“History abounds but it's an uphill climb, then there are stairs!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

Built in the 1920s, there is a lot of history here about the famous author, Zane Grey. There also are a lot of steps! Steep steps leading everywhere you need to go. First, from street level up to the office. Then down a flight of steep, narrow steps to your room. We found a shortcut, up a shorter flight to get to the pool and breakfast area and a very nice place to sit overlooking the harbor. If you walk from town, it's uphill all the way but a complimentary taxi awaits guests at the boat docks and also makes daily trips back and forth into town, just a quick phone call.
There are no phones or televisions in the rooms, with is a definite plus. The community room on the main level is gorgeous with ample space for all the guests, if they should all come in at the same time! Only downfall is that there is no handicap accessibility anywhere in the hotel. I'm glad we stayed there but doubt if we will return.

Room Tip: Ask for one without so many stairs leading to it.

My wife and I discovered the Zane Grey about 7 years ago and have come here at least once or twice a year ever since. If you want luxury, go somewhere else. If you want a full breakfast, go somewhere else. If you want the best amenities, go somewhere else. However, if you want a quiet, very relaxing hotel with the best view on the island, don't go anywhere else. Get an ocean view room, preferably one on the lower end of the pool, and wake to the sunrise over the ocean.

This place is old. As I said, we've been coming here for 7 years or so. In that time I don't think there has been one upgrade to the rooms. We usually stay in Desert Wheat or Purple Sage since those have the best room views I think.

The problems: This place is not without its problems. The carpet is old. The bedspreads are old and ugly. The room decor is, well, old. You get toast for breakfast. The doors to the rooms are not soundproof so you hear hall traffic and sometimes people in other rooms. The showers are tiny and not all that nice looking. The bathrooms are tiny.

Why it's the only place we stay at Avalon: The view is breathtaking. It's absolutely beautiful. They discourage children and in all the times we've been here there have not been any. It is quiet. It is not down on the main drag. There's no TV in the rooms. There's no phone in the rooms. These are positives for us because we come here to forget the hustle and bustle and being at the Zane Grey is like being in another time and place for us. We can truly forget about the stresses of the world and just be with each other in a beautiful place.

Other things to consider. This hotel is a climb if you're on foot. We like that because we're active people. There is a free shuttle from the hotel to the taxi stand at a few times during the day if you call ahead. Checkout time is at 10:00 a.m. which I'm not too fond of.

We have been here in the winter and in the summer. Never been too hot inside. The heaters are ancient but they work so who cares.

Overall, we love this place with all its faults and weaknesses. It's like the old blanket that's full of holes and wearing out but you can't give up because you love it so much and it's so comfortable.

Room Tip: The ocean view rooms are why you come here. The upper rooms don't have a view while you're l...

Ask for the Tonto Rim room. Absolutely incredible view of Avalon Harbor. The hotel is a bit dated, but if your expectations are realistic, this hotel offers a tremendous Catalina experience. Very nice common areas to sit and read, enjoy the ambiance or just "veg" It's close to the chime tower, but not to worry; the chimes don't ring past 8:00 PM and don't start up until 8:00 AM. Management offers scheduled shuttle service to and from, saving you an intense climb up to the hotel (if you schedule your day intelligently). We'll be back!!

I have been coming to this very special place atop the hill in Avalon, located right next to the bell tower that chimes for the last six years or so--each time I need to get away from my daily grind and get transformed from inside out! One single day stretches into non-ending hours and hours and seems like eternity to me. Don't get me wrong. This is not by any means a lush hotel--for those of you who require creature comforts. Their rooms are basic (although they overlook the most spectacular scenery possible). Their beds are outdated and their bathrooms are very tiny and simple. And you need to walk straight up a cardiac hill from the street each time you walk down to town to get a meal; unless you rent a golf cart. My husband and I don't. In fact, we usually come to this hotel in Catalina specifically to put in 10-mile hike or walk days and experience the peace and serenity that being at the Zane Grey offers. It is NOT a hotel for everyone: only those in fit condition and the desire to rough it out in exchange for Avalon's beauty. Their prices are just under $100 for off-season and up to $140 during spring and summer. A simple breakfast of coffee, toast and fresh fruit is included in the room price.

Room Tip: Ask for a harbor view or a mountain view when booking--depending on your preference.

Twenty years ago today, my husband and I got married on the patio at this lovely property. This evening, my husband surprised me with dinner on that same patio. A HUGE thank you to Michael, the manager, who has such a romantic soul! We spent our fifth year anniversary in one of the original rooms (the Purple Sage) and intend to continue our traditions at this beautiful property. If you are looking for views that just don't quit, historic properties, peace, quiet and total relaxation....I recomend the Zane Grey!!

This old hotel is in a wonderful location overlooking Avalon and the bay - and that is the only good thing to say about it. It is very poor value and appears not to have been updated for at least 50 years. Heating was provided by a two bar electric fire for the bedroom. There was no heating in the sitting area and in January 2013 it was so cold that this room was not useable. 'Breakfast' was exceptionally poor and taken outside in the cold. Tiny bathroom was archaic. Bedding old - at least 50 years old and well past it's use by date. Flaking paint and furnishings very poor quality and badly painted. Wait until it has new owners and has been updated ...

Room Tip: If you really must stay here ask for a room overlooking the bay.

The Zane Grey is an interesting place. This was one of Zane Grey's homes. It has historical significance and there are photos and information about the late author. The best part about this hotel are the views. It's on top of Avalon overlooking the Harbor and surrounding hills. The views from the rooms are wonderful regardless of location.
The property sits on a large lot (rare for that area). There are deer that roam through the property and cats that hang out outside. There is a small swimming pool and a deck in the back and a deck at the front porch to just hang out.
This is not the place to stay if you re looking for luxury and pampering. It is an old building built in the early 1920's and has been maintained but had little updating. The rooms are small but comfortable. Our room had two small closets that contained a shower in one and a toilet and tiny sink in the other. There is a rack on the wall of the room to hang your clothes.
Since the rooms are small you can also hang out in the living room that contains a piano, a large couch that really needs replacing, and a small old TV.
They offer a "continental" breakfast. Since we like actual breakfast we didn't bother with it and walked downhill to town to eat. A five minute walk and good exercise.
The hotel manager/check-in person was friendly and accommodating.
Overall, you basically get what you pay for. If you are on a tight budget and don't have high expectations, you might like it. If anything you will at least get the best view!

Room Tip: Go for the Harbor view rooms!
