I went to this restaurant on a Friday night. As you might imagine at a time when there are a lot of snow birds in the area, it was quite crowded. Despite that, the server, I think his name was Rocco, was pretty attentive. We had a child at the table and Rocco was responsive to a couple of special requests made by the guests we were with.
So why the bad overall rating? I ordered one of the specials - cobia oscar style. It was a pricey dish, but I expected it to be worth the price. Needless to say, it clearly was not. The fish was swimming in a broth - not sure but I am guessing a chicken broth. The crab and asparagus were totally soggy and not appealing to eat at all. Totally disappointed.
Thus, I told my wife we would never be back. So a funny thing happened the next night. We went to a friends' house for dinner and my friends had ordered a white chocolate cheese cake for pick up that night. I went with my friend to pick up the treat. The restaurant manager told my friend that the cheescake order could not be fulfilled because they do their baking on Thursdays. This raises a couple of questions. First, were they then not serving the white chocolate cheesecake for desert that evening (Saturday)? If they were, why not pull out a cake and hand it to my friend? They took his money for the order. Yes, they refunded the money but that is not the point. They took the order, they must have had this item in the restaurant and should have honored their commitment. Another question better be the advertised freshness of their deserts. If they stop baking on Thursday, you are clearly not getting a feshly prepared desert.
As a local to the area - northwest Bradenton - this was not my first visit to Sign of the Mermaid. In the past it has been good but not great. Given the prices, I suggest any one of a number of other restaurants on the island as alternatives.
