It's obvious that Sky Hotel wants to be "hip" and trendy, but it tries WAY too hard. The whole place has a very unfriendly, intimidating feel, not because of the staff but because of the local Aspen hipsters that hang out there and give you the once-over when you walk by. I went there with my mom on my birthday for a relaxing mountain getaway and will NEVER go back. We went to the bar/lounge to grab a drink while waiting to check in, but they were playing techno music that made the place feel like a swanky martini/cocaine bar in Vegas - not an appropriate atmosphere for afternoon relaxation. The pool area turns into a frat party for rich people, blaring club music in the middle of the day. The hotel welcomes the public into the pool area, so good luck finding a place to sit amongst all the Prada bags and cowboy hats.
The room was the biggest let-down of all. It was nothing but a tiny Best Western caliber room with a bright coat of paint and animal print accessories. It looked like a cheap redecorating job from Trading Spaces. And since it was ski chalet style construction where the door and only window face an open air hallway, you have to keep the curtains shut at all times if you want any privacy. It was like staying in a dark, trendy cave.
The whole experience would have been funny if it had not been so overpriced. Fortunately, the manager understood our disappointment and comped us one of our two nights. If you are looking for a place to see and be seen, Sky Hotel is right up your alley. However, if quiet class is what you want, DO NOT stay at Sky Hotel.
