“Rodeway Inn - The Direct Way to the Heart”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2010

After a long journey my partner and I was worried weather we are going to the right hotel or not...but after entering the hotel and having the warm wel come by the manager we were really happy. We preffered to see the room first before having it....and we found it very clean and having a nice poolview from the window..we stayed there for two days and really appretiate the service of the staff and free continental breakfast...So that rodeway in was a real way to the heart for us

We choose this hotel due to the closeness to a business my son's band was playing at in Azusa. The following are problems we encountered at this hotel:

The Key cards did not work properly. We fought for 5 minutes and went to the front desk. They said try again - which we did. We still couldn't get the door open. My husband went back down to the front desk and a young man fiddled with it and it opened. Subsequently, every time we tried to open the door it was a battle.

Bathroom: The outside door was dirty (looked like squashed bugs). The toilet lid was cracked & scratched. Every time we flushed the toilet it would continue to run. I had to lift the top lid and push on a part to get it to stop running. The ceiling fan did not work. There was no stopper in sink. Your bathroom amenities included 2 bars of soap and 1 small bottle of shampoo/conditioner.

Room: There was a cigarette burn on one of the bedspreads (this was a non-smoking room. There was dust, dirt, and foreign objects all along the edge of carpet/baseboards. The refrigerator made strange noises occasionally.

TV: There was no TV guide. We called the front desk at 1:45 PM on 03/27 to complain the TV reception was terrible. We were told they would20send someone up to fix it. I went to the front desk at 3:00 PM. I was told by the desk clerk who I had trouble understanding and I'm certain didn't understand me that someone would be up to check out the TV. At 3:55 PM, the front desk called to say the handyman wasn't there and wouldn't be in until 03/28. They asked us if we wanted to change rooms. By this time, we were settled and getting ready to go out for dinner, so we declined.

Continental Breakfast: My husband went at approximately 9:30 AM on 03/28 to get something to bring back to the room. All he saw were stale looking pastries, cold cereal, juice and long standing milk. I need to note that my husband is a diabetic and is supposed to limit his sugar intake. We were hoping for a fresh breakfast with fruit, bagels, oatmeal, etc. Needless to say we did not consume any of the product you displayed.

My birthday was 03/28 and I was hoping for a little relaxation and comfort. I did not get that sense at your hotel. It would be nice if the staff was educated on the English language as it is quite frustrating trying to communicate. In the past, I have stayed at Comfort Suites and Quality Inn and have been completely satisfied. We even stayed at a Motel 6 recently and it shined compared to this Rodeway Inn.

Since that time, we made few improvements to the building and specially the bedding system/spacious-remodeled bathroom. We welcome you back again with a special rate, please call in first. We apologize for the unpleasant surprises that may-have, to a certain degree misplaced your travel plans.

My wife and I, a couple in our 70’s, stayed at the motel on Mon/Tue, 11/12 Aug, ’08. Reservations were made on-line through the company website for a ground floor, queen bed, non-smoking handicapped room with fridge/ microwave, coffee maker as shown on the website.

On arrival at the motel it was determined that the motel has none of what was reserved. There are no queen bed handicapped rooms and, in fact, there are no outfitted handicapped rooms of any kind. The room also lacked an ironing board, a radio, a hair dryer oand alarm clock. The rooms, at this time, do not even have facial tissue in them and the telephones do not work in any of the rooms.

We were given a king bed non smoking room with a fridge on the ground floor, the only operative room on the ground floor.

The motel, the former Western (not Best Western) Motel, is located on the NE side of First St. near Azusa Ave. and is next to a 24 hour Arco AM/PM and a 24 hour Jack-in-the-Box. Our room was on the SW corner of the motel facing and siding onto the parking lot/driveway which is used as a shortcut by restaurant patrons and from an alley access from the next block. Heavy traffic and noise was constant throughout the night.

The motel is in the process of a remodel which progresses slowly and is dependent on cash flow. There were only three guests staying at the motel while we were there which seems to say that the renovation will take a long time.

Your stay is paid for in full at the time of check-in and at that time you receive the TV remote and the code to access the high speed Internet.

We found the remodeled room to be clean and without odor. It had clean carpet, fresh paint, new furniture and new draperies and curtains. It was furnished with a dresser/mirror; two end tables and a small table with two chairs. The bed was clean and comfortable although fitted with worn linen. The room had no closet shelf, clothes rod or baggage rest. The room was located near the side panic door exit.

The bath and vanity area are combined and definitely not to standard. There is no toilet paper holder and no towel rack near the sink. There is no vanity and no table on which to place toiletries, etc. The bathroom was clean and without odor.

Water pressure and drainige were good.

The room refrigerator worked well, as did the A/C and the TV. All lighting and wall plugs worked well but the light above the work table and chairs depended on a pull cord which was not there.

The company website also promised “we serve a fresh Complimentary Continental Breakfast daily” but what was served were some packaged fresh from the fridge packaged Svenhards Mini Coffee Cakes and muffins
where they had been kept from the day before and one thermous of coffee. There were no napkins or paper plates from which to eat the items.

The side door is usually propped open by a rock placed there by a guest who wishes to use this instead of the main entrance. The front door remains open, not just unlocked, but open all night and there are no motel personnel on duty. Access to the entire motel is open to all from the street.

The pool and spa were clean and attractive as were the landscaped grounds.

Management, who lives on property, was very friendly and accommodating and assisted in a minor medical equipment problem we encountered during our stay.

Very good access to the Interstate is this motel’s strong point but lack of amenities, poorly outfitted rooms, malfunctioning telephones, a shoddy breakfast offering, a complete lack of security and the very high traffic and noisy parking lot are the reasons I would not recommend this place.

  • Liked — Close to Interstate
  • Disliked — Lack of security; noise/traffic, poorly outfitted rooms & lack of amenities, shabby breakfast

We have made some improvements to the building and have new bedding system. We apologize for our lack of urgency to correct what we have caused you, though we welcome you back again with special offer. Due to the fact we have disappointed you. Please visit us again to see the improvements in rooms, our free continental breakfast, and our service.
(Continental breakfast does not offer meat or warm food. It's a starter, Danish, muffins, two types of cereal, Orange juice, Milk Donuts and fresh coffee. Management face the dilemma of guest expecting warm food and sausage on croissant.)

This hotel is a good deal for the one night stay as well as short extended stays. The rooms are large and clean with daily maid service who do an excellent job keeping the rooms clean. Furnishings are standard for these types of hotels. A bit dated and worn, but clean and functional. The beds are firm but still comfortable. In room television with basic cable and HBO, a fridge and microwave and a desk or table and chairs as well as a full size sofa are all included in the rooms. The hotel offers an elevator for those with disabilities such as myself. The pool and hot tub are kept in sparkling condition and the hotel staff / management is right there for you if you need anything. Freeway access couldn't be simpler as the on / off ramps of the major freeway are right across the street. The hotel is also located a mile away from San Gabriel canyon which gives you instant access to hiking, backpacking and quick access to local ski areas like Mt Baldy and the Angeles National Forest. The rooms also feature balconies which are nice as you don't feel confined to a stuffy room like with some discount hotels.

Pros: Large rooms, nice views out of some rooms, pool and hot tub, comfortable and functional furnishings, clean environment, elevator access to upper floors, security cameras throughout, helpful staff / management, excellent prices for the area. Easy freeway access, fast food and mini markets within 1 block, traditional restaurants within a mile.

Cons: Continental breakfast leaves a lot to be desired. Coffee, sugar rolls and orange juice are your choices currently. The hotel is in a high auto traffic area, which means if you are on the street / freeway facing side of the hotel, that you are going to get a lot of street noise. Also (of no fault to the hotel), the local fast food restaurant is open 24 hours and it tends to be loud at night with inconsiderate patrons of the fast food establishment blasting car radios. That can disturb a good nights rest. I've been here for eight days now and half of those have involved being woken up due to loud music from the fast food drive through.

Overall a decent place to stay, especially if you are on a budget. It's clean, easily accessed and close to food, gas, freeways and recreation

  • Liked — Room size, staff, condition of rooms, freeway access
  • Disliked — traffic / community noise levels
