“Way exceeded expectations!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2011

I believe this is a new property & I hope this is what all new Hampton Inns will be like in the future... Nice room, good layout, good bed/bedding, very clean. One of the best fitness centers I've seen (even vs much more expensive hotels). Nice pool & hot tub area. Very good breakfast. Very functional /well laid out common areas. Friendly staff.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights in late September while on a driving trip in Oregon and Northern California. As I have been a Hilton Diamond member for the past 12 years, the reader can infer that I know the Hampton Inn brand well.....and the reader would be right. When traveling in lesser populated parts of the US, one is rather restricted in lodging choices to lower end motels/hotels, some of which are in franchised chains and most of which are independently owned and operated. There are of course many fine independently owner hotels/motels in this world......the problem is to discern in advance which are fine ones and which are not. Hence the power of the brand the the implied standards which can usually be relied on to produce a known product. For this reason primarily, I booked the Hampton Inn in Arcata prior to arrival in the Eureka area. I always read previous reviews with interest.....it is always surprising to me to read the incredible diversity of viewpoints on the same property in the same time frame. This Hampton Inn has some strong attributes. It is new.....and therefore its appointments, and technology are new......everything works. Yet with new properties, where technology and "things" work, somethings employee teams aren't yet fully in sync.....and little glitches occur. Our experience in this Inn illustrated both points. The Inn is a great value.....new at reasonable rates is hard to beat. When we returned from our first full day's outing we discovered that our room key didn't work......(a glitch -- it had timed out). When we did get into the room at the end of a long day we discovered that the room hand't been serviced.....an oversight....yet a bit of a letdown. A phone call to the desk remedied the problem to a degree.....new towels were promptly delivered to the room....with a sincere apology and a reduction in our room rate for the stay. So, despite the inconveniences, management promptly made amends in every possible way and the problem is now forgotten. So.....a new property.....a very willing shift manager....a location convenient to all local attractions......really this Hampton Inn is in the top end of its class.....and really must be one of the best values in the area. If we return here, we wouldn't stay elsewhere, based on anything we now know.

Not sure about what else is around town in terms of solid, national hotel chains, but this is certainly THE best hotel in the area. Clean, nice parking lot, rooms were nearly new, fast internet.

Room Tip: Join HiltonHonors... same rub as all hotel chains!

This was a great find and the best of the 5 hotels we stayed in on our OR/CA travels,
With friendly service, lovely bedding ( love that the duvets are cleaned for each new guest, none of that dirty bedspread going on), spacious room and bathroom, and very clean everything, it was a joy to be in. The building was thoughtfully planned, example, the ice machine is behind a glass door so it's quieter, and the breakfast lounge area is beautiful. This is my first Hampton and will definitely check out the chain again.

The hotel is in a seedy looking area of town, but inside it's new and nice enough. My problem with this hotel was the bed. Although they have massive puffy comforters on the bed, the mattresses leave something to be desired. I have gone camping and slept on rocks that were softer than the mattresses on these beds (I had a double queen room, and tried both beds). Also, as with another reviewer, I had a problem with the a/c unit switching on and off very noisily throughout the night. I had the a/c set pretty low and it wasn't turning on until the room temp had become MUCH higher than the setting on the thermostat. I couldn't open the window more than a crack to let in the nice breeze so I wouldn't have to run the a/c, because my window on the 2nd floor had a safety lock that the top had been cut off of, so it couldn't be opened. I highly doubt someone would climb up two floors right outside the lobby doors to get into a second story room, so I found the safety lock quite annoying. The lobby staff were quite nice and helpful, the morning breakfast was average hotel freebie fare. If you like a hard, hard mattress, this is the place to go. If not, look elsewhere, this was one of the worst night's sleep I've had in a long time!

Stayed here for only one night. The room itself was very clean and well maintained as you'd expect of a big chain. The hotel itself offers nothing out of the ordinary (e.g comfortable bed, desk, decent bathroom, etc.). However, we could hear the folks in the room next door talking on a few occasions, so there appears to be a slight issue with the sound proofing in the rooms.

The location the hotel is based in means there are no good restaurants within walking distance. The restaurants in the shopping area directly next door to the hotel are best avoided, meaning a drive into Arcata town itself. This is a real nuisance after a long drive up the coast.
