We stayed at the Jerome during Thanksgiving and would adamantly suggest people look elsewhere! We had planned to spend the holiday relaxing, reading, and just enjoying the amenities of the hotel. Unfortunately, we were so disappointed, we were actually quite excited to checkout and return home. We’re typically not all that picky and can adjust to the occasional bobble; however, one issue after another kept piling up and eventually we were simply disgusted.
Hotel in General --
The decorum is old (not quaint; just old) and boring – no atmosphere to speak of. There was no heat – neither in our room nor in the J Bar where we had our first night’s meal. In fact, it was so cold in the restaurant that one of us went to our room to get coats. The waitress took our order and then came back several minutes later to take our order again – apparently having forgotten we were still there. Parking was an exhorbant $25/night. I realize Aspen is pricey, but the village was practically empty over Thanksgiving. We also partook in Thanksgiving dinner at the Jerome, which probably hit the low point. The meal turned out to be a buffet that cost more money than we have spent on any other meal in our lives. I kept thinking we could be having the same meal at Country Buffet for a tenth of the price. The restaurant tacked on an automatic 18% gratuity to the check for a BUFFET! Somehow I don’t think a $50 tip was quite worth serving water and picking up some plates – for two of us! We were in shock.
The Room --
Our room was certainly roomy, though the TV was tiny and so far away from the bed that you couldn’t actually watch it. The room was also lacking lighting, which left us carting a lamp around the room to read with. Happliy, we did have south facing windows which allowed the sun to heat the room during the day. Unfortunately, the windows also overlooked garbage cans and the windows of a local office building – where we watched the workers and they watched us. Wireless internet and a coffee pot in the room would have been wonderdul! Even Super 8 can at least provide room coffee – and usually wireless access. Service was decent, though it appeared many of employees were here on intenships from other parts of the world. The net effect was something akin to "Epcot" - instead of warm, cozy, and friendly.
To cap it off, we found some man’s underwear still in the room – apparently from the prior guest – and on our last evening, some strange bug walked across the floor. No doubt he was looking for the heat, too.
On the plus side, the Jerome is very close to the shopping district. If you’re looking to spend one night in Aspen to shop, you’re planning to eat outside the hotel, you don’t have a car, it’s warm and you’re not really planning to spend much time in the hotel, then you might consider spending the night. Otherwise, I would highly suggest you look elsewhere. We will never stay in the Jerome again – nor recommend it to any of our friends.
