“Clean and convenient”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2009

Great location with its close proximity to Disneyland and other area attractions such as the convention centre and Honda Centre, where we caught a hockey game. Rooms have a small refrigerator which is a necessity if you want to forgo the exorbitant prices for lunch and snacks at Disney. We had breakfast in room and then were able to pack a picnic lunch.

The children's pool area is wonderful for those 8 and under. Though it seemed to close a little early for our tastes.

Our only complaint about this property is the Main Street gift shop. It looks very enticing from the outside with its postcards, souveniers and convenient snack food but the main clerk that seems to run the store is NASTY. She was snipping at our children the whole 10 minutes we were in there. "Don't touch that..." "Don't look at those t-shirts, they're not your size anyway..." If our kids warranted a talking down I could see it, but they were very well behaved at 7 and 9, simply browsing her wares. We mistakenly went in the second time and she was the same way with ours and other children that were in the store. And it wouldn't hurt to smile once in a while. Save the nastiness and make the trip one block south the the other mini market. Much cheaper prices and service with a smile.

As well, the in-room internet service is dodgy at best. We ended up buying a wireless network connection good for all over California for $15.

We stayed at the HoJo Anaheim from January 27-Feb 3, 2009. The stay was fabulous. The rooms were clean, the water park excellent, the amenities just what one would need.

It is about 1km walking distance from the gate to the park, so be prepared for that.

We used the arcade (fun), visited the convenience store almost daily (prices what you would expect), used the laundry facilities (excellent), and we had such great weather we were able to take in the water park every day (superb).

I would without a doubt recommend this hotel to families looking for good value.

We also used a site called hotel-board.com to book the room. It was by far the best rate on the net. We ended up paying $70US/night, much less than everyone we surveyed there. While we at had a litle trepidation about using such an unknown site, and pre-paying, HoJo accepted our voucher from hotel-board without hesitation. And, at $70 US per night, it was a superb deal.

This is our 4th time staying at Howard Johnson Anaheim. Each time we have chosen to make this our home base when visiting Disneyland. ALthough the hotel is older and they have wisely chosen to advertise themselves as "retro family fun" the "retro" part of the hotel rooms might not sit well with a lot of travelers. You just need to know before you book this hotel that you are not getting a brand new hotel room - far from it. You get great customer service, and a clean and quiet room. The rooms are old and the bathrooms are starting to show wear and tear. BUT if you want a place that is safe and a short distance walk from D-land, then this is the place for you. There is a great pool to swim in, a pirate ship water playground (my kids are 7 and 10 and thought it was too babyish for them, but enjoyed sitting in the hottub near by). The hot tub was crowded every night of our stay with kids so if you are looking for a quite, romantic dip in the hottub, this is not the place for you.

Free parking if you have a rental car - safe and secure.

The front desk staff was very helpful, polite, professional and efficient.

Check out Mimis restaurant across the street for a delicious breakfast very reasonably priced!

We have just come back from our first trip to Disneyland with a 9 year old and a 13 year old. It was an adventure for all of us. After the 12 hour direct flight we were transferred to our hotel by Supershuttle - this is a very good service.
We dumped our luggage and headed right across the road to the entrance gate to Dland. It was a great time of year to go as there werent any lines and we really didnt need the fast pass lines that we were informed about.
We stuck it out all day and were ready to come back to our hotel at 6pm that night. The room was very comfortable. We took a small air mattress for our 9 year old to sleep on and there was plenty of room to set it up.
We were in Tower 1, the gift store is in this building, the games room is here and the laundry facilities were there to. You can change $1 bills at the change machine in the games room for the washing machines and driers. The free internet Macs in the foyer were very helpful to have available.
We were really only there to sleep and the room faced DLand Matterhorn ride where you could watch the nightly fireworks from our balcony. We were at the park to watch the fireworks so we didnt get to do this.
Right across the road, Minnis Diner became our home away from home for meals - eat in or take out (as the Americans say). Good value and very good service.

  • Liked — closeness to Dland and away from main freeway noise
  • Disliked — One encounter with Josh who was not very helpful BUT this is a minor issue compared to everything else

This was a quick trip to Disneyland and we didnt want to spend the money to stay at the disneyland hotel this time.

Staff was friendly but you had to come to desk to get items like batteries for remote. Check in was fast and staff helpful with directions.

Property was kept up well and room was small but clean. Walk to disneyland was not too far. Actually we stayed at the disneyland Hotel the previous year and monorail wait was so long that we walked to enterance. I think the walk from Howard Johnson was less than it was from the resort hotel!!

Wish the pool hours were later because the pool looked great and inviting but we got back too late to use it. Pool are was clean and very nice. Plants around the grounds made the place look very fresh and tropical.

Overall this was a great money saving alternative to staying on the disney property. Would definately stay here again.

  • Liked — close proximity to park. Price was right, value good
  • Disliked — desk staff didnt bring missing items to you, pool closed too early

While not as close of a walk to Disneyland as the hotel leads you to believe, this was a comfortable, family-friendly place. Our young kids loved the children's pool area and the room was spacious enough that we had room for the crib and never had to fold up our stroller! We were in building 1 on floor 5 and had a great view of the Disney fireworks. This isn't a top-flight hotel, but the room is nicely appointed for the very reasonable rates. No continental breakfast, but sometimes its easier with little ones to roll out of bed and pour bowls of cereal. We don't go to Disneyland often, but would definitely consider staying there again.

  • Liked — spacious room and proximity to Disneyland
  • Disliked — Room wasn't thoroughly cleaned (not vacuumed each day)

We have been going to Disneyland for years and always chose hotels closer to the entrance. But we wanted to try this hotel after reading reviews on the web....We stayed for two nights 1/31-2/2 in building 1 on the 2nd floor. Our room faced Disneyland and overlooked the hotel lobby. We enjoyed every aspect of our stay there. We arrived at 1pm on sat the jan 31st but our room wasn't ready until 3 pm, so our 3 kids spent 2 hrs at Castaway Cove, which they loved! Even while we were at disneyland they were begging us to go back in the middle of the day to play there, Which neeeeeeeeeeeeeever happens. Usually they dread going back to the room at any time of the day! Walking back and forth wasn't as bad as I expected, it was about 15 minutes to the disney gates. The room was very nice as well. It was very clean and smelled fresh, it didn't have the "hotel smell" The beds were very comfy and had lots of pillows. I also loved that room had double sinks! The only con I could find is that we chose a room with no microwave to save some money. And should have chose the upgraded room with the microwave. We wasted a lot of food since we had no way to heat leftovers. Other than that it was a very quiet where we were at and our room had a great view of the fireworks on sat night. We loved every aspect of our 1st stay and will be booking future stays, Thanks again Howard Johson!!

  • Liked — Location, great value, clean, free parking, late checkout
  • Disliked — you have to pay extra for a microwave
