“Overall a nice stay at the Avila Lighthouse Suites”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2008

Stayed for 3 nights at the Avila Lighthouse Suites - myself and my four children. Overall, the experience was positive. The hotel was clean and the room was spacious. I particularly like having a separate sitting area - and there was a TV in both the bedroom and sitting area which was great. We were on the 2nd floor and had a view of the pool and the ocean. The beach is right across from the hotel which is very convenient. The pool was nice - and decent size. We also enjoyed the hot tub. In addition, you can rent bikes at the hotel for a nice ride on the local bike trail. The kids particularly enjoyed this. I can imagine in the summer, it would be loud as the rooms surround the pool area and sports deck so during busy times, it probably wouldn't be that quiet - especially if you're room was too close to the pool/sports deck. It was quiet when we were there so this was not a problem for us. My kids also loved the sports deck with mini-golf, chess and ping pong. Again, could imagine these things being "occupied" during a busy period.

The cons - the sofa bed. Another review mentioned it and they were right on - the mattress was HORRIBLE! My kids complained about it and they don't complain about much. So, that was a major problem for us - as somebody needed to make use of the sofa bed and it became a battle over who was going to sleep there. We did have one rude staff person check us in - she wasn't overly rude, but not friendly either. Everyone else we encountered on the staff was extremely helpful.

There is not much to do in Avila Beach - however, we knew that and planned other activities in nearby areas - everything is pretty close - we spent a day in SLO, a day in Pismo, a day in Morro Bay and a day in Avila. We did eat dinner one night in Avila at the Custom House which was good and kid friendly. A bit expensive - but not outrageous. We also did room service one night - which was through the Custom House. It was just fine for us. The other night, we ate in Pismo at Rosa's - which is yummy. It's only a 10 minute drive to Pismo where there are more activities and food options - but I found Avila a nicer place to stay than Pismo because I like the quiet and Pismo looked a bit "run down" to me. The Avila Suites are fairly new - and I like that. Most of the things that are there are also pretty new and clean!

Oh yeah, I got a great rate through expedia. $140ish a night! Which was really a bargain for what we had I think. We'd stay there again.

I've been reading some of the comments regarding this ocean front getaway and can't believe what it takes to please some people. We rented an ocean front ground floor suite for $235 a night and found it to be PERFECT! There wasn't air conditioning, but none was needed in AUGUST because of the ocean breeze. Our room opened to a quaint deck with two lounge chairs and a table. The sidewalk is just after the deck's landscaping and the beach is literally across the narrow street outside of our room. With the windows open at night, we could hear the waves rolling in during the night. The Custom House, a restaurant a few doors from the complex serves the greatest clam chowder we've ever tasted, bar none. For those complaining about carrying their luggage up a few stairs (the 2nd floor is not very high above ground level), perhaps they should consider staying in a big city hotel overlooking a brick wall or the interstate cloverleafs. Give this place a chance and you won't regret it. Rent the bicycle carts, walk on the warf, lay on the beach and enjoy. It's a real bargain for an ocean front room in mid California. Free continental breakfast with a generous offering and great coffee!

We had an excellent rate thru AAA and felt
the 2 room suite was a great value and so
comfortable! They have thought of everything!
Location is spectacular - overlooking
the gorgeous beach. Excellent breakfast.
We've stayed in Pismo Beach and Morro Bay
many many times enroute from Northern to Southern
California and this is now our new favorite stop!

It looks great in the photos, but the price is way too high for the lack of comfort and convenience.

We stayed at Avila Lighthouse over the Thanksgiving week. The first night we were there, I tried to take a shower and the hot water wouldn't go on. The next morning, it still wouldn't work, so they had us wait for the repair person to come take a look. After an hour, he said it would be another hour to finish the job. They gave us a key to another room and we had to lug our stuff to a room, shower and come back. We were late getting to where we had to go that day.

The second morning, we went to turn on the shower and this time there was no water at all. Again we had to wait for something to be repaired and again we were late for where we had to go.

The sofa bed mattress was just dreadful. It was so thin that you could feel the springs below. Our poor kids couldn’t sleep at night. We tried putting the mattress on the floor, but it was still terribly uncomfortable.

When we checked out, I asked to talk to a manager to see if we could get a discount on the rate considering all the hassle. There was NO manager. The manager was on vacation. I left a message to be contacted, but of course, I got no phone call.

In addition to the plumbing hassles, we also found it very hard to find any reasonable place to eat. There were very few places to eat and they were very expensive (NOT kid friendly). The only reasonable restaurant closed at 6pm! That left us to get take-out pizza many nights. And that got old.

Next time, we'll book in Pismo. Avila is just too small. You are a captive audience and they take full advantage of that.

  • Liked — The pool
  • Disliked — The poor plumbing, bad matress and the VERY poor selection of nearby restaurants. You basically have to drive into SLO to eat.

We stayed new year's weekend, in a 2nd floor oceanfront suite. After reading some of the mixed reviews, we were hesitant, but on arrival we
found the reservation staff pleasant and the suite was spacious, immaculately clean and wonderful. The suites have a large living area and a huge bathroom (with double sink!) and we enjoyed sunset over the
beach from our balcony. The continental breakfast had a large choice of options, though mainly store bought. The Seattle's Best coffee was
delicious! The lobby even had cookies out one afternoon. The only downside was not having any assistance bringing luggage up to the second floor (no elevator access in the ocean front rooms).

The town is small but very quaint and the hotel offers room service from the restaurant down the block. There are even some wineries that offer tastings a block from the hotel. We'd highly recommend this and would definitely return to Avila Beach.

My wife and I recently spent two nights at the Avila Lighthouse Suites, which is built upon the formerly polluted sands of Avila Beach. The hotel is quite nice to look at, since it is new, but we had a few problems.

After a long drive, we were greeted by a reservations clerk who spent about ten minutes on the phone selling a room to a client who was more than happy to chat with her. There was no one else to help us, so we waited patiently and politely and were treated nicely once she got around to us. The room was well appointed, but I started to get a little nervous when I could hear people stomping along outside, as well as the sound of new construction across the street.

The beach is nearby, the grounds are well maintained, and the staff was generally nice. The breakfast was so so (although free) and the furnishings adequate. Sleeping in the room was another story. Every step taken by the occupants of the room above us was audible. The occupants themselves were probably fairly rowdy, but a hotel that charges as much as this one does should have had better insulation installed. We were very disappointed, and won`t stay here again.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2007

We just stayed at the Avila Lighthouse Suites in October 2007, and were very happy with our experience. It's not a luxury five-star resort by any means, and the vibe is definitely self-serve, but the property is immaculately landscaped and constantly cleaned. I would go back, which is more than I can say about many places. Everything looked brand new, and the few staff we did see were friendly. The rooms are suites, as the name of the place indicates, with a separate bedroom and living area, a king-size bed, sleeper sofa, two TVs, and a sink and microwave.

My only complaint was that our "deluxe" ocean front room had very little privacy, because it was on the first floor right next to the sidewalk. Passersby could very easily see and hear everything going on in our room. The only thing separating our balcony from the sidewalk was a low wall and landscaping. Of course, making the wall any higher would block the ocean view, so I guess life is full of tradeoffs. October appears to be the off season and we were there on a weekday, so there weren't a lot of people to bother us. I have a feeling this would be much more of an issue on summer weekends. For a future stay, I would demand an upper floor room away from the street, even if it meant giving up a direct ocean view.
