GREAT FANTASTIC HOTEL!
We are Gold status Starwood Members and couldn't’t get a room at the Sheraton Park Hotel so we had to “settle” for the Sheraton Anaheim Resort (Castle) hotel instead. What a blessing it was! (more on that later)
Believe it or not, this is NOT a cheesy castle themed hotel like the hotel stock photos suggests…except for the outside entrance area. Other than that, the hotel would be better described as an English Tudor hotel with fountains, koi ponds and a rose garden.
Outside, staff greeted us upon arrival at their booth set up for tours, questions and so forth. Upon entering, we were surprised to see such a LARGE, beautifully decorated lobby. One part of the lobby has 4 sofas, many wing-back chairs, bookcase; a separate part of the lobby has a step down cozy niche area with sofas by a fireplace. Off to the other side is a very nice bar with sports TV and then the restaurant is in the far back. A very large check in desk area had 3 employees to greet us.
Being Starwood members, we were supposedly upgraded to an “over-sized” room (#1167 ground floor). It had 2 Queen beds, desk, TV, mini fridge and so on, yet so large that it could have easily fit in 2 roll away beds and still had room left over. It was 500 sq. feet. It overlooked the pool and had a back exit door to the pool.
We decided to upgrade to a Turret Suite instead ($100 extra per night) being disappointed that our Gold Member Status didn't give us one to begin with. This had 2 separate rooms. One room had a King size bed, desk, mini fridge, sitting area and TV with wrap around (turret) windows. The front room had a sofa bed, wing back chair, bookcase with TV, dresser and dining table for 4. The bathroom was in two parts. One part dressing area and the second part shower and toilet. Yes, a real hair dryer and stocked with Shine products!
We did have a tiny problem with hairs being in our King bed upon check in. But the staff was very quick to correct the problem. They quickly sent a Bell Boy to our room with new keys for another Suite and he took all our baggage to the new room. Even though the issue was dealt with quickly, we were a bit disappointed that we were not offered a discount of our $100extra per night because it was pretty nasty…but that was ok and we got over it quick. We did have a roll away bed brought to the room ($10 extra) and were pleasantly surprised that it was a real twin bed on wheels. Very Nice!
In the morning, we ate breakfast in the hotel restaurant. Some family memebers tried the Buffet which offered quite a large variety of food. It included pancakes, French toast, fruit, cereals, meats , eggs and much, more. It was very good. I ordered Eggs Benedict off the menu instead. The Eggs Benedict was cooked perfectly except I wish the sauce had a bit more zing to it as it was very bland. Service was perfect, quick and very friendly. Honestly though, it was a bit pricey. Buffet and Eggs Benedict were $12.95 and $13.95 each. If they would just drop the price by $5 each we would have eaten breakfast there every morning..and maybe the place would have been packed too, although business was brisk. Which reminds me, on the Starwood website, it stated that as Gold Status, a complimentary buffet breakfast for 4 was included each morning. When we asked the front desk about it upon finishing breakfast, we were told that we had to verbally mention that at check in to get it so we were unable to qualify for it. Bummer for us and a bit irritating. Maybe if we had mentioned the hairs in our bed they might have reconsidered. But we just went with the flow and felt that was a pretty lame excuse. So if you go here..ask for any and all complimentary items at check in, because otherwise you lose out.
There is also a nice Deli and mini mart on the premises. Sandwiches and salads were about $9 and other items sold were very reasonably priced..bag of chips or candy bar$1.00 etc.. It is open till midnight and it was a nice touch to the hotel, especially for those of us coming in late from Disneyland. Across from the Deli is an Arcade. Again, they didn’t overcharge the kids for usage. A quarter per game with some being .50 cents. There is a small work out room overlooking a nice pool. Concierge booked our reservations at the New Orleans restaurant at Dland. Blue Bayou was booked up and we were told that you should do it a least 2 or 3 days in advance. Parking is $10 but like one previous poster said, Some days you could enter for free and not pay. There is a Starbucks and Taco Bell at the corner near Harbor but it is a walk.
The complimentary shuttle runs every 30 minutes from the front of the hotel to the entrance of Disneyland. This was awesome and so much easier than driving, parking and then taking a tram to the entrance . We loved this perk!
Fireworks are shot off near the back of Dland. There is perfect unobstructed viewing from the entrance of this hotel as it is situated behind Disneyland. You could even see the lower fireworks being shot toward the front of the castle inside Dland too. This was a huge hit with guests staying at the hotel as we all gathered outside on the benches for a fantastic view without the crowds.
Since we loved this hotel so much, we decided to drive on over to the other Sheraton - Park Hotel (that was booked up) to see what we were missing out on. No host or booth outside to great us, one average check-in area with tile floors and a plain looking bar to the right near the front which was very loud as the sound bounced off the tile floors. The hotel offered to show us a room. They only have 6 suites which were all taken (size was smaller than suite at the other hotel) and all the other rooms were exactly alike. The decor and furniture was the same as ours except a change in colors. The room size was about 370 sq. ft compared to the 500 sq. ft. of our original over-sized room. Plus, we had to exit the building to get to the tower area as it is not all accessible from the main hotel. We saw no shuttle service running either. It did have a restaurant connected to the hotel somewhere and gift shop to the side. The one nice thing about this hotel is that it is conveniently located next door to other restaurants such as Morton's, Ruth Chris and Ihop. If you have no car, this might be of interest to you as our hotel does not.
Back at our hotel, we were again pleasantly greeted outside by hotel staff, reaffirming that this hotel is more full service. The Sheraton Anaheim Hotel could earn 5 stars but I am giving it 4. To earn that extra star, they would have had to give us some kind of recognition as being Gold Status Starwood members(it is not that easy to earn that status) ; An automatic suite upgrade or at least given us our complimentary breakfast. I wish the maid remembered to give us 4 bottles of water and 4 Starbucks coffee packets instead of 2 each day like we asked her the first day. I found it kind of humiliating to have to call down for a roll of toilet paper too. I also would like to see wi-fi free or at the very least have a computer available for free usage in the lobby like the Hampton Inns do. They do have a computer room but you have to rent the monitor etc. And maybe put new carpet in their hallways as they looked "tired" but they were constantly being cleaned while we were there.
Don't hesitate to book this place. You will not be disappointed. It is very clean, nice furniture, comfy beds, down pillows and comforters, Shine products, one free movie channel, has super friendly staff, lots of nice perks and easy to get to Disneyland. And best of all, it is not that expensive either. I will have all my out of town guests stay here from now on!
