Owner description: Built in 1880 and little changed since, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is the finest and most spectacular example of steam era mountain railroading in North America. Its equipment, structures and vast landscape exist today as if frozen in the first half of the 20th century.

“More Than Worth The Effort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

Getting to this attraction in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico is more than worth the effort. Yes, the location is remote and cannot be reached quickly from Denver or Santa Fe, but we were sorry that we had not done it earlier. The train ride probably is the best in the US -- it is the longest and highest, climbing over 10,000 feet. The total trip takes a full day, but can be shortened to half-a-day. Take the time for the full day trip. Seating options range from luxury parlor car to standard coach seating. We chose the mid-range tourist class, which gave us a table and chairs with great views. The weather was great, the views spectacular and the ride with switchbacks, tunnels and bridges was thrilling.

“You just have to ride this....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2013

What a perfect day this is, nearly did not do it as thought it expensive but so glad we did it was worth every penny! The scenery is fantastic and gets better the higher you go(worth noting not to get too carried away with photos early on as it gets better!). Lunch is provided and the one way trip takes about 6.5 hours then a coach takes you back. You do have options on ding part of the trip but worth ding all of it.

“Wow ... You will not be Disappointed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

My wife and I decided to go in style so we spent the extra money to go with the PARLOR car and we felt that it was WELL WORTH the money for the experience. If you plan to do this train ride once, go for it in the parlor car. In the parlor car, you have a reserved comfortable chair with your own full window view. During the ride, you will be served by your one or two Parlor Car attendants. We had fresh fruit, fresh baked muffins, and then delicious rum cake in the afternoon. Hot and cold drinks are complimentary all day. Alcoholic drinks are served to you by the attendant for $5 a piece. You get complimentary mugs and travel bags as souvenirs in a parlor car seat. Parlor cars also have their own restroom and rear viewing platform only for guests in the Parlor Car. It is the last car in the train so you get the rear view to yourself outdoors. You also have the run of the train and can move to any other car including the open air flatbed car. The parlor car is only for adults and for the Parlor passengers only so it is a very calm and relaxed atmosphere. The meal in Osier was very good with plenty to eat and drink - you do not go away hungry (turkey or meatloaf are your 2 main choices with plenty of sides, salad bar, breads, soups, and desserts galore.) (MAIN RECOMMENDATION- If you leave from Antonito, reserve a seat on the left hand side of the car facing the engine - you get the most best views on the whole trip south. Leaving from Chama, sit on the right hand side facing the engine.) I would also purchase tickets ahead of time as the best seats go first)

“Outstanding scenic RR trip in NM and Colorado”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2013

This is a do not miss attraction--a great railroad ride through beautiful mountains, tunnels and valleys in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico--65 miles on a 1880 narrow gauge line. There are 3 types of RR cars from basic coach seating to a more luxurious car. We chose the middle level, the tourist car, where you have a small table and comfortable chairs that you can move to give you different views. You get free coffee, tea, soft drinks, donuts and other snacks. That car also has a rest room. The cost for the tourist car was $129 per person but there was an AARP discount.

We took the 10 AM trip from Antonito train depot where there is plenty of free parking. You get assigned seats but have the option to go outside to stand on the open air car for wider views. After a great ride of about 2 1/2 hours the train stops at Osier for an hour lunch, which is included in the fee. You have choices of either turkey or meatloaf platters (which are very large) or soup and salad bar. After lunch the train continues on to Chama for another 2 1/2 hours. There you take a comfortable bus trip of about one hour back to Antonito.

We highly recommend this wonderful trip--it is worth the money. The staff on the train and at lunch are very efficient and helpful. On our trip, on the open air car, during the first leg, there was a volunteer from the Friends of C and T who had a speaker system and provided excellent information about the history and workings of the RR and the sights around us--very helpful and educational.
