“Lovely hotel on a pretty island!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

We had a girl's getaway here, and loved every single minute of our stay. Our rooms were clean, comfortable, and reasonably priced. The beach is out the front door, and we took beach chairs and read by the sea. The location is perfect! We walked to the movies at night (loved Gone With The Wind) and hiked during the day. We also loved the breakfast and dined on the front patio with the bay as our view. The only downside: the sun deck was being "repaired" every time we tried to sit there (at least three times). Even still, the place is fabulous and we didn't miss much by not being able to enjoy the sundeck, but it was part of the reason we wanted to stay there in the first place.

I can't imagine a better place to stay in Avalon. The style of the hotel and the neighborhood remind me of Europe. The view of the bay from the deck is heavenly. Just a short walk to anywhere you want to go in Avalon. Continental Breakfast is provided as well as a holding area for your luggage before check-in time and after check-out time until you catch your boat ride back to reality. I wish we could have stayed longer. We will definitely come back. The package deal with the boat transportation included was a great deal.

Room Tip: They all seemed nice to me. I personally prefer to be upstairs so I don't have to hear people ov...

The staff at Villa Portofino are so incredibly warm and welcoming. We brought our 9 month old with us on our trip, and John, the owner, treated her like she was his own child. He went out of his way to make sure she had a comfortable place to sleep and spent time giggling with her. He even loaned out his sons' beach toys for her to play with. They treated us like we were family. They provide fresh baked goods in the mornings and coffee/tea throughout the day. We bought the package deal that included a helicopter ride and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it! The location is perfect and within walking distance of everything. I would HIGHLY recommend Villa Portofino to anyone traveling to Catalina.

The Hotel VP is on the same cobble path as the main part of Avalon, but it is far enough away to enjoy a quieter setting with the exception of some minor road noise. The VP has an old-world charm of a villa in the Mediterranean. The staff is fabulous. We had to deal with little children running back and forth above us and down the stairs which were located parallel to our first room, but that was quickly solve by Luis who was very helpful. The rooms were on the older side, but nothing too out dated. I would highly recommend spending a few more dollars and booking a room with a view.

Room Tip: Room with an ocean view.

My significant other and I had traveled to the Catalina Islands and didn't know what to expect! We were excited to see the deal that they had on their website with the ferry fee added in, so we gave it a whirl and decided to book the room for one night. Boy, were we in for a treat when we had arrived! The hotel was WAY more than what we had expected! The hotel staff were extremely friendly and definitely made our stay very comfortable. The hotel is right along the beach and is very close to everything. We had a room that didn't have a view, but we ended up liking it because it gave us more privacy. There was an open patio with furniture right when we stepped outside of our room and we loved how old fashioned the hotel was with their hotel keys and with their unique doors. At the end of our trip, we were planning on keeping our luggage in the lockers near the dock, but we were pleasantly surprised to know that the hotel staff were willing to keep our luggage at the hotel UNTIL our ferry left! We still had about 5 hours left on the island! We were very happy with that. The only thing I would say that would make our stay a bit more enjoyable would be the breakfast food. We hoped that there would have been hot breakfast, but other than that I would definitely recommend this hotel over the others on the island!

This was our first time visiting Catalina Island, and we really enjoyed staying at the Hotel Villa Portofino. While our room was not huge, it was very cozy and clean. We loved the way that all of the hotel rooms looked out on the courtyard, and that we were just steps away from the sun deck. The offered a continental breakfast of fruit, muffins, scones, coffee, teas, and hot chocolate that we took advantage of every morning. The staff was very friendly. Check-in and check-out was done quickly, and efficiently. They never hesitated to point us in the right direction when we had any sort of question. The only drawback to this hotel is how paper-thin the walls were. We had quiet neighbors, but we could hear them talking at a normal level in the mornings. We enjoyed that we were so close to the shore, but off at the end of the main drag, so that we were more secluded.

Stayed here for one night on a recent trip. The staff were very helpful when we arrived early. Keep our luggage until check in. The room was very nice and clean. The location is great. On the main drag but at the end so a little quieter.Would definitely stay again.
