“Charming and pleasant older house”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

Again, we selected this B&B for our two-day stay based on Trip Advisor reviews. First good thing was an upgrade to a king suite with no change in cost, so we had more space including a comfortable sofa for relaxing. Friendly reception on arrival - Linda gave us many good suggestions about the town and places to visit. The place is about 4 blocks away from the center of town (a pedestrian car-free mall) so we were encouraged to walk to town rather than drive. The room is equipped with phone and TV; the latter proved to be a bit of an aggravation because instruction for which of the two remotes to use was lacking and the next day we had to get the manager to get the TV working. The continental breakfast included hard boiled eggs and DIY waffles and had adequate seating at tables. The facility also had a hot tub which, unfortunately, we did not get to use because of rain. As in other B&Bs, bathroom shelving for convenient storage of personal items was lacking. Also, the shower operation was a bit unusual - instead of pulling up on a knob on the faucet, one has to pull down on a ring under the faucet.

Room Tip: Would recommend a king room and try to upgrade, particularly if staying more than one night.

I would definitely recommend the Mountain House Lodge in Aspen, Colorado. On the day my husband and I were supposed to arrive, we had flooding issues with our house. I called the lodge and spoke with Eric, who was very gracious and understanding of our situation. We explained we wanted to rebook, which we did for the following week, and were not charged a penalty fee.

We enjoyed a wonderful 2-night stay. Hosts Eric and Linda made us feel right at home. As the hotel was not full, upon learning we were celebrating our 28th anniversary, they upgraded our room. The room was clean, spacious and comfortable. A continental breakfast is included.

The Maroon Bells is about 10 miles away from the Lodge. We hiked up to Crater Lake amid beautiful yellow and gold aspens. We also enjoyed fine dining at Piñon’s Steakhouse downtown (within walking distance). I had the rib eye and my husband had pork tenderloin, and they both were excellent, though a little pricey. For dessert, the banana cream/nutella pie was delicious.

The location is close to everything you need to get to. We did not need to use our car and it was easier not to! The lodge needs to be updated, there was pieces missing from a cabinent in the bathroom, very hard bed. The staff was nice, but expensive for what you get (but it is Aspen).

We enjoyed a 2 night stay at Mountain House recently. Really enjoyed the excellent service and comfortable room. There is no air-conditioning so we opened our sliding glass door. The building across the street had some air-conditioning units on its roof running a lot and the sound was fairly noticeable. I was going to recommend requesting a room that doesn't face this street, however, I don't know the alternative. Might want to request a "quiet" room and discuss the options. Breakfast was good and plentiful. Great location to walk the town. One thing you will want to see and cannot walk to is Maroon Bells. You will drive to a parking lot and take a bus, but it is really a great outing and really spectacular. The hotel desk has lots of great info on all that is going on. Did I mention chocolates at the front desk...yum!

Room Tip: If the weather is warm, ask for a "quiet room."

We stayed there one night. The lodge is located in a residential neighborhood which makes it very quiet at night. No street noise. It is located about six blocks from the downtown action and it is an easy walk to all the restaurants and galleries. The breakfast was disappointing. It was the same fare you get when you stay at the Hampton Inn or F airfield Inn. Actually the Hampton Inn is better because they have hot entrees available. The Mountain House Lodge does not, except the waffle. The room was clean but needs work. The light on my side of the bed did not work. In fact the lighting in the room is minimal. There is a king size bed which left no room for a night stand. The staff was very friendly and helpful with local information. The mattress was as hard as a rock. Felt like I slept on a bench. There is no A/C to we had a noisy box fan instead. There is parking in the front and back of the lodge. Street parking is available for 2 hours but after 6pm you can park all night. So actually if you park after 4pm you're good for the night.

Room Tip: Ask for a room upstairs. Its more private. There is no elevator, however.

First, the good news: [1] the location is terrific - quiet residential [apartment/condo] neighborhood only a few blocks from downtown and very close to the entrance to a lovely paved walking trail that takes you a couple of miles along the river through a lovely park, past some lovely homes, and the John Denver park, ending up at the art museum and a few blocks from the historical museum. If you visit during the summer, take a break from downtown commercialization to enjoy this lovely walk! [2] The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful, notably Brian, the manager and genial host, who gave the place the feel of a friendly B&B. We might have missed the walking trail if Brian and Eric hadn't suggested it. [3] Our room was very clean. [4] The bed was comfortable. [5]The continental breakfast was acceptable and very convenient. If you're expecting a "typical" B&B breakfast [some kind of artery-clogging egg dish with sugary side dishes] you'll be disappointed, but we normally eat cereal, toast, and yogurt so we were happy with the selection. [They have waffles, too.]

On the other hand: our particular room was quite small [the patio door scraped against the edge of the bed when you opened it], the fiberboard armoire and wobbly table seemed more appropriate for college student housing than $200+/night lodging, and the ground-floor location by a walkway and bike rack made us uneasy about opening the window at night or leaving it open while we were out for the day. There's no air conditioning, but even on very hot days it was pleasantly cool at night, so you wouldn't need the AC if you're comfortable opening the window. Unfortunately, we weren't - so it was hot and stuffy in our room. I made our reservations through the corporate website and luckily arrived with the confirmation email in hand, since somehow that reservation hadn't made it to the Mountain House Lodge computer. I presume that's why we ended up in the room we had. Apparently that happened to a couple of other guests, too, so a follow-up call or email might be advisable, especially during peak tourist times.

It looked like parking could be a real challenge, but fortunately for us, we found an open spot on arrival and never had to move the car.

We would stay there again because of location, cleanliness, and staff, but would probably book directly [or reconfirm] and would ask for another room at the time of reservation.
