“Get the potstickers.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

Decent food at a good price is hard to find. Unless, you happened to swing by 101 Noodle Express in Alhambra. Come hungry. Very generous portions. I ordered a 3 combo cold appetizer with potstickers. Those potstickers had all the right flavors. It came hot and not greasy. They were perfectly cooked with a nice caramel color on top. The appetizer consisted of beans, bean curd, and tendons. A meal in itself. Too bad that this restaurant is too small. About 40 seats with basically zero parking spaces available since they share spaces with other tenants. Otherwise, come in during off peak hours.

“Jonathan Gold, what were you thinking?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

The skinny:

Parking: strip mall, plenty of space
Decor: dirty dive
Service: NOT fine dining
Food: bland
Water: not filtered

This restaurant is number 82 on the list of top 100 in LA according to Jonathan Gold. I respect and admire him so I drove out to Alhambra to try the beef roll which he said was delicious and amazing. I called ahead and they barely understood "What time do you open?" After asking 3 times and talking with someone else, they agreed that 1030AM on Sunday is when they open. When I arrived, the sign said 11AM. Sigh.

Once open, we took our seats at a 4 top next to a wall that didn't look like it had been wiped down in several years. Thats ok I rationalized, Jonathan Gold ate here, he loves it!

We ordered:

Steamed Shrimp and Pork Dumplings: blech
Fried Chicken Dumplings: eh
Spicy hand torn Dan Dan Noodles: unedible
Scallion pancakes: bland
and Beef Roll: just ok

It was cheap, the portions are huge, and for $40 we could have feed another 2 people.
The dumpling skins were so think and tasteless that it really was not good. The fillings just didn't taste fresh or have much taste at all. One shouldn't have to dunk everything in soy sauce in order to make their meal palatable.

“Yes the beef rolls are amazing but there is so much more”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2013

Hidden in a shopping mall in Alhambra next to a bowling alley this amazing hole in the wall restaurant has some of the best Chinese food In the San Gabriel Valley. First off for the adventurous try the beef tendon cold appetizer spicy with a hint of five spice powder and cilantro.
For the newbies to this restaurant check out the cold case that's where the starters are at they are fresh and absolutely delicious. There is Edamame salad that's great, eight tofu and noodle that's wonderful and a different assortment give them all try.. My one negative is the shrimp and pumpkin and pork potsticker not enough pumpkin. Even though it is quite juicy and cooked to perfection.
The restaurant has no ambience at all it .Lots of small tables for a small place wait times will very hipsters and foodies have have definitely found this place this place has a large Chinese following looking for authentic food at amazing prices seven dollars per entree is the average price.

“Beef rolls are great!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2013

101 Noodle Express (Chinese:魯味居) located on the busy Valley Blvd has been listed as Top Ten by David Chan is the original. It has several chain shops now. Since, the restaurants with similar Northern- China flavor have been spreading throughout out Greater Los Angeles areas, the 101 is not unique anymore(the name 101 implied that it is the first).
We gave it 3 stars because of the food is good but not outstanding, wondering if Mr. Chan visited the 101 in the very early days or the restaurant does not keep it up with their reputation. The shop has 9 tables(each for 4), it's clean and with nice setting. Service is good( not as bad as others experienced). Parking is tight. Waiting is a common scene. The food: Beef rolls, first class( better than most in LA area restaurants); Si-Chuan Dan Dan Noodles, very good; Hot & Sour soup, ordinary; XiaoLongBao(i.e., Steamed Dumplings)-pork & crab meat, so-so(crab meat? can't tell); fried dumplings, OK; small dishes(“appetizers”), OK. Total cost for 4: $60 (in the menu, most of the orders are around $7), not bad. Actually, low-cost might be one of its selling points.

“Love the beef rolls!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

The beef roll is definitely the thing to order here. The cold combo platter we had was also really good, so was everything else, except the soup noodle (decent but I've had better elsewhere). I have since returned several times just get take out (beef roll and cold combo platter) and the food is consistently top notch.
