I believe this hotel only has 15 rooms in total. The hotel is on the third floor, and there is no elevator, so be prepared for the two flights of stairs. In spite of this inconvenience, the concierge was very helpful and accomodating; he came down to street level to help carry the luggage up to our rooms. In the lobby, there is a wonderful large saltwater aquarium. If I were to estimate the size, I would surmise the tank held 500 gallons of water. The beautiful fishes offered a great moment to experience the "living art" of the Vista Del Mar.
Our room was pleasant. A flatscreen television and fireplace were nice touches. The television viewing offered a variety of choices, including HBO and the Tennis Channel, two of my personal favorites. They also offered a fair selection of bluray/dvd movies at the front desk, which could be checked out for our viewing pleasure as well. There was also a little wetbar with a refrigerator filled with drinks and snacks. (These treats were NOT free of charge). In the morning, the hotel offered a complimentary breakfast, including toasted bagels, yogurt, bananas, milk and cereal. At 8 p.m. every evening, the hotel offered freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and milk.
There were a few small gripes I had, although I must make the point that these were rather minor in nature. First off, the website advertised that their bathrooms had whirlpool jacuzzi tubs. Our room did not have a bathtub; instead, there was a walk-in shower/sauna. We also had a minor complication with our toilet, as it flooded during our second evening at the hotel. In spite of this predicament, the front desk was very expedient in unclogging the toilet and cleaning the bathroom floor. Lastly, as the rooms are all in a hallway, there was no outside (let alone oceanview) windows to see the beautiful surroundings. The hotel does offer "two" oceanview rooms with balconies (they are located at the front of the hotel, overlooking the boardwalk below), but I can only imagine that the room prices would be much more expensive.
Overall, we had a wonderful, romantic two night stay in Catalina. The Hotel is a little bit pricey, but it may be for their excellent service, high quality room accomodations, and most importantly, convenient proximity to the beach directly below.
