“What a Find!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2014

My wife and I had visited Pismo on a previous occasion and, while venturing about, found the Avila la Fonda and decided to stay there during our next trip.

Booking the trip using their website was very easy, and they offer a 20% discount to Costco members.

When we arrived, we were given the typical orientation of the property. But then the desk clerk also told us about the complimentary services and amenities offered by the hotel: the afternoon nacho bar, wine and hors d'ourves, and evening desert. The snacks were a welcome respite from a long day.

The hotel also offers both a welcome and a departure gift, and has a library of both books and dvds with which to spend one's evening.

The staff was exceptionally friendly and the noise level from neighboring rooms was practically non-existent (not sure if that was because the walls were that good or because we just had quiet neighbors).

We have already booked another stay for November. :0)

Room Tip: The Great Rooms have queen-sized Murphy bed. A bit snug in there, but it does have the kitchenette.

Avila La Fonda is a little boutique hotel tucked in the beach community of Avila Beach, California. I happened to stay here overnight during graduation weekend at the nearby Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, when hotels in this town and in the surrounding areas jack up their prices in response to the demand. I paid double the normal rate, which was why I did NOT give this place an excellent rating. It just cost too much. Other than that, everything else was great. My husband and I arrived just in time for their afternoon reception. We did not stay for that, though, because we had an appointment to keep. Later in the evening, different kinds of pies were served with coffee, tea and ice cream. We particularly liked the Olallieberry pie. Delicious!

We had a spa in our room right next to the king-sized bed. Although I prefer tubs to be inside bathrooms instead of bedrooms, the tub's location did not bother me. The hotel also had a collection of DVD's you could borrow should you feel like it. Another guest told me there was a fitness room, but I did not have the time to try it out. There was a complimentary basket of snacks in our room, and just outside there was a room full of other snacks you could purchase at cost. There was no attendant - purchases I guess were on an "honor" system.

In the morning, we woke to the smell of freshly-baked croissants. Fresh fruit was also available with orange juice, coffee and tea. You would not go hungry in this hotel.

What set this hotel apart from the rest is the wonderful staff. They make you feel as if you were in someone's home. They were quite helpful too in letting people know what's available, and what's good to visit around Avila Beach.

This hotel is only a block and a half from the beach. People have told me that they've seen whales and dolphins in the ocean, but I never saw any while I was there. The underground parking in this hotel if convenient for guests because parking is rather hard to find close to the beach.

I loved it here! I normally stay at either the Embassy Suites or at the Marriott at the nearby San Luis Obispo because of the points I can accumulate, but now that we've discovered Avila La Fonda, I would probably stay here next time we're in the area. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

The superlatives have already been said so many times before about Avila La Fonda Hotel, should they be said again? Of course!!! This little hotel - the property, the people, the service, the special way they take care of you and trust you - is fantastic

Everything is decorated in a clever Spanish motiff, with each room similar but uniquely different. Some have balconies, some don't; some sleep more guests, some less. But each room is designed for comfort and simple luxury from the cotton robes to the cedar chests, from the king beds to the Blue Ray players connected to 42 inch flat screens.

The included extras: wake up and come down to fresh coffee and croissants; come back at lunch for nachos; return at dinner for wine, cheese and meats; and sneak down late night for fresh baked pie and ice cream.

But best of all...the staff: they are truly kind, fun and caring. Everyone who works here...Chris the GM, Zack who works the overnight shift, and Mathew who whips up the food, and all the other staff...are incredibly nice, friendly and helpful.

I have one slight nit for an otherwise perfect hotel: the mattresses in many of the rooms are tired and beat down; we went to 5 different rooms before we found a firm one. If you need a firm bed; say so when you book and again when you check in. Note to management: time to change out the mattresses.

Visiting anywhere within 25 miles of SLO, you simply MUST stay here! Avila La Fonda Hotel is truly a special gem! You will love it!!!!

Room Tip: If you need a firm bed, ask for it.

Our spa room with rose pedals and cider was everything I asked for and more! It was nice relax and romantic stay middle of our drive from Frisco to L.A. Matt and Mike were truly nice and the amenities (peach pie, wine etc) was the cherry on top. I strongly recommend this hotel if you ever visit Avila Beach or surroundings.

This is our seventh time staying here and it just gets better each time. The staff are friendly and helpful. The manager helped us find the perfect room for us. We loved the location just a block from the ocean. They offer snacks through out the day with wine tasting at night. The pie in the evening is served warm with ice cream. Come early it goes fast. I almost hate recommending this place because I love it so much I don't want it to fill up.

April 25, 2014 was our first, and definitely not our last, stay at Avila La Fonda.

Avila La Fonda is a small hotel, which has the feel of a bed and breakfast. It is located only one block from Front Street, which is the center of town. This is where you will find many restaurants, shopping, as well as beach and pier access.

The minute you walk through the doors of the charming Old Mexican entryway of Avila La Fonda, one is warmly greeted by a staff member who makes you feel like a family member returning home. This feeling remains throughout your stay at Avila La Fonda.

The rooms at Avila La Fonda are large and comfortable, and has a large Jacuzzi tub to enjoy after an exciting day exploring Avila Beach and surrounding areas (San Luis Obispo and Pismo Beach are only a 10 to 15 minute drive in either direction).

It seemed like no matter what time of day, never-ending snacks are available for guests in the quaint sitting room just inside the entry of the hotel. Freshly baked cookies, fruit, coffee and tea is available 24-7. Additionally, at about 3:00 p.m, they have a hosted happy hour with more snacks for the guests. Then around 5:00 p.m., they offer a variety of appetizers before you head out for dinner. If you return to the hotel around 8:00 p.m., you will be treated to freshly baked pies with ice cream for dessert. In the morning, they have freshly baked croissants and fruit for a quick bite before you head out for the day.

Another perk is the underground parking provided by the Hotel. Parking is very limited on the streets of Avila Beach -- especially during the Summer.

Avila La Fonda does not have a fitness room, but we did enjoy walking the hilly streets of Avila, which allowed us to enjoy the breathtaking view of the bay and surrounding areas. There are a number of piers within the bay. During one of our walks, we went to the end of the pier closest to the hotel and were fortunate to catch a sighting of a mother whale with two calves in the distance!

We were sad to leave our new family, but hope to return to our home away from home for another enjoyable visit in the very near future.

We were here for a several nights in late 2013.

Our hosts, Fred, Angela, Morgan, and Matt, are pleasant and engaging. We met Mike, one of the owners. He was gracious as well.

This Hotel is in town. It was built about 7 years ago. It is personable like a bed and breakfast ( which is good) and they feed you various food bites about four times a day if you wish to indulge. Wine is offered in the evening. Apples and tangerines are always available.

The place itself is very colorful and bright. 28 rooms. Don't look for a workout room, you won't find one. Go outside and walk or jog the town and the various piers. The town offers wine tasting shops and various art and craft shops and of course the beach, which is a minute walk from la Fonda. We had lunch at the Custom House at the pier. Very good.

$200 and up per night. Rooms are well appointed, and offer many other free amenities. Fireplace and very large tub with jets in our room. Outside, there is no property to walk around in, but as mentioned before, you have the whole town.

San Luis Obispo is only 7 miles north. There we had lunch at Novo, and dinner at Ciopinot. Both excellent. Novo has a creek running by it.

We paid homage and each had a bowl of pea soup at Anderson's on the way up.

Yes, we did make the obligatory stop at the Madonna Inn, and had a pomegranate vodka to which they add pineapple juice, to match the pink decor.

The Mission (the church) at S.L.O. was interesting.

Room Tip: Ask for the room(s) with the very large sunken tub with jets.
