“Great Family Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

This is the third time my family has stayed at this hotel and we'll keep going back. A great value located directly across from the fireworks at Disneyland. The high speed internet though is really bad.

I stayed at this hotel with six Australian teenagers. They were in LA for a three-day stopover including two days at Disneyland. The Howard Johnson is a good choice for families. It is a large, sprawling hotel with walkways, gardens and blocks of hotel rooms. We were situated furtherest from the hotel reception/entrance which could be challenging to anyone with walking difficulties.
Good points - spacious rooms (two double beds and a foldaway will fit in one standard room), microwave and mini-fridge in rooms, coin-operated laundry, heated outdoor swimming pool, spacious moden bathrooms, 10-15 min walk to the Disneyland entrance gates, has a small shop which sells microwavable meals, souvenirs, some food items such as milk (prices are quite high). The hotel is well-maintained. A shuttle bus picks up visitors for Disneyland. We did not use the service but believe it is a free service offered by Disneyland to surrounding hotels. Hotel front office staff were very obliging and good-humoured. It appears to be popular with Australian families. There are cafes such as McDonalds, Tony Romas, etc along this street so finding somewhere to eat is not a problem. We took a cab ride to the nearest Walmart (AUS$15 one way) and purchased food from their food section.
Bad points - walking distance to hotel room can be inconvenient. If you forget something you cannot go back quickly to your room. This is not one large enclosed hotel building but a series of buildings interlinked with pathways and gardens. If it is raining outside, you are walking in the rain to reach hotel receptioin. There is a 6 or 8 lane freeway on the boundary of this hotel. We did not hear the noise in our rooms but it is noticeable outside the hotel buildings. Also, a 15 min walk to Disneyland sounds short but our group made the trip four times in two days.

Room Tip: Request a room near hotel reception if you don't want a long walk to your room every day.

As a family of two adults and two teenagers, we stayed in this Hojo in July 2012. The location is superb, within 10 minutes walk to Disneyland and California Adventure Park. There is a McDonalds and Mimi's cafe just a short walk away.
We stayed in the back building (number two) on the fourth floor. Our room was very quiet, there was no traffic noise etc at all - the only thing you heard at night was the fireworks from the theme parks nearby (this was no issue for us, as apart from the night we arrived, we were still at the theme parks at this time of night anyway).
This hotel really is very good value for money - when checking on the internet, we couldn't find one within the same price range that was anywhere near as good.
The room was very clean with modern amenities. The only issue we had in the bedroom, was a rollaway bed (we had a double bed, a single bed and a rollaway bed). The rollaway was unfortunately much shorter than a standard bed and when we enquired, we were told they don't have any larger/standard size rollaways. This meant that our shortest teenager was not particularly comfortable, as although she is rather short, her feet still hung out the end of the bed.
We would definitely stay here again, but next time we would upgrade to a room not needing a rollaway (but if your children are younger (shorter) than ours, a triple room with rollaway is however a great way to keep the cost down).
There is a laundry room downstairs in this block which is a real bonus.
The only facility this hotel is missing is a restaurant/breakfast service. We found on the mornings we wanted to get up and going smartly, we struggled with breakfast. There is a small shop on the premises where you can buy milk, pottles of cereal etc, but your options are limited. And Mimis meant you had to have time to sit down for a meal (not really an option when you're wanting to beat the theme park queues early). So the only real option was to grab McDonalds on the way to Disneyland (which if you have a three day + pass, can get a bit tiresome). One day we thought we would get into the park and then get breakfast, only to find that many of the food sites there didn't open until 11am.
The reception staff were really friendly and helpful. They helped us store our bags in their very secure luggage room. They were also able to organise shopping excursions for us, and when I looked in to the price of down town LA bus tours and limo tours, I found a limo place prepared to take us around for the day for a good price (when there are four or more of you in your party, limo and bus tour costs become very similar, making limos an attractive option). When I checked with the reception staff via email before we left home to ask if they had heard of the limo company, they were able to instead get me a booking with the limo company they recommend (Tim's Limos) at the same cost. It was great booking with a reputable company, and our teenagers loved the surprise day in a limo!
Thanks to all at the Howard Johnson who helped make our stay so much fun!

Room Tip: Rooms in building number two at the back of the property are very quiet, well worth the slightly lon...

Our recent stay was great at the Howard Johnson, particularly as we had two adjoining rooms (2 adults and 2 big kids). It allowed for privacy while still being together at an affordable price. The rooms were spotlessly maintained and the beds and bedlinen fantastic. I always rate a hotel based on the comfort of their beds and the quality of their linens; these were top notch. Also, guest laundry was a bonus and we used it twice. Having the rooms facing the park allowed us to enjoy the fireworks from the comfort of our balcony. Would stay in the same place again no question!

We actually stayed here for New Year's 2011 (bit slow writing a review!) and found the hotel good value with very good amenities. Check-in was initially a bit confusing - like some others we couldn't work out exactly where to go! But staff were very friendly and helpful and the location is excellent - an easy walk to the Disneyworld parks and the nearby eating places are great (as, to be honest, were all of the places we ate on our USA trip).
For our first experience of an American hotel we were very satisfied.
