“The Bates Motel was probably cleaner! (remember psycho?)”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2010

After reading all of the mixed reviews online and really wanting to support a local business vs a chain hotel, we decided to take a chance.

We had a late check in to which the man at the front desk was very accomodating and checked us in quickly. By the time we unloaded the car and were ready for bed it was extremely late. The first thing we noticed were the numerous, large spiders on the ceiling which indicated this room hadn't been cleaned in a while. It just got better from here. Much to our surprise, when we pulled the sheets back there were multiple pubic and head hairs, two live bugs and a rather large boot print half on the flat sheet and half on the fitted sheet. The once white towels were now grey in color, stained and freyed. We were both too exhausted to drive back to Alamosa in the rain to get a hotel room there, so we stayed in the room, fully dressed and slept on top of the bed (if you can call if sleep).

We decided to forego the shower the next morning and get out of the room as fast as daylight approached before the bugs started to stir.

Upon checkout the next morning I mentioned to the man who checked us in, that in an effort to support local businesses we had chosen his motel and explained to him what we had walked into the previous evening. No apology from him. I had asked him if he had ever looked at the hotel reviews online to see what people are writing and how the reviews would affect his business. Again, no response, just a verbalization of "oh".

This business obviously does not care about customer service or cleanliness and is apparently relying on people being desparate as they are driving through or its proximity to the awesome Cumbres & Toltec train (well worth the trip to Antonitio).

oh my Godddd. when i first saw the room, i thought it was a total joke. heavy smell in the air as soon as we opened the door. then i looked at the bed, there was a red blanket with holes( i guess eaten by moths) , the sheets and the piloowcases were almost grayish color from dirt and of course how can i forget the hair on the sheet. I am very very serious. Disgusting would be an understatement for the horrible shape of this place. We simple did not touch anything not to get infected and left this garbage place. The good news is, we found this hotel down the road that has been open for couple months now. It was a gorgeous boutique hotel in a historic building from 1911. Sadly, there was no website setup yet.but pleaseeeee make sure to stay there. CALL 719-376-5300 TO BOOK A BEAUTIFUL ROOM IN THIS BOUTIQUE HOTEL. AND PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS NARROW GAUGE INN OR WHATEVER ITS CALLED.

The summary above pretty much lists the good things about the place, although I would add the lady on the front desk was nice. The motel looks a right state externally but luckily the room was better. The room was clean but I found the shower head too low. Slept fine in the bed but I can generally sleep anywhere. I arrived late and left early which was a good thing as there is not much to do in the area - the adjacent restaurant is currently closed for refit but railroad staff seem to think it will be great when it reopens. I would stay again for the one night if I were to be catching the train but would arrive quite late in the evening.

My wife is a wheelchair user which she emphasised and booked two nights by phone.
On arrival we found we had been assigned a second floor room - no elevator. After about 15 minutes of pen and tippex we had been given a first floor one.
Very occasionally in the smaller motels we find that the doorway to the bathroom is too narrow - we find a way around it. This room (and all the others are identical evidently) also had an archway from the bedroom to the rest of the facilities which was also too narrow. My wife ended up washing out of the ice bucket. The heating was pathetic - it cooled down after 15 minutes and had to be switched off and on again - we slept half dressed.
There was a college reunion on in nearby Amarosa so we had no choice but to stay the first night; we managed to find a room in Amarosa the second night thank goodness.
I don't think the owners actually understood the problem - it was almost surreal - what on earth were they doing accepting our booking in the first place? They couldn't possibly have had any whellchair users staying their before.
I notice it says the average price is $43 - well we were charged $75 which is presumably the weekend rate. Even without our problems that is $40 too much!
So yes it is convenient for the train but do yourselves a favour; either start from the other end or stayover in Amarosa!

OK, so it doesn't have everything you might want in a hotel, but who cares? This motel is located right next to the C&TSRR. It's clean enough and at least my bed was perfectly comfortable. You get free internet in 30 minute periods, then you have to watch a commercial for another halfhour of free internet. This motel is a bargain!

The Narrow Gauge Inn is a very basic, family run motel. It is older but clean and one couldn't beat the location or the price. I didn't see any dead bugs...lol. I was unable to get the wifi network to operate but my laptop is quirky. Doughnuts and coffee in the morning. I thought the Dutch/Mexican restaurant in town was a riot!

The ritz-carlton it is not! But for the money, it was well worth it. located right next to the depot, the rooms were clean and the people were very friendly and informative.if you are a train buff, this is the side you need to see. the ride to osier is much more diverse and senic than the ride from chama. i very much enjoyed my stay and highly reccomend it!
