“Oceanfront Hotel on Catalina Island”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

I believe this hotel only has 15 rooms in total. The hotel is on the third floor, and there is no elevator, so be prepared for the two flights of stairs. In spite of this inconvenience, the concierge was very helpful and accomodating; he came down to street level to help carry the luggage up to our rooms. In the lobby, there is a wonderful large saltwater aquarium. If I were to estimate the size, I would surmise the tank held 500 gallons of water. The beautiful fishes offered a great moment to experience the "living art" of the Vista Del Mar.
Our room was pleasant. A flatscreen television and fireplace were nice touches. The television viewing offered a variety of choices, including HBO and the Tennis Channel, two of my personal favorites. They also offered a fair selection of bluray/dvd movies at the front desk, which could be checked out for our viewing pleasure as well. There was also a little wetbar with a refrigerator filled with drinks and snacks. (These treats were NOT free of charge). In the morning, the hotel offered a complimentary breakfast, including toasted bagels, yogurt, bananas, milk and cereal. At 8 p.m. every evening, the hotel offered freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and milk.
There were a few small gripes I had, although I must make the point that these were rather minor in nature. First off, the website advertised that their bathrooms had whirlpool jacuzzi tubs. Our room did not have a bathtub; instead, there was a walk-in shower/sauna. We also had a minor complication with our toilet, as it flooded during our second evening at the hotel. In spite of this predicament, the front desk was very expedient in unclogging the toilet and cleaning the bathroom floor. Lastly, as the rooms are all in a hallway, there was no outside (let alone oceanview) windows to see the beautiful surroundings. The hotel does offer "two" oceanview rooms with balconies (they are located at the front of the hotel, overlooking the boardwalk below), but I can only imagine that the room prices would be much more expensive.
Overall, we had a wonderful, romantic two night stay in Catalina. The Hotel is a little bit pricey, but it may be for their excellent service, high quality room accomodations, and most importantly, convenient proximity to the beach directly below.

Room Tip: One little helpful tip is that the back of the hallway has an exit leading out to the street below...

Beautiful hotel situated above a restaurant and shops. Large, spacious room with fireplace, sitting area and wetbar. Upgraded amenities. Very helpful front desk staff. Close to everything. Vons Express immediately behind the hotel and a great restaurant the "Lobster Trap", across the street.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the great location, perfect room. Rent a bike, tour the Island via
trolley. Visit Wrigleys monument and gardens. Fun mini-vacation. . .

Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Our room was 104, worried about being so close to the front desk, but no issue. Nice courtyard atri...

Bf surprised me with a weekend getaway to Catalina Island (1.5 hr boat ride from Orange County). The hotel is right smack in the middle of the island fronting the pier and surrounded by restaurants, shops and water activities. We had room 102, one of the 2 suites in the building facing the water. We had a balcony, living room, jacuzzi, fireplace and a huge bathroom. Set him back $500 a night but we had a great time. It was hard to leave the hotel because of the amenities and fabulous view. We will be back for sure!

My wife and I went out to Catalina with another couple for an overnight trip. We got a package deal with the boat ride over there and back included. Let me start out by saying that the Vista Del Mar is in a great location in Avalon. It's right in the middle of everything! The staff was all great from our check in to check out I felt like they did whatever we asked with a smile. The breakfast was great! They have a great checked bag service. We even needed some things out of our bags after checking out and they not only got our bags out for us but let us use their personal bathroom to change our clothes before the boat ride back. I have not stayed many places in Avalon but I know I will only stay here from now on!!! They do have no elevator and you need to walk up two flights of stairs to get there so keep that in mind. Did not matter in our party but just an FYI.

Not only is Avalon quaint and cozy, but it wouldn't have been as enjoyable if it weren't for our stay at the Vista Del Mar. We had a blast. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We had the fireplace go out one evening and the lady at the desk came and helped us herself. Between the 3 of us we figured it out. My wife and I just loved the fireplace, so getting it going again was paramount. lol Great ambiance with the hall and balcony with the signature fish tank as well as the continental breakfast and milk and cookies at night. Time just slowed down when we got settled in. Just what we needed and just what you need. Steve's Restaurant is a class act. I had the catch of the day and the key lime pie, which is otherworldly. You cant go wrong at Steve's. Bouys and Gulls on the ground floor was a class act also. Bought more things there than anywhere else. The HVDM is perfect for Avalon. Stay and cozy up or go explore the island. This is the perfect spot.

Room Tip: Any room is fine. Just pick the one that will fit your needs. They are all quiet since it's a wa...

Beautiful boutique hotel right on the waterfront. It's a hidden jewel with just 15 rooms. We had no problem finding it or getting luggage up to the third floor. The staff is more than willing to help you with luggage or anything else you might need. We stayed in a courtyard deluxe room. Absolutely amazing use of space in the rooms and the reception area; efficiently used but doesn't make you feel like it's a small property. All finishing touches throughout the property are elegant and well-maintained. While a continental breakfast might sound plain, they kick it up a notch with a nice presentation and better quality offerings than most places. Would definitely stay here again. I could just sit in the lounge area looking out the window for hours! They also have a sister property just a block away (Snug Harbor) in case you find Vista Del Mar booked up.

Located right on the beachfront in Avalon, and close to everything, this hotel is really very relaxing. Though one has to walk up two flights of stairs to the main desk ( with bags ) it is well worth the final destination. With a sit down lunge area just off the main lobby with exotic fish tank the views are right there in front of you, the pier, the beach ( even a small and short as it is ), the tourist promenade and the harbor.
The stay is relaxing and uneventful ( perfect for a restful and relaxing stay ), the rooms really quite simple yet exquiste. Rooms have been updated to the point where it looks like they were originally built that way, not at all like a typical remodel.
My only complaint - the walls are thin and one can hear a little from adjoining rooms, but definitely not unacceptable. Bathroom is very nice yet small.

Room Tip: All rooms are equally good. The lobby and landscaped access hallway to the rooms are covered yet out...
