“Excellent hotel for your money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

My family flew into LA on the red-eye from Hawaii and reached the hotel at about 9:30 am, way too early to check-in. Nevine at the front desk was nice enough to store our luggage while we went to eat breakfast on the 5th floor. She even took our cell phone number so she could call us if someone checked out early and someone did so we were in our room by 11:00 am. She also gave us a room with a view of the fireworks. We stayed at the Desert Palms on a recommendation of a friend and we could not have been happier. We stayed for 6 nights and all the employees at this hotel were very friendly, pleasant and helpful. We enjoyed the complimentary breakfast served every morning. It really helped us get off to an early start to Disneyland because we didn't have to go searching for something to eat. The walk to Disneyland was a brisk 5 minutes. Didn't have to catch the ART at all. We will definitely be staying here again next year!

Normally, I book all of our vacations, but, this year I got busy. My wife booked our Disneyland portion of the trip for the hoppers/hotels. After seeing the property in pictures and up close, I had my doubts. The service was adequate and we were placed on the first floor...overlooking the back parking lot. Ugh!

But, wait! Don't judge a book by its cover.

The first floor was a blessing in disguise. No waiting for elevators, and easy access to the FREE underground parking garage, pool/jacuzzi, front desk, bar/grille, front door.

The walk to Disneyland is a brisk 10 minutes or 15 minutes with little kids. We bought the ART all-day passes for $4/adult and $1/children for the evening. Don't be mistakened. The buses are supposed to run every 20 minutes. Several times, we were left waiting up to 40 minutes.

KEY TIP: Walk across the street from 7-11 and wait at those benches. All the numbered buses that stop there, will drop you off close to the Disneyland gates (either inside the gates or across the street). KEY TIP 2: For your return, use the #9, which drops you off at the 7-11 next to the hotel. It's a long walk at 11pm with two kids, without strollers.

The room was standard and did have a microwave/refrigerator. The beds were so/so, but, the room was quiet. The bath towels were small, so, you may need more than what is provided.

I tried the food from the Sand Box Bar/Grille. The portions were big and pretty tasty and well priced. I wasn't looking for gourmet food, just something to hold me over. I tried the spaghetti and meatballs/BBQ wings/California Cheeseburger/carrot cake/chocolate cake. Nothing spectacular and nothing bad.

We ate the hot breakfast every morning. They had scrambled eggs/sausage patties (every day)/wedge potatoes/waffles/pastries/oatmeal/cereal/juice/coffee. Pretty basic. As someone else said, if they added a few different cereals or changed up the meats once in awhile it would be nicer. Very edible and sufficient.

KEY TIP: The trip to Universal Studios can be taxing on a weekend. Brutal LA traffic. Go on a weekday.

KEY TIP 2: The Cars ride at California Adventure fills up quickly. The park opened at 8 AM. We got there at 9 AM and the FAST PASSES were being distributed for 11:00...PM! We decided to walk up and stand in line for the ride, only to find out it was shut down due to some malfunction. Waited for about 30 minutes to see if it would start up again, but, nothing. Came back later in the day and waited 1:20 minutes to get on the ride. It was high 80's, low 90's that day. Bring plenty of liquids and comfortable shoes. We heard some other had to wait 2 hours! I promised the kids...but, it was worth it.

Have a great time!

Stayed for 7 nights. Very helpful front desk, clean tidy rooms - not luxurious but perfect for our needs. A short walk to Disney was so convenient. Free parking available. Breakfast in the morning was good. Recommend this hotel.

Like most hotels within walking distance of Disneyland, this is not an especially modern property. Though recently renovated, its age shows right away. However, over a six night stay, the less obvious but equally important features shine through, the most significant of which is the outstanding customer service.

The property is generally clean and well-maintained. There is a rather basic breakfast available which is plain but consistent. Some of the units and interiors could use upgrading. The hotel conveniently located, about a 10 minute walk from the park entrance, which for Disneyland is as close as you can get without going to a Disney resort hotel or being directly across the street. As noted by other reviewers, there is a bus, the "Anaheim Resort Transit" or "ART", which can shuttle you to and from the resort. Unfortunately, the ART is not especially reliable, and the bus arrival times are spotty. Heading out, rather than waiting for the one route that stops in front of the 7-11 next to the hotel, it is better to cross the street to the East and catch one of the ten routes that services that stop. Returning from the park on the ART can be a pain, as again waiting for that single route can be frustrating at the end of a long day.

The most impressive aspect of this hotel is its staff. They were far and away the friendliest and most helpful throughout the booking process of any of the four hotels we had booked around Disneyland for this trip. We were given all of the correct information over the phone and were advised of the lowest rate for our room right away. We made several changes to the reservation and each time we received excellent customer service. The rate was good compared to comparable hotels in the area. Throughout the stay, the staff were very helpful and attentive to our concerns.

The aspect of this hotel most in need of improvement is its facilities and rooms. Upon our arrival the first night, we were booked into a "Tanami Suite", in anticipation of our two-year old daughter sleeping in a separate room. The "suite" was, unfortunately, little more than a moderately large room with a small entryway, barely large enough to contain a pull-out sofa and a dry bar, separated by a single door. The rather dated air conditioner and even more ancient fan were functional but noisy, rendering sleep nearly impossible while they were on. The room was also, unfortunately, located on the second floor of what appeared to be an older back side of the property, directly above the interior swimming pool. The swimming pool, lamentably, is located within an interior courtyard, which creates quite a bit of noise from the echoes of the children swimming and shouting there. Anyone with a room on the first few floors that shares a wall with this pool courtyard is likely to find it surprisingly loud.

For us, this was a problem, as our young child sleeps early. After spending a fairly unpleasant first night, we contemplated moving hotels but first we wanted to speak with the manager to see what could be done.

The response was extraordinary. The manager listened to our concerns and understood our needs. We were immediately offered an alternate room at the same rate, in the newer part of the hotel. The new room, a "Mini Suite", was a true suite with a full kitchen, living room, spacious bedroom, and separate bath. We could not have been more satisfied with the new room. The staff even moved all of our belongings for us from the old room to the new room, the next day while we were in Disneyland, so we wouldn't miss any time in the park.

The remainder of the stay was very pleasant. The "Mini Suite" was very comfortable and recently renovated. The staff were consistently polite and helpful. Even after our stay, when we called back to inquire about a lost item, they were attentive and eager to assist, making the appropriate inquiries and returning our call promptly. All in all, the customer service was among the best in our experience, rivaling that of a four or five star property.

Altogether, the hotel is pretty good if you get a newer room, and the staff is excellent. The location is as convenient as you get for Disneyland, but don't count on the ART to be timely. It is a good property for families on vacation, but not especially suited to business travelers or couples on honeymoon.

Room Tip: Ask for a room NOT on the second floor, and preferably not near the pool.

We stayed 3 nights here and were very happy with our stay. The front desk was always helpful and friendly. The room (we had a kids suite) was on the small side for what it was, but perfectly adequate and extremely clean. Plus the bunk beds were a huge hit with my kids and the balcony, though too tiny for even a chair, faced the park and I think if we had been up in the room at the right time we would have had a great view of the fireworks. I am a light sleeper and easily bothered by noise, and I have to say I thought the noise level was excellent here. Unlike places we've stayed in the past, we did not hear noisy doors opening or people talking in the hallway. The air conditioning and bathroom fan were both nice and quiet.

One neat surprise was the pool. While totally drab and unexciting during the day (not a complaint - it is what we expected from the photos and was fine with us. We didn't use it because we were at the parks but even if we had, my kids would have been happy!) at night they turn on underwater color changing lights which actually made it magical! The kids thought it was amazing.

We discovered that walking would have been easier than the shuttle, when returning from the parks. It's really not too far (though difficult for tired feet) and when we missed one shuttle, we had to wait a full forty minutes to catch the last bus of the day. I'm not sure why as they are supposed to come every 20 minutes - but this one came and then sat there for another 15. This is not the fault of the hotel - just a tip - walk home!

Really our only criticism of the hotel was the breakfast selection. I can see that they tried to have a varied selection, yet none of it was very appealing to us. There were only 2 cereals (corn flakes and fruit loops) and we did not care for the eggs. The waffles - a great idea and easy to make yourself - were really dense and didn't taste so good. I think if they just added bagels and cream cheese, a few more cereal options or some granola, and bananas, it would be easier for people to find something they like. It was nice to be able to sit outside on the roof (or inside if you chose) and eat breakfast, though!

Room Tip: We asked for a room (kids suite) facing the fireworks. It was a nice location, upstairs and quiet. A...

We stopped at Desert Palms for three weeks in Aug Sept 2012. We had adjoining rooms which were comfortable and well maintained. Staff at the hotel were always very friendly and helpful. Coming from England they offered plenty of 'local' tips. Breakfast was good. Pool a little small. Overall we would not hesitate in stopping again and had a great holiday.

We spent 6 nights at the Desert Palms (this is the second time we have chosen to stay here).. The location is good - a 10 minute walk to the main gates of Disneyland - a shuttle is available if the walk is too much at the end of the day ($2 per person)... located next to a 7/11 which had plenty of supplies such as food/alcohol etc. Within walking distance is also plenty of dinner options (The Cheesecake Factory being our favourite!)
Onsite parking was a bonus - as we hired a car just to get around the area a bit further (shopping, universal studios, LA etc) as the shuttle service offered is quite expensive compared to car hire.
The pool was great for everyone to unwind - it was a heatwave when we were there!
The rooms were clean and comfortable. The bathroom exhaust was linked to the bathroom light was extremely noisy - not sure if that could be changed though.
The staff were courteous and efficient in all aspects - from front desk, room cleaners and the handyman.
The breakfast is an experience! The toast and orange juice are quite nice!
It was an affordable stay in a good location. The price matches what you would expect to receive.
