“Superb!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2013

We had a wonderful time at this hotel. The room was clean and comfortable, and the location was perfect, in a quiet part of Avalon near the Casino.

We took advantage of the special birthday rates, and had a glass of champagne on the sun terrace, which provides an expansive view of the harbor. The beach is right across the street, and the hotel provides beach chairs and towels. Enjoy! We also took a walk along the shore and saw dolphins playing in the waves.

The contentinental breakfast provided everything we needed. We took a tray and sat outdoors at the little tables that are provided.

One night, we walked over to the Avalon Casino to watch a movie in the elegant theater. We also attended the Catalina Film Festival.

Room Tip: We were happy with our room on the ground floor. To ensure quiet at night, we closed the ventilation...

We decided to stay overnight on Catalina at the last minute and walked in asking for a room. Our room was simple, spotless and well laid out. The hotel is right in the heart of downtown Avalon, across from the ocean. The continental break fast was fantastic with fresh muffins, fruit and scones. And we enjoyed it out doors with a beautiful view. The only reason my rating isn't higher is because the room itself was pretty basic and plain. We would definitely stay here again.

This hotel is literally steps away from the beach. It is in the heart of Avalon's shops and dining. It is well maintained and very clean. It has a serene courtyard with seating and tables, a sun deck overlooking the bay with chaise lounges, chairs and tables, and cabanas. They lend sand chairs and towels to take to the beach. They offer a free continental breakfast with pastries and fruit. I didn't see any where else that I thought would have been a better place to stay.

Room Tip: We had a courtyard room.

Our trip was perfect! The hotel was absolutely beautiful and the staff extremely accommodating. I definitely recommend staying here. The hotel is situated directly across from the ocean and within walking distance to all sites, tours, restaurants and shops.

Room Tip: The inside court area rooms are very charming with a great sitting area in the court yard.

The hotel was a pleasure to stay in. My husband and I took our 10 year old grandson for his "special trip" to Southern California. Since he asked to go to an island for the first time for a part of this trip, we chose Catalina. I was glad I chose Hotel Villa Portofino as it provided him with a different experience from the nice, but predictable, chain hotels. The room we had was not large but well appointed and as there are no "2 queen" rooms to be had on Catalina, we had a king and there was a super comfortable "floor bed" all made up for him, and we still had plenty of room. Our grandson said it was the only hotel bed on the trip that provided a great night's sleep!
The sun deck has a great view and comfortable seating and lounges. Breakfast is light, but the scones, muffins, etc. are all high quality and plentiful with good fresh fruit along with it. Enjoying it outside at the "sidewalk cafe" setting was so much better than CNN in a sterile "breakfast room".
Best of all, the hospitality is great, with the sun deck, luggage storage, rest room, beach towels and chairs, & fresh fruit available from the time you arrive from the ferry to the time the ferry leaves in late afternoon.

This is Always a Great Hotel to stay at, especially during Jazztrax. Very convenient to everything and the staff is very courteous and helpful. Views of the Ocean are Great. My friends and I have been staying here for years. We have had courtyard rooms, hillside rooms and oceanview rooms, all the rooms are wonderful. Each room has nice comfy beds, big bathrooms, large sitting areas and gas fireplaces. The sundeck is also very nice to sit and relax.

- I did extensive research on planning my honeymoon hotel prior to picking Hotel Villa Portofino. The hotel's staff was great, kind and welcoming. Price was good for 2 night stay compared to the other locations and their accommodations.
- Check-in was quick, room was exactly what I expected.
- The hotel view: The hotel was constructed in a way that there is no immediate ocean view from hotel rooms but to get one it's a few steps away on the hotel guest balcony, my wife and I lounged on the balcony for few hours and weren't disturbed by the occasional hotel guest coming to enjoy the ocean view.
- Breakfast is small as the other posts have stated. Pastries, juice, coffee, fruits.
- Like most other hotels on the island, there aren't any elevators so you may get the wonderful opportunity to flex your muscles carrying your luggage up the stairs, if you don't like that then pack light and don't complain so much (like other posts).
- And the last thing that any reviewer wants to read - Would we ever stay at Hotel Villa Portofino ever again? Our answer - YES because of value, location, just want we are looking for.

For those in the future visiting Catalina Island & staying at this hotel here are some tips:
1) You're not going to get the Hilton/Hyatt in any hotel so quit thinking about that while you search. Rooms will be small, bathrooms will be small, there won't be any elevators, but at the least each hotel will do its best to make it comfortable for you. ***I did tell the staff at Portofino that I did NOT want the room located near the guest balcony nor the room located near the stairs.*** Thank you for not giving me either, much appreciated!
2) Call to make your reservation, it's easier to explain via phone what kind of hotel room you're looking for and ask what they have.
3) Go online and search for Catalina Express coupon, there's a $5 Off coupon located on Long Beach tourist website: http://www.visitlongbeach.com/. Good until end of the 2013-year. Sit on the right side of the boat to get the best view of the island.
4) Once on the island, don't get the taxi to drive you to the hotel from the pier unless you want to waste $11. I read this in a previous post but when we got there I got the taxi, then felt like an idiot doing it :-). We walked back to the pier when our stay was over and it was a pleasant walk back.
5) Do the golf cart tour, it was worth it. Don't do the boring hummer tour unless you don't like to drive and you're lazy. Getting the golf cart allows you to stop & step out, do a bit of hiking and take our own time.

- Have a fun journey.
