“Perfect Catalina weekend at the Avalon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

My friend and I had our first visit to Catalina over the weekend. We took advantage of a promotion at the Avalon which included the ferry, and hotel transport. We arrive on Friday evening just after their wine and cheese happy your for guests. Laurie however knew we were arriving on a later, and happily poured a lovely Cab for us on the picturesque patio. Rosie welcomed us at our check-in detail all of the features and amenities we could expect including the breakfast schedule; the treasure trove of snick-snacks available anytime; the Keurig and its stash of coffee and fixins; and a description of food, beverage, and shopping places not to miss. The hotel is visually appealing with lovely wood treatments everywhere. It's maintained beautifully by a crack staff who are cheerful and helpful - especially when we needed that extension cord on the patio!. Loved the Avalon, and it's people. Made our first trip to Catalina a resounding success. Their $50 gift card to to us upon departure will be an added bonus on our next visit! Thanks again Rosie for the wine!

I have been coming over to Catalina and Avalon since I was a small child, more than 50 years. One of the remarkable changes in the last ten years has been the cleaning up of the City of Avalon. The Island Company and the local business owners seem to have found a balance of tidying the streets, encouraging some nice new businesses, and restoring some of the old ones yet keeping the quaint air of Avalon intact.
One of the true gems is the Avalon Hotel. Ask to see the remodel album if your interested in how they turned this old "divers" hotel into a lovely boutique bed and breakfast. True there are no elevators and you will need to lug your bags to your room, but thats part of the deal when you don't want to stay in a chain hotel. The attention to details such as the handmade "Catalina" tiles, the Koi pond in the garden, the more than continental breakfast make the Avalon special. Also,on a practical level, the Avalon's location just behind the Metropole at the quieter end of town is exceptional. Sometimes the promenade can be a little rowdy and sitting on the 4th floor deck overlooking the harbor and City is a great escape.
We traveled as three couples and we all stayed in garden view rooms. We liked each of them.Ours was on the third floor and had a view from the window of the garden and beyond to the green pier. We have already recommended the Hotel to friends.

Our 2nd stay at the Avalon Hotel, and the outstanding service, amenities, and room condition remains very high. (Consistency) Spent a day at the beach, and the Sun Screen provided with the bath amenities was a welcome surprise. Lorie & Richard were great . . . as usual, along with the entire staff. We stayed in first floor again to avoid the stairs, but the nice thing about the first floor at the Avalon Hotel is that its still elevated above the street level for added security and better view. The balconies are huge and plenty of room for the wife's scooter, which means its not in the way in the room. Thanks for another great stay.

Room Tip: Stayed in 103, last room on the first floor and close to the back door where there are only four ste...

In such a small community (Avalon Harbor) it might be taken for granted that every property is well located. That's not the case. The Avalon Hotel is situated far enough from the high density tourist area to enjoy real calm and quiet; a joy when you're sitting on your balcony, or on the fully furnished rooftop, or in the terrific "backyard" patio area where help-yourself breakfast greets you each morning. Surrounded by well manicured plants and privacy walls, the brick and pavers courtyard takes your blood pressure down by 10 points with its tranquil features including a Koi pond and fire pit - perfect for foggy morning coffee. Of course, the rooms and facilities are first rate, as other reviewers have mentioned. But, the most obvious amenity is the special care the staff takes to make your stay on the island a pleasant and relaxing one. No question about island activities or travel went unanswered. No personal need was left unattended. That's a well run establishment and reflects the leadership of the on site staff and owners. Well done.

Room Tip: If you travel to Catalina to hole up in a hotel room (and we understand that has its place), a balco...

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay at the Avalon Hotel. The staff was very friendly and attentive, the rooms were clean and modern, though small. The Friday happy hour was nice, as was the rooftop deck. There were lots of free little niceties (snacks in the lobby, bottled water in the courtyard, continental breakfast); the wifi was also free, but never worked reliably on any device. Net net, my wife and I are on the fence about our next stay - there's a lot to like, but at $675 for two nights, it was too pricey. If it were more reasonable, they'd have our repeat business no questions asked.

My husband and I went to Catalina for the first time. a few weekends ago and Purchased a Weekend Getaway package over the phone with Rosy. He was so helpful, she definitely goes out of her way to take care of her guests at the hotel. I can't even believe that she has only been working there for only 2 months yet it seems that she has been there forever. She is from Catalina so she has so much knowledge and is extremely helpful at recommending activities for us, restaurants and all the most-dos on Catalina for a rookie.

This Hotel is in a perfect location. So close to the beach yet far enough where it is quiet and peaceful. love their garden area, the koi pond and all the humming birds in the garden.

Their complimentary continental breakfast was great!! LOVED every bit of it. And not to forget the Complimentary Wine and Cheese in the evenings (Thank you Laurie you were great!). They also have a Keurig coffee maker and tropical flavor iced tea in the lobby.

I highly recommend this Hotel to everyone. I'm back home already planning our next trip to Catalina.

Thank you so much ladies for making our trip unforgettable. You ROCK!!!

We purchased a package deal that included 2 nights and roundtrip Catalina Express ride for 2 people. We can't say enough how worth it this deal ended up - with all the service, amenities, staff. This 15 room hotel is beautiful interior and exterior. The amenities and complimentary items you get far exceeds a 4 star hotel. (Read Melodie S review - she listed everything!) We plan to always stay at The Avalon Hotel in our future trips to Catalina. Thank you for making our stay a memorable one!

Room Tip: If you don't do stairs well, book your room on the first floor. There is no elevator.
