“Fun time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

This is not for everyone but if you have some interest in the past and a sense of adventure, Mark Rentz hosted us and a few others on the Peace River and guided us through our first fossil hunting experience. He was personable, extremely knowledgeable and maintained a very good sense of humor with our numerous questions. He treated us professionally and we could highly reccomend this trip if you like this sort of thing.

“A great adventure!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2012

While this is a delayed review, this is one of our more unique experiences. If you're looking for an easy-going, different kind of nature trip, this is for you.

Our journey started by meeting our guide Mark at a restaurant parking lot and following him to a nearby state park. At the park, we parked under nice shade trees and got in two person sit-on top kayaks for an easy paddle up the river. The river itself was scenic. We passed a small alligator along the way and the river was brown from the tree roots.

Once we got to our fossil hunting spot, we tied off our kayaks and jumped into waist deep water. We took turns digging in the river with a shovel and screening for fossils. We found all kinds of fossils from sharks teeth to dugong bones to horse teeth and part of a mammoth tooth. It was a great way to celebrate my partner's birthday and she came home with a box of her own fossil treasures.

Not only is Mark a fun guide, but he's also very knowledgeable and has written several books on Florida fossils. We had purchased one of his books in advance which helped us identify all of our finds when we got home.

If you fly to Florida for your expedition, you might want to consider taking a rolling carry-on bag and bubble wrap for your finds. You'll have a great time!

“Looking forward to doing it again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2011

This was a wonderful day spent kayaking and fossil hunting on the Peace River. Our guide Mark Renz is a gifted conversationist who though we as different as night and day I found a joy to talk to. Mark and his lovely wife run this business taking people to various sights on the peace river to look for fossils of sharks, and early mammals. In our four hours of digging we found over 400 shark teeth as well as assorted mammal bones tortoise shell pieces and a llama tooth. Mark is a good author and I have read several of his books. I give this my highest recommendation
