This is a lovely hotel with so much charm and it is located just 8 miles from Hartford. There are many stores and restaurants close by. There is a cozy fireplace in the lobby and complimentary coffee, Danish, and juice in the morning. The rooms have lovely four poster beds and period style furniture. The restaurant on site has terrific breakfast entrees. The only negative is that the parking lot is not well lit.

Room Tip: The first floor of the building on the hill is close to the restaurant and bar.

I spent three nights at this hotel and was impressed by the service. From the woman who set up our dinners each night to the bartenders near closing time, to the exceptional Shean behind the front desk, the service they rendered made my stay fun and luxurious. Thank you!

Room Tip: Ask for Shean.

I was a little worried about the stay based on some reviews, however, with a few exceptions, the stay was wonderful. Arrival - the front desk is on the lower level at the front entrance. This is where the "continental breakfast" is served (consisting of beverages, apples and oranges, and a variety of dry pastries). While a couple of the front desk staff were fantastic (Shean), some where less than helpful and bordered on rude.
Our rooms were located on the 2nd floor (from the lobby, but 1st floor in the back or restaurant entrance), just down from the Restaurant/bar. While the location was good in terms of proximity to parking and the main door, when Friday and Saturday rooled around, it was not so good. The hotel hosts weddings and receptions on what seems to be a regular basis. The staff in the bar do a good job of keeping things in check there, however, the parade of intoxicated guests traveling from rooms down our hall to the bar and back were loud and obnoxious on Saturday night. I'm sure it's not the norm, but annoying nonetheless. The rooms were nice, beds were very comfy and cozy. We had a double room and for my aunt and I, it was perfect, with a sink/vanity both inside and outside the bathroom. Overall, the rooms were charming.
The bar and restaurant were fantastic. The staff were attentive and friendly. Each night there was a different bartender and each one wanted to make an even better version of the drink we had the night before. One bartender even offered to buy us our drinks! The presentation of the appetizer in the dining room was beautiful, and tasty! Perhaps it was because we were eating late, but we each ordered a salad and baked potato, and the potato was dry looking, the "loaded" version consisted of cold cheese shreds on the potato and sour cream on the side. When we complained that the potato seemed cold or undercooked, we were told they had just come out of the oven. No amount of complaints got them taken off the bill despite not eating most of them.
The lobby on that level was gorgeous, well suited for weddings, and the decor and charm of the bar and restaurant were welcoming. The grounds were also beautiful as it was fall. One word of caution, plan to spend time looking for parking on a Saturday night if there is a wedding or two!
Other things: I poked my head into the gym, and while small, it had enough equipment to give a decent workout for a traveler, and there was a men's and women's shower in the gym. Also, the place is pet friendly. I definitely noticed a pet smell in the room occupied by my mom and her small dog, as opposed to our non-pet room, but it wasn't overwhelming.
I would definitely consider this hotel again.

Room Tip: The rooms in the hall to the left of the bar/restaurant are not the quietest on the weekends.

I have stayed here 3 times and have always loved the place. Old and quaint but it grows on you. You can spend time in the lobby around the fire, stay in one of the back wings with large corridors or even drive in and out to rooms in the front. Great service especially from Shean, One has to write a review when you see this kind of service!

Room Tip: Ask about the different wings and try and get something in the back

My husband and I stayed on a quick business trip, the room was clean and roomy and the bed very comfortable. I was disappointed that the restaurant was not open but they offered us the full menu in the bar. Our bartender/waitress was friendly and courteous and went out of her way to make us happy. Our meal was fresh and homemade and simply delightful.
