We stayed at Townplace Suites Anaheim for the first time last July 2005.
Good - The price was great for a large room with full kitchen (including dishwasher). The space was a lot larger than a traditional sleeping room space and was more in-line in size with a Residence Inn - minus the fireplace. Due note, however, that the amenities and quality of furnishings were more in-line with an Extended-Stay property (which is less than Residence Inn quality but is do-able). Hotel parking was free and is connected to a multi-use development that includes a Bally's Fitness Spa, Denny's Restaurant, Panda Express eatery, Carl's Jr and a bank with ATM service. McDonald's is across the street. Food, exercise equipment and money are just steps from your hotel door. You can see some of Disney's 50th fireworks from the back parking lot near the train tracks.
Now the bad - The person at the check-in desk was not that friendly. My non-smoking room smelled like a cigar-filled Las Vegas casino. The bathroom tub had a very large, dark brown stain in it. I went to Target Store down the street to buy Comet and a Chore-boy sponge to try scrubbing the ring out before stepping into the tub. The stain would not come out. The security guard was very rude and acted somewhat suspicious to me..they need a security guard to watch over the security guard. The hotel is loud as you can hear hallway conversations in your room as though they were sitting in the sleeping room with you. Some of the towels provided had either stains or holes in them, which is strange because this is a relatively new hotel.
Different Experience Than Other Reviewers- We *WERE* given PLENTY of towels on a daily basis. So, we did not have this problem mentioned by other reviewers. We also left a daily tip for the maid...so maybe this is why we got more towels? You do have to empty your own trash, though. Regarding the train...the train tracks do run behind the hotel. Our room overlooked the pool area and the train tracks, but we weren't bothered by the sound, it wasn't that loud at all. The noise inside the hotel was much more bothersome to us(please note that the hotel was sold out the nights we were there). The proximity of the hotel to Disney was not that bad. The Disney resort is a straight shot down Katella Rd, then a right turn onto Disneyland Way, approx. 5 minute drive. If you've ever stayed onsite at Disneyworld in Florida and are used to commuting to/from the parks from your hotel, then you won't find the distance unreasonable from Townplace to California Disneyland. California Disneyland tourists are accostumed to walking accessibility to the parks from their motel/hotel. Since walking to Disney from Townplace would be somewhat long, they feel the overall distance between the two points is far. Driving to Disney is a breeze and there may be a shuttle to the parks that I didn't notice until check-out time. So, it's worth asking about a possible Disney shuttle.
Overall opinion - Stay here if you need a budget property near Disney, need to cook, want extra living space and want eateries/bank footsteps from your hotel. Stay elsewhere if can afford to pay a little for higher standards of cleanliness and friendlier staff. The stained tub and stained/holey towels, cigar smell in a non-smoking room and rude check-in clerk/security guard are the reasons why I'd pay a little more myself to stay elsewhere.
I hope this was helpful.
