“Family Trip to Disneyland”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2013

Amazing experience. Allowed to check-in early, great rooms, great service!

We were given parking passes for 2 days while we spent our time at Disneyland and allowed to check-in 5 hours early. Room was very clean and very nice.

Desert Palms is a great and convenient place to stay for a a Disneyland Resort vacation. The prices are quite reasonable for being so close to the park. Hot breakfast, comfortable rooms and friendly staff. Parking is free and well secured. The walk to the park is only one stop light away, basically 2 blocks and the same side as the park. Great options for restaurants are a reasonable walk away.

Room Tip: We were to have a king, queen pull out and bunk bed but when we checked in the room was being repair...

Read a lot of reviews online while planning my trip to southern California. This hotel offers FREE parking and FREE breakfast. The location is within walking distance to California Adventure and DIsneyland. Even after a full day in the park the hotel was close enough that no one complained. The free breakfast was delicious.... great waffle bar and items changed each and every day. I was impressed by the care that was placed into the food. THe pool is small but was a good size... we enjoyed the hot tub. I would recommend this hotel to families looking for a place close to disney to stay and to people attending conferences. Overall GREAT experience.

Room Tip: I was on the third floor... it was great... views of the street which was fine with me

Green Features: I thought the hotel was environmentally concious... sheets and towels were all used to the best of our ability. seemed to be efficient and well monitored

We checked in Oct 23rd for a 4 night stay with 3 rooms taking our children and grand-children to Disneyland. When we arrived the clerk offered us an upgrade to a suite, not just for one room but for all 3 rooms. This worked out so great since the first night we ordered pizza from Papa Johns and had a table with 4 chairs, couch, chair, and coffee table to all be together. Papa John's did not bring plates or napkins but the restaurant at Desert Palms offered paper plates and napkins. The room was clean and spacious. The refrigerator is larger than most hotel rooms and there were 2 flat screen TV's. We were so surprised when we heard a popping noise at 9pm and realized they were fireworks from Disney that we could easily see out our window on the 4th floor.
Desert Palms had a wonderful hot breakfast with eggs, waffles, and everything else you could want. The service at cleaning the tables and keeping the food filled was very impressive. Desert Palms is located just behind Radiator Springs Racers at California Adventure Park. It is an easy walk to Disneyland and you do not have to cross any busy streets. Next door is a 7-11 which was great for getting drinks for the pizza and milk for baby bottles.
The staff was so kind and thoughtful and as we checked out they even took our picture with Mickey Mouse. There is a photo stand where you can send the picture on facebook with a timer so that everyone can get in the picture, which is now on my facebook profile page. Loved our stay, we were all very impressed with all the extra details the hotel offered such as strawberry and lemon water when you walked into the lobby.
Thank you Desert Palms for making our vacation such a great experience. We will be back.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

Our family party of four adults and one child, grandson of seven years of age, planned a four day trip to Disneyland, October 7th to 11, 2013. Based of the review of others on Tripadviser, we chose to stay at the Desert Palms Hotel & Suites rather than staying at the Anaheim HOJO where we had stayed on a couple of previous occasions and which we found to be excellent! On retrospect we should have stayed at the HOJO! We booked a Kalahari Suite, consisting of two queen bedded bedrooms connected by a hallway with two bathrooms. This sounded like an ideal type of accommodation fo our party of five. At time of reservations made by phone, a fourth floor suite was requested based on the tips on the Tripadvisor reviews. The person taking the reservation indicated that this would be noted. At time of registration, it was indicated that the only Kalahari Suite that was available was on the second floor. First come, first served we were told! We asked about a transfer to a 4th floor suite if one became avaialble the next day. The desk clerk indicated that it appeared that there would be one availble next day, however the process of moving from our suite to one on the fourth floor would have entailed that one of us would have to have stayed the next morning till the fourth floor suite was cleaned and there was no guarantee of the time this would occur. As we were here to visit Disneyland and not hanging around waiting for the suite to be cleaned, we weren't to happy about this. It was pointed out to us that we could store our luggage, etc. in their designated luggage storage area. But this area was not secured and it was strickly self-catering without any responsibility on the hotel's part in case of any theft. We were concered for our luggage under these circumstances, There was no bell hop service available. We chose not to move! Perhaps it was a mistake!
The reason for the 4th floor Tripadvisor tip soon became evidient when we entered our second floor unit. The Desert Palm, like many of the accommodations around Disneyland, have undergone renovations and expansions over the past number of years. It so happens that the Desert Palms acutually has two distinct components to it; the South 5 floor tower which is somewhat newer and more modern and the older section which contained our suite. The newer tower is not directly connected to the older unit. There is a vast difference in the quality of the rooms in each of the sections. In the suite that we were in on the second floor of the old section had very thin walls. Sound carried from the adjacent rooms and from the ceiling. You could also distictly hear conversations taking place in the adjacent hotel surface parking lot. As well, the bedrooms doors being slammed by guests coming and going, especially at 2AM could be heard through the night, keeping us awake. The bedrooms were small. I would estimate the the suite with the two bedrooms was about 400 sq. feet and very narrow. As the room is entered, the bed and TV stand intrude into the narrow passage to the second bedroom making navigation around the room and from one room to another difficult. (I wonder what the fire-marshall would say about that situation.) I have gone to some length to describe the Kalahari Suites because IMHO, it would be better to actually book two separate rooms rather that the Kalahari Suite. The cost may be more but it would give the occupants better accommodation and space.
The TV's were flat screen but the reception was very poor and the channel selections were limited. The Wi-Fi service was poor and as more guests used it the service slowed down even more. The suite was furnished with a good sized fridge and small micro but it was old and needed a good cleaning. The suite had a musty smell. The suite's decorations, furniture and general tone had a "tired look".The general cleanliness of the room was poor. The rug was dirty as attested to by the black soles of our white athletic socks; stains were evidient on the rug and comforter; the bathroom caulking needs to be replaced; there was mold on the bathroom tiles and floor; the water control faucet was tricky to use; a couple tiles were loose; the blinds had broken slats; the key-operated safe in the closet need to be upgraded. We were not comforatble using the old safes, yet we were charged $1.00 per night. There is also a $9.00 per night "Resort" fee. I'm not certain what the services the fee gave guests.
Each day the cleaning staff left the thermostat at 85. Upon returning to the suite at the end of the day, it took some time for the air conditioner to bring it down to 74. People don't know how termostats work. Leave it set at 74. The room will not get cooler than that. It also appeared that the air conditioner was turned off during the night?
Free hot/cold buffet breakfast was offered each morning which included make your own toast and waffles; cold cereals; fresh fruit; gravy and biscuits; juice, coffee, tea and milk. No take out cups for coffee. No sausages or bacon was offered the two mornings we were there. At the peaks breakfast times it was a bit of a frenzied area. Ice water and lemonade was avaialble in the lobby which was a nice touch! To get to the breakfast we had to take one elevator from our second floor suite, down to the lobby level and then we took another elevator to the 5th floor in the newer tower.
A small excercise room was avaialble as was a small swimming pool and hot tub. A small on-site gift store sold snacks, souvenirs, t-shirts, hats, etc. A small on-site bar/bistro was avaialble, The Sand Box, which can be accessed from the Hotel Lobby. Menu offers wings, pizza, pastas, sandwiches and burgers. Good selection of soft and hard drinks are offered. It's a good place to grab a quick lunch, supper or late snack. There were numerous other restaurants in the area. 7-11 and ABC convenience stores are nearby but there were panhandlers in the daytime and in the evenings there were rough looking characters loitering around the stores and the parking lots. Safety was a concern. As well the shops of Anaheim Garden Walk, which was within easy walking distant from the Hotel, offers numerous shopping, dining, entertainment and nightlife opportunities.
One of the advertised attractions was the fact that the Hotel is only 10 minutes from Disneyland. This is true. As well an Anaheim Resort Transit (ART) bus stops in front of the hotel and leaves for the Disneyland Transistion hub every 20 minutes. Daily and multiple day passes, along with tickets to other attractions including Dislneyland can be purchased at the front desk of the hotel which is staffed 24hrs. We often took ART back from the park after a long day to give our feet a rest.
I'm not certain why this Hotel gets the high rating it does, but it certainly has a good location and it's certainly popular with families. The Lobby was constantly filled with families.
All in all, if you are considering booking the Desert Palm Hotel & Suites, be forwarned that any similarity to what is shown in the "professionally staged advertising photos" and reality leaves a lot to be desired!

Room Tip: Insist on rooms in the 5 floor tower. Avoid rooms facing Katella Avenue.

I recently had one of our student groups stay there (116 people in all) and have never experienced such good customer service. Everything was taken care of in a timely manner, had great assistance with the luggage and all of the rooms were ready on time. The students also appreciated the close proximity to the park. Easy walking distance. This is the first time our group has stayed there, but it will not be the last. The Group Sales Manager, Ms. Julie Gomez is definitely on top of her game. Recommend this hotel highly.
