank for your drinking needs. Ours had maybe two days left and they replaced it before we asked. They are so great with housekeeping. There is a little "foot dip" at your stairs for sand but our room was kept so nice. Plenty of towels, soap, t.p. We never had a chance to need anything. Superb service. My only concern is I didn't know how to tip. We tipped every day at the room. If we got a bike or kayak. Anytime we needed anything but, it felt like we were doing something weird. I'm not sure but maybe we were supposed to tip the manager at the end? Oops. This also happened in Caye Caulker. Maybe Belize tipping is different. On the mainland we couldn't tip enough. Sorry for our ignorance.

Great dock with a "palapa". Great dock across street at "lagoon" side. Always a relaxing place to lounge. Good loungy water front area. Right next door is an Inn with a dive shop with all the stuff you need. Also a bar if you are too lazy to fix your own drink or want a quick meal. Superb location. Palapa bar is 10 minute bike ride. Many other restaurants within walking or biking distance. Bikes are included. So are kayaks. The caretakers are so friendly. One day, a 6+ foot Boa constrictor was hit by a bike and the caretaker carried it to the lagoon side. She didn't make it, but he made the effort. We got to see a new subspecies of magnolia warbler which was hanging out in the Coconut Palm directly shading the porch of our cabana. We met a sweet boy our first 15 minutes there at the palapa. He showed us his snapper catch and the lion fish under the dock. This place is so good, good, good!

Mara the dog is an old soul, get to know her. This dog should be cloned. We love dogs but this one becomes a friend. She came with us everywhere, she is welcomed everywhere. She is very protective of her guests and makes you feel so safe, even though you don't need it. One day she must have busy when we went to breakfast, when we came back she did a doggy hurkey and came running to us like we were her best friends. All she asks is a little coconut french toast. Love this puppy.

Bring a flashlight for walking to restaurants and bars. Big hermit crabs that you don't want to bother. So cool.

I'm not fancy, but I am picky - just ask my husband - this place will find a spot in your soul. Good people. Good property. Quiet but convenient location. Great dog. Don't hesitate to go here. Loved it, would definitely go back.

Room Tip: If you can get the beach front one. Do it. It is as close to the water as you can get at this prop...

We stayed one great week. We used the bikes (heed the warnings not to bike after dark, but great in the day light), kayaked out to the reef to snorkel (an easy paddle, the water is about 3.5ft deep at the bouy which made for easy in and easy out, a lot of fish, coral and HUGE eagle rays), we snorkeled at the reef at the end of the dock (a lot of fish, a barracuda even, but visibility and coral isn't so pretty from all the boat traffic stirring up sand). We bought beer at the liquor store on the way in, its he same price everywhere; resorts, honor bar, SanPedro bars as it is in the store, so don't bother. there's also a grocery store jut north of the bridge(about a 2mile walk on he beach) that will give you a free golf cart ride back to Cocotal with your purchase. I loved cabana #5 (red), The porch is mostly shaded. The water in the shower in cabana #6 (yellow) doesn't get hot, just warm. Cabana #7 (green) was just built last month and isn't quite finished - no WiFi yet and there isn't a binder with local info like the others have. This deck faces south and west, a nice place to sit in the sun and watch the sunset. All the beds were comfortable. (We were moved from the red cabana to the green one and our friends stayed in the yellow one). I didnt think the bugs were any worse around the cabanas at the back of the property like others had said. All of the staff are fantastic and Mara is a great tour guide (we could have used her the night we biked home in the dark!). If I ever find myself on Ambergris Caye again, this is where I will stay.

We Just returned from our third stay at Cocotal. This time it was a week with our family and a week of just the two of us. We rented all the cabanas for the family week, having the enitre resort to ourselves, our children and grandchildren. It was absolutley wonderful! We got married the first week and Ernesto and his staff did a masterful job with the preparations. Many of the decorations for the wedding and the onsite meals we had catered to Cocotal were made with flowers, palms, etc. from the resort. The meals were just want we wanted--tradtional Belizean fare. He arranged for tents, chairs and everything else we needed to have a perfect stay at Cocotal. There were 19 of us that stayed at Cocotal the first week and another 12 folks who joined us at Cocotal for the catered meals and wedding.
The rooms at Cocotal are lovely and spacious. They are very clean and up to date. Cocotal is private and very fairly priced. It is ideally located 2 miles north of San Pedro within walking distance of several fine restaurants. Activities abound on Ambergris Caye and Ernesto and his staff are always there to arrange what ever activity you choose.
We love Cocotal and will return next year. John and Brenda

Room Tip: We always stay in the beach front cabana. Very private, great view.

A small Inn located north of San Pedro.
The cabanas are comfortable, well equipped to prepare small meals, very clean.
Accessible by road ( a very bumpy dirt path ), water taxi or bicycle. Motorized Golf Carts can be rented through the office.
My favorite mode of transportation was the water taxi, which runs frequently up and down the coast. It is fast, efficient and reasonable. (And it does not have to constantly dodge potholes and large puddles of water).
WiFi at the cabana was sufficient and American TV is available.
Kayaks and bicycles are complementary, was not able to try out the kayak, because of tropical down pours. Did go for a swim, of the end of the boat landing.
The water is shallow, but deep enough for a nice refreshing swim.
My favorite spots in San Pedro are El Fogon Restaurant, Belize Chocolate Company, local fruit stands and a bakery south of town, near the Victoria House.
Snorkeling in the Marin Sanctuary is very nice and worth the entry fees, plus fees for the guide, who was very knowledgeable. The water is between 3 and 6 feet deep, deeper only in the channel going through reef to the ocean.
Light ocean currents make it easy to swim. The sea life is abundant, enjoyed seeing green turtles, different kind of sharks and rays.
Staying at Cocotal was very relaxing, several bars and restaurants are accessible by walking the dirt path along the beach. Being able to make fresh coffee and a light breakfast at the cabana made for a good start of the day.
( Several fruit stands in town sell fresh fruit, some markets sell plain locally made yoghurt and it is possible to find good coffee, shop around. The Green House has locally made Granola.)
I would highly recommend this little gem for the traveller visiting Ambergris Caye, Belize.
