“Excellent scenic and informative train ride”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2011

The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad is excellent. Ryan, the tour guide, beverage server, comedian and toilette cleaner on our car was great! Be sure to ask for Ryan's car. Ryan was very informative. Ryan knows the area and the history of the area. If you are into hee-haw jokes, Ryan is the King!

The ride is very scenic. You are encouraged to visit the various cars on the train. The open air car was a real treat.

There is a 45 minute stop in La Veta, CO. That is just enough time to visit the shops and to get your hand dipped ice cream in a waffle cone at Charlie's Market. You may want to head straight to Charlie's Market as the line for the ice cream gets really long.

They have a dining car on the train. The food was excellent. Way above what you would expect. And the prices are very reasonable. Most of the dinners are just under $10. The sodas, coffee, tea and hot chocolate were only $1.

What a great way to spend a day. GO!!!

“Nice way to spend the day with family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2011

We rode the Winter Wonderland Express round trip from Alamosa to La Veta. I enjoyed this ride with my husband and two younger kids (ages 9 and 11). The train ride was basically a full day ride from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm. The train provided live music performances. On the way to La Veta, there was a mariachi group and on the way back way there was a country/western singer. We ate lunch on board the train and hung out in the club car area. Allyn, the club car manager was wonderful and made us feel very comfortable during our ride. The rest of the staff were also very friendly and helpful. Although the scenery is beautiful during the winter time in between Ft. Garland and La Veta, I would love to go during the summer when everything is green.

“Train ride is great but help needs addressed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2010

My husband and I road to the Fur concert and had two friends with us who also enjoyed the ride but the help miss informed my husband and friend that they could scrap metal the next day and was given bad advice by one of the employees (Jerry Ortega) Who also smelled like alcohol and admitted to drinking when we saw him and his wife the day of the train ride. He got my husband and friend arrested and wouldn't admit that a mistake had been made even though he did tell them they could scrap from a old scrap metal junk pile now they will have to go to court with the lies and misadvice of an Employee so be careful of tresspassing charges if you do ride the train and make sure you get good quality advice from the employees! We are fighting this claim and everything was put back by advice of the law?!

“great ride and good La Veta food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2010

We rode from Ft. Garland to La Veta on a beautiful day...Dome cars are beautiful, and coffee was good..Saw three bears and a herd of elk, very scenic indeed. We arrived in La Veta and ate at the cutest place, the Whistle Stop, right by the train..infact you have to walk around the train...Delicious smoked meats and outdoor picnic area, no sitting in a dark restaraunt. The steam engine goes all around you because it is the turn around, fun, fun, fun.
