My family of four stayed at the Tropicana Inn for five nights in February of 2006. We normally prefer to stay at the Disneyland Hotel, however, this was a last minute, budget trip that was booked as part of a package. The Tropicana was one of only two hotels on Harbor, near Disneyland to choose from. We have previously stayed at the Howard Johnson's and the Park Inn. Both of those were okay places to stay but the HoJo was a letdown after reading all the great reviews and the Park Inn was a great location but the rooms felt a bit shabby and in need of refurb. The Tropicana had a wonderful location and really nice rooms. It took us on average five minutes to walk to the turnstiles of Disneyland. The rooms have clearly been redone in the recent past and are not a bad size. We needed a rollaway and there was just enough room to fit one in, we didn't need to move anything around to accomadate it at night. The front desk staff was wonderful, very helpful and courteous. They called us a cab one night so we could go to the Disneyland Hotel to eat at Goofy's, (we could have walked but we were tired) and when a taxi didn't appear within five minutes they called again without our even having to ask. The pool area is small, but has lots of nice lounge chairs, a few tables and plenty of towels. It was also very clean. In fact the whole property was very well maintained. I was constantly noticing maintainence and housekeeping staff working around the outside, cleaning windows, sweeping, cleaning the pool, hosing down the walkways and trimming the bushes.
The breakfast is not bad in my opinion because its free! I had read several reviews that made me think it would be pretty awful and it was bare bones, but the danishes and muffins were fresh and they also had apples and oranges which were great to stick in our backpacks for a snack at Disneyland for later in the day. The milk you could purchase was for a 16 oz. plastic bottle, enough for my two kids to share each day. It is certainly not like the free hot breakfasts some hotels offer but it was adequate to get our day going.
The plastic sheets also were something I was worried about and prepared to remove if necessary. However, they were not an issue. I am not sure I would have even realized they were there if I hadn't read about them ahead of time. They do make a bit of noise when you get in and out of bed, but since the matress pad is cloth and covers all but the outer edges they didn't present a problem while we slept. I did notice where they zip on/off so it would be a piece of cake to take them off if you were bothered. The beds were very firm and comfortable and the pilllows were really nice and thick, not all worn down. We asked for extra blankets and they brought them within five minutes. Also, the blankets were nice woven cotton ones and really clean. I noticed as we walked by the laundry room the maids use, there were always bedspreads in the wash and huge bins full of clean blankets. That made me think maybe they wash their bedding more often than other places.
The laundry room is small, I used two of three washers and both dryers and they all worked well. The gift shop/convenience store was high priced I thought but had a nice supply of things.
In all, this was a great experience. I still love the Disneyland Hotel the best, but now that we have found an offsite property we really enjoy near Disneyland, I might not be so anxious to pay over $200 a night to stay there again! I rated this property as excellent because dollar for dollar, it cannot be beat and it was one of the cleanest places I have stayed.
