We - my husband and I - searched high and low for a hotel in Avila Beach. We love the SLO area, and came across the website for the Inn at Avila Beach. It looked so charming - we were really excited!
When we checked in, the woman was very pleasant and directed us to our room on the third floor. We were told at the time of reservation that there weren't elevators, so taking our luggage up three flights of stairs was anticipated and therefore, not a problem.
What was a problem was the room. It was dark and dingy. We paid extra for the ocean-view "mini suite." Suite!?! It was a room - that's it. The room felt and looked dirty, the bed didn't have a dust ruffle so the bottom mattress - a dirty yellow color - was completely exposed when you pulled the bedspread back. The "sultan bed" was covered in dark, dusty, old pillows. The "ocean view" meant that you had to crawl up onto the sultan bed and peer out the window and around the corner of the hotel.
While the room vaguely resembled the one in the website pictures, it was obviously not the quality of hotel that the website tried to convey. It truly was disappointing. I recognize the fact that the management has tried to put in special touches - fireplace and jacuzzi in-room, but I would suggest replacing soft furnishings such as bedspreads, perhaps new carpeting, etc.
Although the last person to place an unfavorable review of the property was quickly (and a bit unprofessionally) retorted to by the motel's management, I truly share her opinions when it comes to the quality of the room. (However, all staff members were very pleasant to me). I learned my lesson, and will never book a hotel unless it's been rated by Mobile and/or AAA. This one has not, or at least does not list the ratings.
