Jim's mom came to Colorado for a weekend of fun and adventure in the Rocky Mountain National Park. We've been to Estes Park before and while it's nice to visit once, it's just way over run with tourists, in our opinion, to be enjoyable.
Allenspark is the perfect spot to relax in the mountains. It's about 15 minutes from Estes Park if you need to pick up some supplies or catch a whitewater rafting shuttle, and it's a mile or two from a couple different trail heads in RMNP.
Meeker Park Lodge has been run by the same family since 1922. We stayed in the Robin cabin, at the end of the property near the horse stables. It was a great spot because we couldn't see the other cabins and had views of mountains in two different directions.
We stopped by a few weeks before to check it out. While we were in the main lodge there were a couple other guests promoting the lodge to us! One woman from Florida has come back several times which was comforting for us to hear and now we see why.
The cabins are mountain cabins, rustic, charming, not well insulated (we could see day light through the walls). But it was surprisingly clean considering the age and being a mountain lodge. Kitchen was stocked with everything we needed for the weekend, we used the grill every day, and enjoyed a cozy fire in the fireplace with our morning coffee.
The only reason I didn't give it five stars is it does sit right on Hwy 7 and you do hear road noise. It didn't detract from our stay as we were usually gone during the day and morning/evening traffic was minimal.
We would definitely recommend!
