The proximity to the DL front gate was not represented well. Yes, the hotel is "across from the DL gate", but they must mean the perimeter gate, NOT the entrance. The employees claim a "short 8 minute walk", which is probably true if you are a young adult in good shape. But, if you have kids in tow, the "short 8 minute walk" is much longer and much, much harder. Also, the rooms with a DL view really just had an awful view of an ugly rooftop.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

We arrived at the "HoJo" on Christmas day and stayed 3 nights. It looks like it was built in the 60's but seems to have undergone a recent remodel. The grounds were well maintained with lots of flowers and attractive landscaping. We stayed in building 4 which has two stories (but no elevator, by the way). The hallways smelled like brand new carpet and the rooms were clean and comfortable. Noise was minimal, and most (if not all) rooms have balconies. Although the hotel is old, it seemed charmingly retro and its age really wasn't much of a detractor.

The second floor rooms have vaulted ceilings with clearstory windows (which look nice, but they do let in a lot of light in the morning so it may interfere with your late morning slumber). We did find a couple of crickets in our room (and we overheard our neighbor saying that they found one too), but they didn't bother us (maybe Jiminy Cricket jumped the fence from Disneyland?). We appreciated the roll-away bed in the room but until we were putting it away, we didn't notice the easy-to-miss tag on it that says there is a $15 per day charge for its use. I don't know if we actually got charged for it, but that seems a bit expensive for a roll away. And don't count on the free Wi-Fi, it was very slow. We ended up using our own mobile hot spot for the kids to connect with their iPods.

The location is great! It only took about 8 minutes to walk to the entrance of Disneyland which, in my experience, isn't any farther away than Disney's Paradise Pier or the Disneyland Hotel (which cost about double what the HoJo costs). There is a Mimi's Cafe right across the street, and an IHOP and Denny's nearby (although cheaper than the restaurants in the park, their prices still seemed higher than usual). Don't count on saving money by walking to a grocery store as the nearby quickie marts are very expensive ($4 for a quart of milk!).

Although it was a bit too chilly for us to enjoy it, the pool looked very fun for kids. It has a mini water park with a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps a HUGE portion of water every few minutes. Younger kids would have a lot of fun during warmer months.

Overall, we were pretty pleased with the HoJo and would likely stay there again. There are hotels that are slightly closer to the park, but the price was right.

Room Tip: Second story rooms have nice, spacious vaulted ceilings
