“Great hike to the base of Maroon Bells”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

Get to Maroon Bells early to take pictures and then start on your hike to Crater Lake through groves of Aspen trees. Round trip hike, including lots of picture taking was roughly 2.5 hours.

“Great hike to a serene lake!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

I accidentally reviewed this under Maroon Bells. But this is a wonderful hike! Take a picnic with you to sit by the lake and enjoy!

“A real workout, but worth it.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

My wife and sister did this hike twice. A real workout, bring layers, and gloves. Be wary of rain, so a poncho may be needed.

“Fantastic reward for little effort!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2013

Awesome easy to moderate hike through aspens, beautiful views to the lake. We drove up and started at about 7:30 (you need to get there before 9am if you have a car – otherwise you have to take the bus). It costs $10 to enter the park. It was well worth starting early as the trail gets very crowded (and we were there on a Monday). When you get to the lake, just sit and enjoy the beauty surrounding you – we spent at least an hour there. Many people continued further along the trail but when we asked, everyone agreed the most stunning scenery was right there at the lake. The trail is well maintained – it does have a lot of rock on the trail. We were back in town to enjoy a leisurely afternoon.

“Easy hike, but a bit rocky and sometimes muddy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2013

We've been having a lot of rain this summer so we did encounter some muddy spots on the trail. Yes, it is rocky, but that's pretty standard here in Colorado. We went early 8 ish while the skies were still blue and had a minimal amount of contrails, and no clouds forming yet. But in the short amount of time it took to hike the trail, contrails formed by the time we got to the lake. Steady stream of hikers but not bad. Some folks camp here which would be cool to catch the sunrise. Tip: you can drive up (skip the shuttle bus) if you get to the park before 9 am. Likewise, you can go in the evening and catch the sunset. Definitely worth it and doesn't take much time. Actually easier hike than Hanging Lake on 1-70. So if you've done Hanging Lake, this will be easy-pesy.
