I just a short walk from the main street to Descanso Beach but worth the walk. You will pass by the old Casino and Avalon fishing club (as we found out in New Zealand ...the oldest fishing club in the world) on the way. We were a group of 18 and found a table out on the patio for food and drinks with one of the best views of the harbor.

My husband and I went on a 4 hour paddle with our guide "JP". We had a fantastic, personalized kayaking experience. "JP", an Avalon native, provided us with a background of island history, nature and his personal experiences growing up on Catalina.
We were kayaking in a "soup" of seals, dolphins, squid and bait fish. We also saw tiny jelly fish and garibaldi. We also saw many types of sea birds. We paddled to Long Point and back to the Descanso Beach Club, a four hour trip.
We enjoyed a great lunch on shore and a short hike to see the cherry trees.
All of the staff at the kayaking company were friendly and helpful. They have all the gear you need to stay dry and comfortable during your paddle.
Make a trip during off season to enjoy a relaxing, stimulating paddle tour.
We go in January and February so the beach is very quiet. Have taken the zip line which is fun! The beach area continues to improve - to the inclusion of a climbing wall for the young at heart.
Loved the bartender personality and the view by the beach...it's pricey but it's nice place to chill...
