“Perfect choice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2014

Ok...so I really stressed over where to stay, almost everyplace had some negative reviews. We were VERY happy we splurged here.
Almost all the rooms in every hotel in Avalon are small. The village is compact and charming.
We loved our room, the sound of the fountain in the courtyard was delightful to go to sleep to. We had one of the less expensive rooms and were perfectly happy with the courtyard/village view. The staff was very nice and helpful, assisted us selecting tours.
The place is clean, and the public spaces have a lot of charm. Cute details everywhere make the hotel feel special.
Location is really important since you will walk a lot, and the Avalon location is really ideal.
So charm, perfect location, nice people.
For some it may feel like close quarters, I was fine with it.
The setting for breakfast is divvied, but the food was only ok. Not up to the quality of every other aspect. Granola and boiled eggs are fine, but the rest was generic, The bread and baked goods could really use an upgrade. But seriously, with that setting, you will still be happy.

Room Tip: We went with a less expensive room, and were happy with our choice. I enjoyed being over the courtya...

Lovely 3 night stay at the Avalon. Great personal service you won't get in a larger hotel. Three floors with 6 rooms per floor - no elevator so you will get your exercise going up and down - especially with bags in hand. Great rooftop has lounge chairs, BBQ grill, tables and chairs. A great place to open a bottle of wine and soak up the sun and the views. Lovely courtyard patio below which is where continental breakfast buffet is set up all within lush gardens, with bubbling fountain and fire pit. Rooms are spacious, well appointed. Loved the tangerine body butter and body scrub! Our towels were rough and slightly "worn" and would have expected a little nicer quality in this type of boutique hotel. We were on the 3rd floor and Wifi was sporadic if we could get it at all. I think they should consider a Wifi booster! Down in the little lobby reception was good. Location of hotel is excellent - easy walk to shops, restaurants and beach.
A return trip will be in our future!

My wife and I decided to visit Catalina for our anniversary. I found a special package deal and took it. Loved the hotel and was impressed by:

. Friendly staff
. very clean rooms
. view of the bay
. bath tub curved to fit your back
. extensive use of African Mahogany through out
. always tea or coffee available in the lobby
. Snapple tea bottled water in the refrigerator
. just a half block from the bay and main shopping street

Definitely worth a return trip for us

We chose this hotel on our recent two day trip to Catalina based on the execellent TripAdvisor reviews, and we were not disappointed. The hotel has been remodeled in excellent taste, and they offer a great weekend special, which includes free round-trip ferry ride from Long Beach for two, free taxi transfer to and from the port, and a very nice buffet breakfast. We'll stay there again and can easily recommend it to adults -- families would probably be better served at one of the many vacation rental homes in Avalon.

My daughter and I stayed at the Avalon Hotel for 3 nights over New Years 2014. The staff was very helpful with the reservation and provided me with a lot of information on the island and the hotel when I called in for our reservation. I also purchased the package, as recommended, which included the ferry & taxi and found that to be a great savings. The staff also made recommendations for some great local dining and sightseeing. I selected one of the rooms with two beds, one being a double trundle bed. Both beds were comfortable and, though the room was smaller than some hotels, there was plenty of room. There was only room for 2 wooden backed chairs and it would have been nice if there was room for something like a club chair to relax in while reading. We had a great view of the harbor from the sliding glass door window in our room (206) which was a big plus. Since the hotel is small there are a limited number of rooms that face the harbor and I was glad I had selected one of them. The bathroom was nicely appointed with some nice soaps, scrubs and balms. The garden was quite pleasant for breakfast which included light pastries, boiled eggs, fruit, cereals and yogurts. There were plenty of snacks and a Kreurig coffeemaker at the front desk; bottled water, juice and coffee were available in the room at no additional charge. The only downside of room 206 is that it abuts the stairway which, when used by a group of children can be a bit noisy but, for the most part, the hotel was otherwise peaceful and quiet. The hotel was a block up from the main street in town and it was easy to access all of the shops and restaurants by walking.

Room Tip: The front desk staff described the rooms in great detail when I called and each room is also feature...

Thank you for posting such a detailed review. We are pleased you enjoyed all our amenities. Room 206 is one of our smaller rooms, perhaps on a future stay you may want to look at room 101 or 201, either of which may accommodate your needs better as the rooms are a bit larger. Thank you for choosing our hotel for your stay and we hope to see you soon.

Based on reservation handling alone I would give 5 stars. I spoke by phone with Richard and he put together a nice 3 night package. He was prompt and professional with a nice personal touch. I hoped this would transfer to the stay and let him know this was a special trip for my husbands birthday.
We arrived and checked in, again mentioning it was my husbands birthday and the trip was for him. First "miss" was there was never any acknowledgement of it. Others mentioned wine or champagne in the rooms but he got none. The room was smaller than photos make it appear ( and a little dark too) but nice, clean and newly refurbished. Breakfasts were served on the lovely patio and there were boiled eggs, cereals, fruit, pastries, coffee etc. all very good. The keurig in the lobby was a nice touch and so were snacks. Late on our last night we happened to be in the lobby while a couple were checking in. The lady behind the desk was explaining "turndown service" they would get which included chocolates on their pillows. Wait??? We had been there 2 nights and did not have turn down service. We had noticed the small pouches of chocolates hanging from the ocean view rooms but not ours. Petty...perhaps...but again better to under promise and over deliver than not.
I can say we would stay there again overall, but maybe they were just a bit off since they were clearly tearing apart and refurbishing 2 other rooms while we were there.
So next time I would be blunt if it"s for a special occasion and ask directly for something special. And petty as it seems, verify ALL the amenities upon check in.
P.S.the orange bath products were yummy! !

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We do offer turn down service as an option at check-in, we regret this was not covered with you. We apologize for not acknowledging your husband's birthday during your stay and have discussed these oversights in a recent staff meeting. Thank you for sharing your insights. We hope you decide to try us again on a future stay to Catalina Island.

We should there for 8 days. It was nice location. Everything was walking distance. Cleaniness of the hotel was nice. Very nice and friendly staff; plus they were really helpful. Would love to visit again there. Only thing I would say about the rooms and beds were smaller than expectations.

Room Tip: If somebody can't walk upstairs a lot then take room on downstairs because there is no elevator...

Thank you for your complimentary review. All our staff takes pride in their work and appreciates your acknowledgement. The City of Avalon, as many other older seaside communities, consist of hotel rooms that may be somewhat smaller than traditional chain hotel brands on the mainland but that is just one of the many things that makes us unique in a generic world.
