“Bait & Switch”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2009

Three months in advance I booked a cabin at L'auberge d'Aspen through Expedia. I booked a cabin specifically with a spa in the room. The day prior to us leaving on our trip to Aspen my wife called L'auberge to make sure all was accounted for and ready. She spoke to a lady at the front desk who assured her that we have one of the "big cabins" with a spa. My wife was told we were getting "the Victorian" cabin. Of course we were excited. When we arrived we were given a cabin called "the Alpine" which is a very basic, small (cramped) cabin with no spa. The fireplace was 'directly' at the foot of the bed - you dare not ever have a fire in it! When I complained I was told we could have a bigger cabin at a much higher rate. We could have stayed in a camper with a small space heater and had the same amount of room. Warning! Don't fall for the L'auberge d'Aspen "bait & switch". Never again for us. E-mail us if you need more information. atchent@yahoo.com Don't get ripped off like we did!

We won free last minute tickets to an event in downtown Aspen, and needed to find an inexpensive place to stay at the last second. We paid $63 for a basic cabin on Travelocity and couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised!

We arrived in Aspen after 8pm and easily spotted the cabins right on Main St. The location was ideal, just a short 6 or 7 block walk to downtown Aspen where everything was going on. Although the office was already closed for the night, they left an envelope with our name, keys, and directions to our cabin taped to the front door of the office. The cabin was spotless and had a great little kitchenette with fridge, stovetop, sink, microwave, coffee maker and even silverware / utensils. It also had a beautiful wood burning fireplace, with wood available to build a fire just outside near the hot tub.

We were a little sad to only have been staying for one night, as we really enjoyed our cabin. If you're looking for a good value right in Aspen, this is the place!

After we had called 3 or 4 other hotels with similar star rating and found out that we cannot afford them, we decided to stay in this hotel. It consists of several cabins, so the privacy is excellent. The rooms are clean, they have a small kitchenette with everything that you need there to prepare your own food. The bath tub has some pretty powerful jets. It is about 7-8 min walk from downtown Aspen. Would go there again in a heartbeat!

Okay, I'll agree with others that it maybe is smaller then you think based upon the photos if you stay in the basic, cheapest cabins. (We were in #12.) However, it is still larger then your average hotel room. They also have to fit more in the room then what you get in a standard hotel room, which has pros and cons... You do get a kitchenete with 1/2 fridge, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, two burners, plates/glases etc. You couldn't make a gourmet meal, but you could have a simple breakfast or lunch, which is nice if you're going to be there a few days and don't want to go out for every meal. The cabins don't look great on the outside, they're all painted different colors with a second color for trim, and I think they are in fact quite old. But, the interiors have been recently renovated, and while they may not be super high end, they are very nice, and quite cozy. The two things I am hoping they address before we stay there again- the queen mattress was not very good. It felt old and worn out, but I did feel okay after having slept on it one night. Secondly, the bathroom is quite nice, but the towels are incredibly cheap. Overall, I didn't feel like paying top dollar, and was very happy we were able to stay somewhere close to town for such a good price. It's not super luxurious, but it does have a certain charm and romance, and even my husband described it as cozy. We both agreed that we'd be happy to stay there again.

We stayed here September 8-11, 2009. Check in was simple. The rate was around $85 per night for a deluxe w/whirlpool tub. Rita is very quiet and the staff seemed to just let you have your space and not bother you. The cabin was very nice. It is not a 5 star hotel room but if you are looking for, and staying at a "cabin", then this is about as good as you will find. The location is on Main street but the traffic dies down at night and we had no problem sleeping. Everything in town was within walking distance(1/2 mile). We really enjoyed our stay here and would come back.

Room VERY clean, pleasantly decorated, good location. That's it!! Floor tiles in entry and bath were broken, grout missing, caulking around whirlpool tub loose and moldy, plaster in bath chipped, knobs on the cabinets missing, TV remote didn't work, bed loose and squeaked and woke us up every time we turned over! Glad we only paid $93 a night to stay in a place not as nice as our own home!

I was trying to find cheap enough cabin, so I went on Orbitz and that was the cheapest one. (That was in May, probably in winter it's much more expensive). Small, but very nice room with kitchen and appliances. Nice wooden furniture. Would stay again.
