Our experience at this hotel was not great. Upon check in late in the evening the first room we were offered was just nasty - smelled musty and the carpet was wet. Yuck. Second room was smaller but OK; some furniture was soiled. Just as big a problem: the wifi did not work at all for our entire stay. There were also some noise issues (rowdy wedding partiers) that kept us up, although I can't blame that on the hotel. For what it is worth, we stayed in the annex part of the hotel and not the main inn, which may be much nicer.

I stayed recently for a 3-day business conference at the Avon Old Farms. The hotel seems to be one of the few luxurious independent hotels left in Greater Hartford and had the amenities that you can't find in chains locally - great character - large lobbies and public areas with art and antiques, a wonderful restaurant and bar overlooking an illuminated stream (sometimes with a piano player), a beautiful garden area with gazebo, outdoor chess set, arbors, etc, a large out door pool, and a large guest room and bathroom. The staff were well-trained and friendly and there were no long lines typical of understaffed chains. Room service was timely. The bed and down pillows were extremely comfortable and the room was spotless. The location was nearby our company and the hotel has several meeting rooms which we occasionally use. It is very quiet - situated at bottom of Avon Mountain - great stylish alternative to the chains.

Room Tip: The main hotel rooms are luxurious, the annex with exterior doors are a bargain price.

Our daughter's wedding was held there in June. We stayed two nights and were very comfortable. The staff handled the wedding flawlessly, no detail went unattended. The layout of the reception hall and grounds are such that the event was completely set apart from the hotel. We were completely satisfied with all aspects of the hotel stay and the event.

We stayed here for four nights as we are graduate students at Hartt School of Music. We got a discounted student rate, but were put in the "older" motel rooms, the 400 section. We were offered an upgrade for $20 per night, but decided to take the cheaper option. You get what you pay for... the older part is definitely in need of an upgrade. The motel part of it means that the door opens to the outside, and it's a separate building from the more formal and nicer hotel. I believe these are the rooms that allow dogs as well. The room was "clean", but smelled very musty. The decor was outdated. The couch and chair were stained. The bed was very uncomfortable. There were almost no outlets!! Travelers need plugs for their gadgets! All the plugs were behind the furniture or did not hold the chargers-they kept falling out of the sockets. The bathroom was fine. The free "continental breakfast" was lacking...a few danish and pastries. We did not use the pool, but took a walk up there and it looked nice. The restaurant (the Tap room) was outstanding though. The main hotel building is very nice.

This rambling hotel is at the base of Avon Mountain, actually a large ridge, at the edge of the suburban Farmington Valley outside Hartford. It consists of three connected red brick buildings of varying ages and is bordered by busy Route 44 on one side, busy state road 10 on another, and the wooded slope of the mountain on the other two sides. Sitting in the inn's restaurant (Seasons) or bar at the back of the hotel, you feel as if you're at a lodge in the forest. We ate in Seasons and the food was excellent. The inn hosts many wedding parties and some of the trees and the gazebo are outlined in tiny white lights. There is also a large outdoor pool.
Our room was in the newest wing which actually has a separate lobby in the grand style with a winding staircase accessing the two upper floors. There is also an elevator. The room was very large and comfortable with plenty of space to get settled and the bath was well appointed.
Now for the negatives. While the hotel offers a continental breakfast laid out on a bureau in the main lobby where the front desk is located, our building was a good distance away and we had to walk to that lobby to get our breakfast and bring it back to the room, as there is limited seating in the main lobby. I had to make two trips to do this on two of our three mornings in order to carry everything until the desk manager the third morning came over and took out a carrying box from a drawer in the bureau. Nobody told us about that nor did they say the sugar was in that same drawer. You had to ask. A sign there would help. Also, there is plenty of room in the newer lobby at our building to have a similar breakfast setup.
When we returned to our room the third day, our room key would not work because the locks had obviously been changed on our floor. It was sort of a surreal feeling. A staff member there told us they had been changed in our building that day. Nobody at the front desk had bothered to warn us about this.
Finally, this is minor, but when we checked into our second floor room there were two wasps flying around. I found that one of the windows did not shut tightly though the screen looked firmly closed. It just may indicate that our room had not been used in awhile.
Overall, this is a comfortable, attractive place to stay and its location was perfect for us as we were visiting old haunts in the Farmington Valley and Hartford and West Hartford. They just need to do something about the breakfast setup and train the front desk staff to be a bit more helpful.

Room Tip: A room toward the rear of the property facing the woods would be quieter. The rooms in the newer th...

The hotel did a great job hosting our Friday night dinner. The service and food was excellent.
Rooms were attractive and comfortable. The price for the rooms was appropriate and the staff very accommodating. The grounds were well maintained and the public areas appealing with original art throughout the hotel.
