“Cinnamon bear!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2012

This was our second rail excursion from Alamosa to LaVeta and the new management has really added so much to the experience & increased the level of service since our first trip 2 summers ago. Our car host, Eve, was simply sensational and added to our enjoyment of the trip immeasurably. Adding a dining car to the consist says volumes about their interest in creating a fabulous train experience for all passengers. Along the way we were treated to a bear sighting between the tunnels on the way to LaVeta! Thanks for the heads up, Eve! The scenery is absolutely gorgeous and there was even a lightning & thunderstorm to add to the memorable day,
To bring a pert near perfect day to a close we were treated to a musical performance by Fred Hargrove who's pretty famous 'round these parts in his own right. Fred is charming, delightful and one heck of a singer & songwriter.
It's easy to understand how this is rated Alamosa's #1 thing to do. Can't wait to come back to a place we felt so welcome.

We are so glad to hear that you had a great time on the excursion! We are very excited about the addition of the dining car as well. It was very important to us to have a consistent look on the train and we finally have a dining car to match!
The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad has worked very hard to provide a product that is unique, affordable and entertaining and the dedicated staff in Alamosa really delivers. We hope to welcome you aboard again in the future!

“Not as good as the Ads”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2012

The crew and service personnel were excellent, can't say enough about them, BUT the scenery was lacking and doesn't measure up to the hype of the videos, pictures and advertisements.
We took the more expensive accomodations, there were problems with one of the cars that caused a 2 hour delay and they gave away most of the continental breakfast we paid for before the train finally left. Then they crowded the 1st class car with people from the #2 car till later in the trip. All in all it was poor planning and no compensation for the loss of service we incurred.

Hi Bill -
I'm sorry to hear our equipment malfunction gave you a negative memory of our wonderful Scenic Train Ride. We have to consider safety first and foremost when operating these trains. Moving passengers from the coach car into other cars was our only option to get the excursion underway. Refunds or reschedules were offered to all but from your review, you may not have heard. We, of course, would still extend that offer to you as some did take advantage.
As for our scenery, I'm quite surprised to hear you were not impressed. All of the advertising we put out is filled with photos and video taken directly from our train route and nowhere else. Perhaps you'd find another time of year to be more suitable? You're welcome to come back and see.
These incidents are not typical of our railroad as you can see from other reviews so I do hope you'll ride again! You may contact our reservation center if you're still interested in the refund or reschedule for this date. 877-726-7245.

“Great Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2012

This was a beautiful trip that I highly recommend. It passes through some spectacular scenery with countless photo opportunities. The open air car provides a better perspective to enjoy the views than the coach cars, but the seating in the open air car is hard wooden benches. The club car was quite luxurious and offers food and bar service. There are several options of various excursions, both full-day and half-day. The morning train from Alamosa to La Veta is steam-powered during the summer and is a thrill to see and hear. Diesel service goes the opposite direction from La Veta to Alamosa in the morning and returns in the afternoon. The staff was extremely friendly and quite knowledgeable, offering many interesting narratives as we passed by historic and scenic spots along the route. Armando was extremely friendly and made a point to spend time with all the passengers in his car(s) and get to know them. For a young man, he has a wealth of knowledge about the train and the area.

My only complaint was that the open air car was $10 per ticket more than coach, yet passengers in coach had free rein to use the open air cars at their leisure. If the train is full, I'm sure this isn't the case, but when there are fewer passengers, there seems to be no reason to pay the extra $10 as you can use the car anyway.

Overall, it was a great experience and I do highly recommend making the trip. You won't be disappointed!

“Wonderful trip.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2012

There are multiple ways you can ride, but the "dome car" is the best. Food is good and reasonably priced, entertainment fun, and staff very professional. The views are great, bring your camera, and enjoy not only great scenery but the wild life too.

“Book the "Dome" Car.. Amazing Views, Fun Ride, Beautiful Train!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 29, 2012

You will love your experience on the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad! From the time you board until the time you return to the station, you'll not only enjoy the exciting train ride, but also be treated to amazing scenery with views that calendars are made of!

The train staff - all of them - are professional, courteous and fun. They make the trip much more than just a train ride, rather an experience. We were greeted with smiles from the minute we picked up our tickets at the station. The on-board car managers and staff made sure your every need is taken care of, from serving food to just sitting and chatting with you, they're a great bunch of friendly people.

The food was great, from burgers to salads to wraps (we went during lunch hours), it was all tasty and served in a timely manner. They also have an assortment of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic and check on you several times to make sure you're happy.

The mountains still had snow and the peaks were bright white with the blue Colorado sky, just breathtaking! You'll probably see some pretty cool wildlife along the ride too! On the way back, we were entertained by a folk singer who encouraged us to join in and we all sang along as we rode right into the sunset. A must for those who are looking for something different and fun to experience!
