I started with a glass of Chianti and some calamari "frit". It was a dish of fried calamari with mushrooms that was breaded, however it was way too greasy. it was hard to wash it down with warm red wine. I tried to enjoy the view from my window seat of the 2 dying trees and the sidewalk but it didn't help with the taste.
The salad that came with meal was okay but nothing special.
The ciopinno (fish stew) was served over a layer of overcooked spaghetti. While the sauce was tasty, the clams were overcooked and 2 of the 6 shells were empty. The mussels came in cracked and broken shells and again 3 of the 5 were empty. The 2 shrimp were still in the shells and were way overcooked. I felt the portion size was too small and they used the pasta to fill the dish. It was over $23 so I expected some fresher seafood and more stew than pasta. The garlic toast was spread with chunks of garlic that were so large, I had to scrape it off the bread. it was inedible. When my teeth chopped on sand in the stew, I finally gave up and left.
Okay, there were a few good things. The owner coming out with his accordian and singing Happy Birthday made for lots of smiles and clapping. I hope this was just an off night but I won't be back.
