Overall a positive view of this property.
First, the good. Beautiful resort locale (although I only saw the golf course and pool, didn't partake). Logical and compact layout of the core hotel property, which is a strong plus -- there is no reason to make the core far-flung just because the acreage is plentiful.
My room was gorgeous. Note, though I got what must have been a triple upgrade: convention rate standard room was the booking, and ended up top floor corner, huge room with huge bathroom and two balconies overlooking the golf course and fountain.
The service by people was very good. Efficient, pleasant check-in and check-out, good bell service at port cochere, good maid service, etc. One thing they do which is just spectacular is that if you don't pick up your wake-up call (I was in the shower) they send someone to your room to knock on the door and make sure you're up. Over the top awesome.
Technology service could stand to be better. Of 40 or so television channels on the 35" (or so) widescreen LCD, only 2 or 3 were actually in high definition, the rest were stretched or cropped standard def -- unacceptable in 2012 for a high-end property. The free in-room WiFi is your sole in-room broadband option, and was a mixed bag. Quite speedy when it worked, but dropped in and out frequently and was occasionally unavailable altogether; not at all suitable for doing work over VPN / Citrix, although just barely passable for streaming Netflix or HBO Go to your iPad, where the buffering can overcome most of the drops. (A one-hour show I had to reestablish connection and restart showing maybe only 2 or 3 times.) The worst thing on the tech front is that many places in the conference center have poor or no 3G signal and the hotel will provide conference center WiFi only for a fee of $75 (yes, seventy five) dollars per day. That is also simply unacceptable.
Room service was speedy and priced at or even a bit below the standard for a premier property. Did not eat in either of the hotel's restaurants. Hotel business center is spare to say the least, high charge and a slow connection, but does offer free boarding pass printing. Did not use the gym.
In terms of location, beware that Aventura is a long and expensive ($40-$60) cab ride to South Beach, downtown Miami, etc. If you're there for a conference or on-site or nearby resort and beach recreation or flying in and out of Fort Lauderdale, it's a great spot, but it's not particularly logical if you're flying in and out of Miami Int'l and going to be mostly doing things in Miami proper or South Beach.
