“Old USA”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

Stopped here on our way to Destin from south Florida. This is Inn is lovely. Very clean and comfortable. The staff on check-in was very friendly and helpful. They have a nice bar and restaurant. We ate in the bar as we really only wanted bar food after a 7 hour drive. The bar did close early around 10PM. My only complaint would be the breakfast. It is a continental breakfast....muffins, donuts, yogert etc. That really was not the problem but the people working it didn't seem to have a clue. Getting a HOT cup of tea was really an effort. The water they had in the caraffe was luke warm and when I asked them to microwave it you would think I was asking for something that would take longer than 1 min to do. It actually was kind of a joke as the people at the next table were also Tea drinkers and they had the same problem. The morning staff was unfriendly and just didn't seem like they wanted to be there. I would however stay here again if I am in the Area. The Inn was just so charming. I loved the front porch and the location to town (which is a throwback to old USA). And like I said it was clean and comfortable.

Very nice inn! This is where I got my first cat 16 years ago when I sat in one of the rocking chairs on the wrap around porch she jumped in my lap and I took her home. The inn is beautiful and the rocking chairs and swings on the porch adds a very nice touch. The only reason I did not give it a 4 was because some of the Staff acted like they were doing the guests a favor to let them stay there. New management there needs to teach their under 25 staffers how to be a little more polite.

Room Tip: All the rooms are nice but the suites are really nice.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Gibson, having decided that we'd rather experience the historical atmosphere of the town than stay in a more modern hotel. It was immaculate, quite lovely, and worth the minor inconvenience of lack of hairdryer, in room coffee, and counter space or desk. Parking is on the street, but we had no problem getting a spot very close to the room. Be aware that there is no elevator when deciding between 2nd vs 3rd floor room. Breakfast included juice, yogurt, fruit, and assorted baked goods. We were quite pleased, and I think the hotel is actually a great value.

We stayed at the Gibson Inn for 2 nights and absolutely loved our stay there! We were travelling with our 4-year-old son and the entire staff went out of their way to be friendly and welcoming. The lobby, bar and verandah areas were so relaxing and gave us a great chance to play board games, chat with other guests and staff, have a nice beer and watch the sunset, or just hang out. It was great to have this fun and lovely common area.

The Inn is an older, rambling building with tons of character. We found it to be in very good shape and lovingly restored. We chose a room with 1 Queen and 1 daybed on the 3rd floor... there are many larger rooms and many with their own verandah on the 2nd floor. Our room was very comfortable, tidy and suited our needs perfectly. We had no issues with hearing noise from other guests either.

This is not your typical hotel stay... don't expect massive sterile cookie-cutter rooms, elevators, indoor pools and full breakfast buffet... If that is what you're looking for, probably best to stay elsewhere.

But if you are looking for charm, history, comfort, southern hospitality, a social area where you actually get to converse with other travellers and locals, and a fantastic location right in town, then I think you will love this place.... we hope to come back someday and if we do, will definitely stay here again!

The town of Appalachicola is a real gem... full of neat stores, cafes, galleries and fantastic restaurants... all with striking preserved architecture... it is sleepy and non-commercial. The people are lovely.... a very special place.

Room Tip: There are all types and sizes of rooms.... most on the 2nd floor have a verandah, I believe. If you...

Recently spent two nights at Gibson Inn, room 308 with my wife. Our room was very nice, well decorated and spotlessly clean. The best part of this inn is the hospitality and friendliness of the staff. The staff at checkin, the bar, restaurant, and housekeeping were all extremely nice and made an effort to make our stay special.

We selected the Gibson Inn based on Trip Advisor reviews and we were happy we did. The Inn is charming and a bit of "old Florida" at its best. The staff is wonderful, particularly P.J and Sharon, for whom no request or question was a bother. The rooms are immaculate and just a little quirky. A light continental breakfast is available in the mornings. The on-site restaurant is terrific and the Inn's bar is a wonderful place to spend some time. Friday nights' Happy Hour is legendary in Apalachicola with a large crowd of guests and locals in the bar and out on the wrap around porch. We look forward to returning and we'll know the tricks of the trade....no elevator and no parking lot......just park on the street as close as you can get to the Inn. Enjoy!

This is a real cute place, the staff are lovely, the place quaint. Everybody talks to you. Friday happy hour, it's a buzzing place. Definitely worth a visit if you like different places. Would love to go back. Remember it is an old building, no lifts etc.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Gibson Inn is a fine example of Florida "Cracker" Architecture. This was the style of wood frame structure used widely in the 19th and early 20th century in Florida. These homes and businesses are characterized by metal roofs, raised floors, high ceilings, center hallways, and large wrap around porches. A widows walk and cupola crown the tin roof, all a reflection of the area's steamboat past. Built in 1907 of native heart pine and black cypress, the inn soon became known as a first class luxury hotel and was the only one between Pensacola and Jacksonville heated entirely by steam. Now listed on the National Historic Register of Historic Places. Many of the 30 guest rooms are uniquely appointed with authentic antique furnishings, cable TV, telephone, and wireless internet. Each guest room has its own full private bath. ... more   less
